Why is Pinkie Pie too obsessed with BFF's?

Actually, no.I have the same problem as Pinkie, its the result from our socialism. We get left alone and we go crazy and think no bofy likes us.You put us in a group we flip out and become overly happy. This behavior may have little to do with childhood and its just her personality, like I said I have the same problem, so I see why Pinkie would do that.Just a sign of wanting to be around people.

I think that Pinkie has one of the poorest self-esteems of the mane 6.  I think it was Dr. Wolfe (but it might be another reviewer) that pointed out that Pinkie may not have any close friends outside the mane 6.  Sure, the whole town loves her, but not in an up-close personal way.  So she may see herself as unlovable.  (She didn't even value her own birthday enough to expect a party or anything.)

If this is true, then it's not an obsession with BFF's but a paranoia about the world.  The fact that she can overcome this paranoia is one of the lovable parts of her character.

Sometimes I think Pinkie is just borderline depressive. Her happiness seems to rely on the happiness of others and when she doesn't have that, the tends to go over the edge.

Like you said, she's overly social. Some people love friends more than anything, while some people need some time to be alone. Pinkie's just one of those ponies who loves to spend time with friends, it's as simple as that.

I read somewhere of a study done where people would rather take a painful electric shock than spend time alone with their thoughts. I think some people just hate the thought of being alone, and Pinkie is one of those. So when she actually is alone, she doesn't deal with it very well.

We all need other people. Some need them more than others, I guess.

You betcha! People nuts crazy when they're alone for too long! So crazy they will talk to inanimate obejects and make friends with them. And Pinkie just gets really happy when she's around people she really great friends with and stuff. Admit it, we've all done it once or twice. I have maybe. been overly happy....

My headcanon to why pinkie pie is obsessed with friends and positive energy is because she had a rough past. with her optimism with equestria and the ponies who lived there, plus with a little help of rainbow dash. She wants to erase those sorrow moments she had and change to a new lifestyle, a new pinkie pie where she can live happily and making sure no one experience what she felt from her past life. There's this saying "The most happiest person is the one who's hurt the most".

This is because the events happened on party of one and cutie mark cronicles that gave me this idea.

By just observation alone - it's because she gains more energy and happier when having near around her friend, their company is like a fuel to pinkie ;3

Well, I don't think Pinkie has issues with her past at all. She still has a deep love for her family and even defended the idea of rock farming when she was telling Trixie off. Unless people are hanging on to a headcanon idea.

I do think that Pinkie's self worth is constantly in need of validation ... which is why she overreacts when her value system is tested. She desperately wants to be needed and loved.

Friendship actually emits a low frequency electromagnetic radiation. This is not unlike the waste heat produced by biological matter when it processes nutrients. However, Pinkie Pie, like Trixie is not actually a pony but in fact an alien that survives and receives sustanence by consuming this radiation.

Trixie is evidenced in this effect because as a result some of her absorbed energy is reflected back as Cherenkov radiation. This is why her coat is such a vibrant blue.

Don't forget how much she loves Maud, she even volunteered to stay at the rock farm for Maud -- if she had family issues that seems ... odd to do.

But we'll find out in season five.

This is one of those times in which I wanna say "noooooooooo no no pinkie's just a sweet cute happy pone, and they just have made her seem to have issues for eps like party of one and so on just for funny interesting episode ideas' sake"... and to basically ignore any time it seemed too serious, that it was just the writers being silly.  But we have...

 - Party of One:  "I need my friends around as close to 24/7 as possible, and I need them to appreciate what I do as often as possible."

 - Baby Cakes:  "I need to be seen as dependable and I can't handle very much stress or failure or I will have a breakdown."

 - A Friend in Deed:  "I need to be the VERY BEST at what I do and NEVER fail, or I will immediately lose all self-worth."

 - Too Many Pinkie Pies:  "I need to be able to experience as much time as I possibly can with my friends, or at least around them."

 - Wonderbolts Academy:  "I can't handle someone close to me being gone for very long at all."

 - Pinkie Pride:  See Friend in Deed

 - Maud Pie:  "Despite seeming so 'random' I at times need for everything to go just right, like I have planned out in my head."

...so yeah it's a bit hard to deny.  I love that pone though and I hope she can gain more *self* appreciation in time though... it's kinda funny how both her and Flutters have obvious issues that seem so very different but both come down to "low self-opinion" it seems.

I actually feel like many of us, though, share at least a couple of these symptoms with pinkie, to some degree or another.  I know I sure do; though I have nearly no friends at the moment and completely 0 irl, I badly crave them every single day and if I had them I'd probably have some of these issues at least a bit.  The only one I do think is really downright freaky is her extreme obsessing over Dash just being gone a matter of days in Wonderbolts Academy which is just one of the reasons that ep's a bit uncomfortable for me to watch, but I feel like that truly WAS the writers just being a bit silly and exaggerated as they tended to be a lot in S3.

Because it's part of her character?

In all seriousness, she wants everypony to be her friend. She did grow up on a rock farm where it was all boring. I can't imagine she had many friends outside her family since the farm was way out in the middle of nowhere, so maybe the idea of making friends sort of sounded excited whenever she moved to Ponyville. That would actually explain a lot.

Pinkie Pie entire life is the people around her. She's more generous than Rarity, in a sense: 100% of her free time is spent on others. She doesn't even seem to have personal attachments(vanity objects or whatnot); everything she keeps with her is explicitly to make others happy. I think... I think Pinkie Pie has no self-worth. Without her friends, without someone to cling to, she believes she's nothing. This is a pony who's so afraid of facing life alone that she recreated her entire world; her, her friends, and her sense of connection: parties. The entity known as "Pinkamena" is not a murdering psychopath, but a self defense mechanism, Pinkie Pie's last resort to preserve who she is.

Balloons...they float so high, but there's nothing inside.

I don't even like Trixie all that much... but Da-Yum! That shine, that glimmer, that luminescence... Whoever made this pic has some mad skills!

I agree with this. I think Party of One outlined that she fears loneliness more then just about anything. As if the sadness will come crashing in if she spends too much time by herself.

That's what makes Pinkie, Pinkie. She's the element of laughter, and like the Smile song says, she loves to make everypony smile. :)  Ain't nothing wrong with that.
