Self sacrifice?

If you were given an option for a guaranteed world-peace, end to plagues, poverty, war and famine, a true utopia - at the cost of your life.. would you take it? As a situation would have it, you have it on absolute certain to happen immediately - a perfect world - only you cease being a part of it. What would you do?

If I knew whoever was offering the deal wasn't bullshitting me, I'd probably do it. I'd go out like a badass too, fading into gold dust and all that.

Hmm.... That's a tough one. My immediate impulse is to say "Hecks yeah I would!" But on the other hand, what I as a Christian value more than all those things is that folks believe in God. 'Cause y'know, what good would a "perfect world" be if all the people ended up in eternal punishment? (Not to make this into a religious debate; that's just a factor that I take into consideration.) And without difficulties and trials to overcome, what motivation would people have to rely on God as (in my worldview) He intended?

Of course, logically speaking, I don't know with any certainty that my religion is correct, but the same idea applies to whatever religion (if any) is true. So if the stipulation is added that whatever religion (if any) is true would never decrease in its followers—either stay the same size or increase—then yes, I would.

As sad as it sounds, a perfect world would over-populate the earth, there would be more humans to feed and the food production would not catch up with the increasing rate of births. In other words, the world would end much faster if cancer and wars dissapeared.

I know it sounds harsh and even mean, but its the truth. We can have a perfect world, but the planet would have a much shorter lifespan if we had.

Huh, that's a really good point actually. I hadn't even thought of that.

That's kind of a contrived question, isn't it? I mean, yeah, I'd think that a good chunk of people would sacrifice themselves if they could bring about a perfect world with absolute certainty, but I don't see that as a particularly interesting way of looking at self-sacrifice. I think having some context and investment outside of "you (as a presumed normal person) die and somehow the entire world is perfect now" would bring about a more interesting look into people concept of self-sacrifice.

But to answer the question in the OP, yes, if I could be assured beyond a shadow of a doubt that the world would be perfect then I wouldn't mind taking one for the team.

I would not as i believe that nothing lasts forever and there for my sacrifice may bring a century or even a millennia of this it will end and my sacrifce would inevitbly cease to matter.

If the cake isn't a lie then sure.

Im going to die and move on into infinity anyways,so why not just give whatever's left of my small amount of time here to bring peace to the ones i leave behind?

Of course in the end it doesn't matter as there's the possibility when im gone you all cease to exist anyways. :o

With that being said,i would still do it....only if i can go out like this:

No because I'm a special kind of evil.  I believe world-peace is no world at all, just world pieces, humans are aggressive by nature and the utopia won't last forever.

I don't think so. A "perfect" world should, by nature of it's perfection, not cause such a thing to happen. "How?" you ask... Beats me, I'm not the one making it a perfect place :P

The same logic applies to most other forms of "perfect-imperfect" arguments.

Would I do it? Depends on my mood   To make a D&D reference: I'm chaotic neutral >_>

Short answer, yes.

Honestly, I'm afraid of death. But I would do anything I had to if everybody in the world would be happy. Realistically, I don't think such this would ever happen to me, cuz we are speaking hypothetically. But practically, I would somehow find a way of braving death.

A perfect world requires people to have their thoughts muted to prevent the formation of new ideas. If ideas can't be formed, there's no motivation to go to war or fight. This is the only way I can see the peace lasting otherwise people will start launching terrorist attacks on one another with no intervention. The food situation can be handled with a load of soda crackers and ration slips.

With the possibility of this dystopia in mind, I'm going to say "yes." If it actually was a perfect world, I'd wish I was alive to see how long it would last!

its true on the over population it will bring if a perfect world was made but if self sacrificing myself will brung people to accept people from all over with compassion and understand rather then themselves for survival then i will do so. i mean if its a duty for me to do this no matter what happens and its for the greater good for others to understand others and work together through situations it should be done (like i believe disease is still going to be around. same with famine and people disagreeing. no pony or person is truly perfect. to me a utopia is when people finally understand one another, able to work together harmounously, and dont judge whatso ever on what a pony, likes, says or feels about certain things.) if all that could be accomplish i will gladly do so. as long as people remeber me and change there point of views thats all i really wish for then afterwords.

I would not choose this. Humans do not deserve to live longer than they can. If they destroy themselves, so be it. No saving them. Parasites is what they are, and would you want to help them? The dying thing would be helpful though, lessen the species and all that.

He who hates humans can exercise the power to take human life and should start with himself.

Exercising power over the weak sounds like an absolutely terrible way of attempting to benefit anyone, including yourself.

That's a very bleak and depressing way to look at your own species.

I have planned myself a bright future, and so far, things have been going well and accordingly.  My family, and my friends all seem to be doing pretty good as well.

And I don't really care that there might be some problems going on between countries, governments... etc.
And I don't really care that gas prices might be high, that I don't like the president, and that college is expensive and I'm almost broke.

As far as I can see, there is no need for a utopia.  Because, to have world peace would be to take away our free will as individual thinkers.  We're better off as it is.

Call me what you will, but there's no way I'd die for "the world" anyway (for any reason).

The only way I'd do such a thing is if an Angel of the Lord brought a message from Him (God), saying that I should do so.  Then, I would.

Now, in a situation only slightly related - I don't have children right now; I'm only 19 and am focusing on college... But, in the future, should I find a women to marry, and we have kids... I would die for my child[ren] without a second thought.

The truth is always the most wanted thing, but is the most hated when known. Natural selection should be left to decide the fate of everything, not some untrustable deal. The person could be an organ theif after all.
