Condensed: Violence - A Universal Challenge

This is a summary of a chapter of a summary report. Without further ado.

Violence is something that can permeate everywhere. Many people suffer health problems, are injured or die because of violence.

The success of public health approaches to other environmental and behavior-related health problems are changing the assumptions of violence being seen as a fact of life and that it is to be exclusively considered as a "law and order" issue.

The consequences of violent behavior could not be ignored in the effort to improve public health and thus, tackling the root of violence is made top priority for the health community. Since then, a wide range of public health practitioners and researchers around the world have set themselves the task of understanding violence and finding ways to prevent it. Raising awareness of the fact that violence can be prevented in only the first step in shaping the response to it. However, there is often resistance at official as well as personal levels to open discussion on the topic as it means touching upon complex matters of morality, ideology and culture.

What's needed is to challenge the secrecy, taboos and feelings of inevitability that surround violent behavior and to encourage debate that will increase our understanding of this largely complex phenomena.
