"Distance not to Scale", that and the fact that there are places named that are not on that map leads me to wonder 'just how big is Equestria?'

Do you imagine Equestria to be this vast sprawling landscape with many towns and villages not listed on that map? Or do you imagine Equestria to be a lot smaller in scope with not that much more than shown below? Is is it somewhere in between?

If you vote 'other', please explain.

Edit- I changed the poll to make it better, sorry if you now have to change your vote.

I always imagined it  as equal in size to north america, and with its very similar geography and even ponified names of the same cities I would suggest that Equestria as both a landmass and country is similar in size to North America, so while it can be vast and open in various areas there are areas that are very enclosed.

I imagine Equestria as being relatively small and rural. There are only a few bustling cities that we know of, namely Canterlot and Manehatten, and while Cloudsdale is widely respected it has nowhere near the sophisticated reputations of those cities. There's a huge amount of wilderness in Equestria, and very few roads have been cleared--many ponies travel by Rariot chariot and those who don't sometimes trek through fire swamps. Equestria is definitely larger than other nations, such as the Crystal Empire, and is definitely desirable as a piece of land. Discord, Chrysalis and Tirek must have chosen Equestria for a reason. I'd say Equestria has large, bustling cities scattered around, but the areas in between these cities are overgrown and really cannot be passed.

I still think Equestria is the ponified version of the United States, so they would be equal in size.

More like, United States and Canada. But that doesn't necessarily mean similar size.

It seems pretty small to me actually. Notable towns seem way to spread apart for it to be North American size. Then in Daring Don't they seemingly traveled a long distance on the map in a short amount of time. So if I were to guess it's the size of an island or very small continent.

The show is actually a documentary filmed in a particularly difficult to reach part of the Australian outback. The entire land only takes up about the size of Rhode Island, but it's bigger on the inside. You could really fit about three Alaskas and a Colorado in there if you knew what you were doing.

As for population and distribution, there are a few higly populated urbanized areas. However, much like China, the majority of the country consists of small villages and farming communities located in the scenic "Middle of Bumfuck Nowhere" region. These are little places for which there is very little public understanding or even knowledge. Ponyville is borderline in this group, it certainly fit in location-wise, but recieves enough attention from the princesses to keep it out.

The geography of the region is really quite unique. The coastal regions, particularly in and around the area of Manehattan, are almost dead-on for U.S. East Coast. Modestly forested, generally flattish, and with an overall cool climate. The  expansive northern region is rather mountainous with a surprisingly arctic climate. Much of the terrain here consists of snowfields and glaciers. Moving east from the coastline we hit a mountain chain (Canterlot sits atop its highest peak) and then a rolling grasslands area. Some small forests are interspersed throughout this region, which has a relatively mild climate. Ponyville sits on the boundary between this and the next region east, the Everfree. Thick, nearly impassable forestation with meandering rivers weaving through and interspersed wetlands. The grasslands around Ponyville slowly give way to a rather arid climate to the south, with topography reminiscent of Arizona or New Mexico. On the southern edge of the arid zone lies a mountain chain, south of which lies a small wet zone. Many lakes, some marshes, and lots of flora and fauna. Directly south of the wetlands and wrapping around to the east of the Everfree is a spectacular karst region very similar to the South China Karst. This region is continuously fog shrouded and quite impassable, so no attempts have yet been made by those within its borders to cross it.

Well to me it's big and vast with several settlements. I've rarely heard any mention of smaller towns in Mlp, so I'd assume most ponies just live in the cities, or they live in lonely settlements scattered anywhere.

Its seems to me that Ponyville is a just one of many small towns but just happens to be the small town closest to Canterlot.
