Painkillers? Also, experiences with medications?

So, I went to the doctors about my severe back pain (arthritis is common in my family) and they've given me codeine painkillers for my back... I'm taking them as directed but I'm worried because they're addictive. I already feel really happy and euphoric and floaty, should I be worrying about this or not? I've only got a two week supply, does this have the potential to get me addicted?

Anyway, I'd like to ask MLP forums what experiences you've had in the past with medications, whether they be pain related, anxiety/depression related or anything related.

Love. :3

You shouldn't have to worry about that if you take the medication as directed and prescribed by your doctor. My dad takes codeine and it has the same effects; a two week supply is not normally enough to cause addiction. So no, don't worry about it however if you do in fact find yourself getting addicted stop using them immediately and contact you doctor.

I can understand why people get addicted, my anxiety is gone. GONE gone. I'm usually anxious constantly, but I feel nothing but comfort and bliss right now, not to mention my pain is alot less worse than it was.

There are guidelines and specifics they should follow, so you shouldn't worry about addiction, they tailor the prescription to match you. :)

As for medications... i was taking a medicine for anger outbursts when i was younger. When i undergone a massive surgery on my leg a few years ago, i had taken Oxycontin and Metamizole to relieve the pains when i they got really bad.

I had some pills before because I couldn't sleep, and I developped an addiction. I usually forget to take them, but this time not. And after some time, I felt the need to take them earlier, so I did. Then I realized and stopped.

The most important thing is to fix a time where you take your pill, so you won't take it early or even twice. And if you feel an urge to take it early, well, stop, and contact your doctor.

Yeah, just take your medication exactly as the doctor prescribed it for you, and you shouldn't have to worry about addiction. Like GhostPony said, it's good to fix a certain time each day to take it.

As for me, I do take a pill daily, but I won't mention what it's for since you guys might think it's gross. I'll just say that I've never felt addicted to it.

I personally think medical marijuana is way way better than pain pills but legally speaking that is kind of in a gray area right now. As someone who has had 5 knee injuries most of which were workers comp matters I have had way more experience with pain pills than anyone should ever have. During my 1st knee injury they really gave me the strong stuff, of course there was this one pill (I don't remember which one) and when I read the side effects it scared me so much that I decided I wasn't going to touch them no matter how bad the pain got. Through that and my 2nd and 3rd injury I escaped the really bad side effects thankfully. With my 4th and 5th injury though I deal with constipation which is a common side effect of some pain pills and decided that taking them wasn't worth it. Of course my situation is different than yours, everyone has a different pain tolerance level and degree of severity of pain condition, I have a high tolerance for pain which is good because it helped get through these injuries but is also bad because it caused me to underestimate the extent of how hurt I was and caused me to push myself much further than I should have.

i have codeine a lot if i'm sick or whatever.  i'm not addicted.  i REALLY like it, but i'm not going to like go off and steal some.  lol

the best medication for back pain that i've been given was morphine.  i have a pretty high drug tolerance, so that's all i could have that would work at the time.

talk to your doctor about your anxiety and maybe he could prescribe you something long term for it.

Well, I'm no doctor, but I am an ex smoker. Some people might scoff at the idea of cigarettes as being a serious addiction when compared to other "hard" drugs, but I feel strongly that smoking gave me an understanding of addiction most people who haven't ever been addicted to something just wouldn't get. My childhood best friend also became a drug addict and my (adopted) brother is an alcoholic, so I've seen how evil addiction can be. Aside from depression, it's the most evil thing I've ever seen firsthand.

Addiction is a tricky thing. Why are you worried about becoming addicted? If you have no history of addiction, you might not have a reason to be overly concerned.  The important thing to realize is that addiction isn't a rational thing. It causes you to make excuses and do things you normally wouldn't. As long as you're able to stick to your prescription regimen, you will probably be fine. If the medicine you're on makes you feel "high" or euphoric, it doesn't necessarily mean you're becoming addicted to it. If you find yourself wanting to take it for reasons other than your back pain, or you start making excuses to take it too often or something like that, you might have reason to worry.  If you have concerns, you really should have a conversation with your doctor about what a long term solution to your condition will be.

I was given hydrocodone for my wisdom teeth extraction last year and I loved it. After taking it, I knew I was still in pain but I simply didn't care. A few weeks later, I still had a few pills left over and I found myself thinking I could take them to cure headaches, back pains, etc and I REALLY started to worry, because things like that are hallmarks of addictive thinking.

Anyway, the TL;DR version of my advice is to stick to your regimen, but if you find that difficult or find that you're wanting the drug too often or for other reasons, talk to your doctor. They say that the way a drug affects you is based partly on your expectations, so if you expect to become addicted, the odds may be slightly higher that you will. If you have no reason to believe you will, then you shouldn't expect to.

Oh, I am very sorry! I cannot say I know that feeling. But I will also say that I do not feel sorry for you. I know a lot of people do not want to be pittied, so I wont for you. I myself take Zoloft for my anxiety issues. It helps a great deal and it has next to no side-effects! As far as pain goes, just the regular non-prescription pain killers I use in case if I have a head ache or something like that. But I think you are looking for something stronger...

I would suggest talking to your doctor about all of your concerns. I know Codeine often makes people feel the way you now do, but I dont really think that means you are getting hooked. Rather it is just a side effect. If you start to feel like you need that feeling that Codeine only gives you, then you should tell your doctor. I would say tell your doctor this concern anyways.

Ether way, I will pray for you during Dhuhr.  :)

Went to the dentist to get some wisdom teeth pulled, dentist prescribed me Vicodin which worked great for me and never seemed to form any kind of a habit thank celestia. It's not that it makes the pain go away, it just really makes you not give a fuck.

Just be careful, and if it makes you feel too "good" then it would probably be a good idea to check with your doctor to get your dose reduced if necessary.

I had no pain but I use to indulge on Advils and Pain Killers my brother had but stopped using

Now it has no effect on me

My advice is take as prescribed

When you crave more eat a certain food or gum or simply fight temptation

It's alright though it's suppose to feel that way :)

From what I recall, it is possible to become addicted to codeine. However, if you take it exactly as your doctor prescribed, you should be fine. That being said, it'd be a good idea to ask your doctor about these symptoms you are experiencing.

I was prescribed hydrocodone this summer when my tonsillitis had reached its most painful moments. I had been sick for about a month, and the pain kept getting worse.

Hydrocodone was serious business. If I recall correctly, its potency is similar to if not the same as morphine. It took the pain away completely for temporary spaces of time. I was also taking a powerful antibiotic, so by the time I ran out of hydrocodone the pain stayed down for the most part. It only took me a few days to run out, as hydrocodone is very dangerous so I was only given a small amount.

It's essential to take the directions your doctor gives you seriously. Never take medicine in a way that differs from the directions given upon prescription. For example, from what I recall hydrocodone can become both physically and mentally addictive. Additionally, if you take it in excessively large amounts it can result in your brain no longer telling your lungs to breathe.

Also, the hydrocodone I took was bundled with large amounts of acetaminophen. Despite the fact that acetaminophen is found in many common OTC medications such as Tylenol, it is extremely dangerous and can result in death if taken in excess amounts.
