How do you create your fan art or OC?

Hello, I don't know if I'm posting this in the wrong discussion area but how do YOU, create your OC or fan art. I don't RP or even tried (Only in-game ex. Garry's Mod) But I'd love to make fan art if I had a drawing tablet and proper editing tools. Anyways I wanted to know how you created your art. Or what program, tools, tablet or maybe even a scanner from paper. Do you think using the Pony creator is "cheating"? I created my profile picture with a reference photo and made it from Paint.NET, anyways I just wanted to know if that's okay :3

I use Sai

It costs money, but I pirated that sh*t like a boss. A poor boss.

Barring that, I draw on paper.

Or are you asking for a step by step process?

I used the Pony Generator, after I had decided ahead of time what my OC would look like, and what aspects of her personality would reflect in that.  Ain't nothing wrong with using the Generator, because we can't help it if some of us can't draw worth a wheat penny and don't care to outsource the work.

I guess but I'm actully decent with graphic arts but making "Things" and ponies are kinda hard for me, I've tried to use GIMP but I don't know how to use it.

Download a free trial of Paint Tool Sai, see how it works for you. Get a feel for it and stuff.

Okay, will do. If its good enough I will download it. I tried Photoshop and it was amazing for editing. I make content for Garry's Mod 13's Workshop so maybe it would help? Like editing tools? Or something. Anyways I will give it a shot.

If you dig it, tell me in a PM, I'll give you my copy

Unless, of course, you want to spend 60 bucks on it :s

I'm not really looking into spending $39 for photoshop a month. So I'm just downloading it as we speak, oh wait, its done already. I'll PM if I decide if I want to stick to it. It looks nice though. Anyways thanks :3

I guess your right, I might get my pony and then just edit it the way I want.

I had made something fairly fast and my writing not the best but I figured maybe I could trace this from my Paint.net or something after I make them. This was about 5-7 minutes. I think I'm fairly good (Haven't drawn ponies in a LONG while) plus this was really quick.

I start off my fan art by drawing it out on paper. I do have a tablet, and while I use it, I tend to draw things much better on paper rather than with a tablet.

The next thing I do is to take a photo and put it onto Photoshop. Since my fan art tends to be rather medium in image size, I shrink the photograph to my liking.

I open up a wonderful program called Paint Tool SAI. I do all of the line art, the colouring and the shading there. After that, I open up Photoshop again touch up the picture such as colouring the line art.

As for the Pony Creator, I would probably consider it cheating if you copy out the entire thing. If you at least done something such as modifying the mane a little rather than copying it, that'll be much better. I hope my post helps you in any way. :P

I used Pony Creator because I am completely worthless at drawing. lol

It takes practice, I haven't drawn ponies in a very long time so it got a little rusty. But I just need to tune them up a little.

I use SAI when i have a ton of inspiration, if not i use mypaint.. They both turn out nice. ^^

MyPaint is free though ^^ But i'd still reccomend both of them..

Also, i'd try to stay away from pony creator.. .

When i have a large project with a ton of stuff in it with most likely a group of ponies i like to sketch it out on paper until i have a picture that i like and then i sketch out the final picture i chose digitally, Then you've gotta do lineart.. base-colouring...Shading, background colour, and then if im really pleased with it i get exited and run it through some photoshop filters to give it a nice finishing touch! :)

Uhm...

Yeah!

Seeya! ^^

I don't think the Pony Creator is cheating, but even if it is, then why should anyone except you care? Maybe if you were entering your OC into a contest, but if you aren't... I mean, they do look like the actual ponies from FiM.

Anyway, I usually draw ponies with just a pencil and paper, which I've done for my OC as well. Then I color them in with colored pencil.

Another thing I do is just recolor RD pics with MS Paint (my OC has RD's mane/tail style) although it's not exactly original.

I recommend getting a Wacom Intous for drawing, you you are interested. A small one costs around $99 and it comes with a program. But for me, I use FireAlpacca. It's like SAI but dumbed down and looks different.

I use inkscape to vectore my oc

at first I use random bases that I find on google images and vector them to exact my OC appearance now im using my own base to vector. like first I traditionally draw them then after I vector my work. ireally felt guilty when using someone's base when vectoring. it always gives me that "Unoriginality" feeling :(

I use either a sketchbook or remain purely digital with my Wacom Intuos with Photoshop CS5. If you have Photoshop, I recommend sticking with that. It's got the easiest interface for me to navigate, even if it's a bit complicated for the simplistic things I do. Before I got my tablet, I used to use a mouse. So there's that option as well.

Also, I think Pony Creator is good for a very very basic idea, but it shouldn't be relied on excessively. The ponies from that tend to have bad anatomy and look just unsettling as well, so there's that to consider.

I'll keep the file handy.

I draw directly onto the computer using my wacom tablet and a free drawing software called "Firealpaca" which is like a simple version of photoshop (which I plan to purchase soon)

My process of creating any art usually goes- rough quick sketch > new layer > clean line art > delete sketch> new layer underneath> add flat colours > build tone and shadows up over them, almost as though I am painting.
