I could use a bit of advice.

One of my best friends, who has a bit of a temper, often tends to mistake acts of kindness towards for I guess you could call it disrespect. A good example being, yesterday I was at his house with another friend, we were playing some halo, and his mother came in with no joke freshly baked cupcakes, she gave us a plate of them to snack on. After she left he was visibly annoyed saying this like "really cupcakes, what are we kids" meanwhile the other friend and I were already eating the cupcakes. It mostly tends to happen with things such as that, I am probably looking too much into it. But he lately has been getting increasingly bitter and easily frustrated. Should I be worried because he's never been like this not to this extent and I am not quite sure what to do about it.

Some people just take things a different way. Acts of kindness can make them feel weak or small than they actual are. They feel inferior and he demands to respect. It's a bit harsh but that's people's nature it varies. The best you can do is figure out why without causing more damage

The biggest issue is not knowing what is causing the problem. It could be something simple from lack of sleep to something extreme like family issues. My advice is to be patient. Keep spectating like you do and see if you can spot the things that set him off or that you see him struggling with. Depending on the type of person he is, ask how everything is every so often.

Sounds like he was just embarrassed and is at an age where he wants to be viewed as / treated like an adult.  And he picked an especially silly moment for that desire to come out.  Seems like rather typical behavior for someone his (presumed) age, though.  It'd be comparably more mature for him to just munch on the cupcake next time and not let his ego get in the way of enjoying a tasty snack.  When he's, like, thirty-something he'll wish he'd had more pre-adulthood cupcake moments.  His doctor may have even sworn him off of cupcakes by then. xD

P.S. / Edit: Perhaps he thinks he has to maintain a minimal level of "coolness" around his friends??  I used to act differently around my mom when friends were present.  It was sooooo a misguided waste of effort and energy.

Who gets mad at CUPCAKES?

Maybe bring it up with him parents or something if you're really worried.  That you see his personality changing.  Maybe he needs to see a therapist.

Maybe he's going through puberty.

Who knows.
