Did Equestria Girls need a love interest?

This really is a pet peeve for me but why did they need a love interest in equestria girls? i know i'm over thinking it but still. I don't really get how twilight can fall in love with flash sentry at all. They barely got to know each other and twilight being a pony in her mind would probably not find a human flash attractive at all. This is just a bother for me and in all just my opinion.

Hasbro wanted one even though DHX didn't because the purpose of Equestria Girls being commissioned was to compete with Mattels Monster High and other teenage girl marketed dolls. Flash Sentry was born a bastard but I am honestly neutral on him, I don't hate him and don't mind romance being used so long as it is done well but still won't deny that he seemed to well just be "there". Twilight being attracted to a human boy is believable though so I don't agree with your reasoning on that, there are a lot of humans attracted to ponies after all (why else do you think there is so much clop?) so it only stands to reason that a pony can feel the same way about a human.

Because some 58 year old Hasbro executive thought you still needed the dream boat perfect guy in girls marketed shows in order to obtain a profit. Other than filling a stereotype that some out of touch old man thought was still needed in children's media, he really didn't have a purpose in the first EqG movie. I hope that they can make him more of a person this time, rather than just a satire of 80s teen movies.

Dude is a blank-slate. Don't know if its on purpose or accidental. Though, if you don't like him, you could create a personality for him. Hell, my version is that he's an embassador to the Crystal Empire. The human version... do you really care about eh human version?

Better question: Why not? Equestria Girls is little more than a dime-a-dozen teen high school movie. There are hundreds of those movies out there and EqG doesn't stand out from them at all in spite of the brand name. Her reason for liking him makes as much sense as any bullshit teen romance in any of those movies. He's cute and he was nice to her for ten seconds. OBVIOUS TRUE LOVE AMIRITE!?

Because... Cliché! *Ding!*  You have to have a 'Brad' in every High school movie, right? Wrong! *Ding!*  Also, "Main character has a crush on a boy she just met in high school!" Cliché. *Ding!*

Am I the only one who really doesn't mind any of the mane 6 having a love interest? I mean, honestly. They are... Well I won't say "human" but they have emotions similar to humans. They feel happiness, anger, sadness, fear, anxiety, courage... That includes, on occasion, love. So why is it SUCH a big deal that, at some point, one of them DOES fall in love? Doesn't the brony community already pretend they have love interests all the time? Shippings, fanfics, even some marriages. I am not judging anyone who does this kind of stuff, but still. We give them love interests, why not give them love in the show, too?

The only real flaw I can agree with is that the setting of this whole thing is kind of... Well stupid. It was just a cheesy cliche strategy, have a love interest in high school. But still, this is high school. People fall in love & fall out of it all the time. So, cheesy & cliche as it is, it is reality.

So, yeah, I guess my point is I think the whole hate over Flash is a bit... Excessive. Without basis? No. Excessive? Yes. When your main cast is a group of girls, there is going to be at least some romance involved, almost always in the feminine sense, which is just basically the girl sees cute guy, and acts like a moron in front of them. Just as when the main cast is a group of guys there is probably going to be romance in the more masculine way, which is the "nerdy" (I quote that heavily, cause everytime I see someone that is supposed to be an outcast they always look like what would be the popular guy -_-) guy falls in love with a girl completely out of his league. Yes, both of those are stereotypes, but I am focusing on the stereotypes in my little rant here :P Sorry for the rant, by the way. Just have been seeing things like this EVERYWHERE and I have yet to understand the whole deal over it -_-

Love interests are OKAY! But when it comes to love interests that are set up like they came out of a Cliché High school movie, in this case IT DID! then its a huge NO! (just read the whole thing, you mentioned it, but still!) Though it does happen in real life, it doesn't happen like that!

Like I said, yeah, I agree the setting is stupid. But overall, I see a lot of hate towards the mane 6 having a love interest... All I can ever think of is "So... You don't want them to experience the joy of loving & being loved? That... Seems kind of cruel...  :( "

Dude... I'm the male equivalent to Cadence. I support romance wherever it is! I don't mind a love interest to a 6! It just can't be set up like that! Oh yeah and I edited my previous post.

Fair enough, though I still feel that the hate for something that was pretty obvious is a bit... Overdone :P

Meh, there are a lot of overdone things. But i'm sorry to say that I don't like High school movies that are THIS cliché!

Agreed. Why couldn't Flash actually have i don't know..Character,beyond the 'nice guy that everyone thinks is cool' cliche'? I know why! Because he was just a toss in and not a well thought out character.

The only rational explanation behind Twilight's crush towards Flash is that he was the first human that she really interacted with, albeit a very brief exchange.  One could say that this held some sort of significance for Twilight, as he was the first helping hand she received upon entering the human world.

Beyond that though, I will agree that he is a rather underdeveloped  and somewhat cliche' character that was simply added for the minor love interest.  If they had taken the time to flesh him out a bit further, they could have had a more compelling reason for his existence.  However, I hold no issue with the any of the Mane 6 having some sort of romantic relationship in the series, so long as it is executed well.  There has to be some sort of nature progression in such relationships, to give the presence of some sort of chemistry between these character, to make such a thing more tangible and believable to the viewer.

That's it? He exist as a "love interest" because Monster High had one? No wonder McCarthy and the writing staff had trouble with him. They wanted to maintain Faust's vision for FiM. BUT HE COULDN'T HAVE BEEN JUST A FRIEND?!

Sorry...Sorry... I just happened to expect way too much from Flash because I happen to like him. Why? Well his name... And he's a royal guard. That's wasted potential! Dx

So she finds herself in a world full of new, weird looking creatures and she is attracted to one of them? I mean, what if Twilight walked through a portal and found herself surrounded by gelatinous blob beings instead of humans?

Despite Flash Sentry, I still enjoyed Equestria Girls.

They should have done a lot more with him in the show other than give him pointless cameos just to tease Bronies. Develop him as a character. TBH his EQG design was pretty munted.

Develop him as a character? You speak nonsense! Have you forgotten this show's target audience?

I'm kidding of course. I agree with you, but I don't t Hasbro will allow that...

I mean give him more of a role than just a piss taking cameo, I know Hasbro are just trying to annoy us with his punchable face. I prefer his Pony design other than his human design, maybe give him a personality. And Twilight just seems to ignore his appearance in season 4 like nothing happened.
