What's the problem with EQG?

As a late follower of MLP:FiM I did some research and asked fellow Bronies about EQG many stated to ''NEVER WATCH IT''. I for one by watching a few snippets it looks interesting, but what's the negative aspect about it?

That and some Bronies are in a frenzy with the supposed Equestria Girls Academy which in my opinion sounds awesome!

More Pony screen time :):D

EqG isn't that bad to don't watch it, but the movie isn't good enough for an MLP movie, not even for an MLP episode, the plot isn't good, the villian is stupid, Twilight's crush is a one-dimensional character, the dialogues are generic, etc.

Because the cast went from dealing with manticores, dragons, reality-warping spirits of chaos, harbingers of doom, shapeshifting love-eaters, and other dangerous creatures to...What...a poorly paced, stereotypical, trope-saturated high school drama?

i like Equestria Girls its all right but i wish it had a batter story like in the cartoon i mean in My Little Pony Friendship is Magic they fighting evil monsters & saveing & so on but Equestria Girls was pretty much about a school dance...

well i like my little pony how it is right now.. with the cute little ponys. And Equestria Girls are not cute

That's understandable, but seeing as it's a pre-teen girl show I'm certain it's more aimed towards that demographic?

But on the other hand it seems like there's more Bronies...

Sounds like an average highschool day/prom :/

Rainbow Rocks is coming out soon so that should be interesting

People don't like changes, they always want things to stay the same.

They didn't like the idea of ponies being human.

I personally liked the movie, it was quite more enjoyable than most episodes of the show imo.

Well personally I don't mind it but it might have something to do with the High school setting which is not so popular with the older fans...

some bronies see EG on the girly side at some points maybe a little but myself I find it fairly well done although I DO feel it could be a little better

some bronies say the writing was sloppy/bad well at some points I can agree however it had many good and interesting scenes mixed in

and wow that  battle at the end was epic

another reason may be because it is different which I have discussed similar on another forum a difference can have a big result within anything really so it's not surprising

so I can understand why some bronies dislike the movie but myself I give it a 6/10.

I dont have a problem with the movie. I actually liked the movie because of the story line. However, I felt that the movie was a bit rushed and could've been executed alot better.

If the movie was longer and had a better story line and had more use for Sunset Shimmer instead of making her a stupid bitch. They could've made her more clever instead of stupid. She had slot of potential in which I wish that they would've given us more information on her backround. How long was she Celestias student? How old she was? What happened between her and Celestia? You know we could have got to know Sunset Shimmers character more if they would of given more effort and time into the movie for character development.

For Twilights character, I would have loved to see her do research of the human race.( i think she did, but there is no proof ). It was odd for Twilight to quickly learn to walk on two feet and use two hands. Spike had no issue because even though he walks on twos. He walked on fours in the show in some scenes.

Some of the songs in the movie weren't needed. I can understand that it's a kid friendly movie, but it doesn't need to be a musical. Although: The help twilight win the crown) song is one of my faves.

I wish thwt there could've been a better backround of Flash Sentry and Twilight together and how he liked her and why he likes her.

My overall point here,

Its a good movie if you enjoy movies like this. But, thought id just point out things of how and why some bronies do not like the movie.

hmm why do so many bronies hate this movie so much...that's a good question

I mean it can't be the characters because they're all still their charming selves (just physically different). It can't be the story line, because even though it's contrived and childish, My little pony has its fair share of cliche predictable plots as well...and It can't be the music because it's catchy as hell, and has the typical poppy sound of many mlp songs.

This leaves me to believe it's purely down the the setting. If Equestria girls haven't been set in a high school I think bronies would've gone a lot easier on it. Think about it, you wouldn't have the hunky guy flirting with Twilight, there wouldn't be a prom or a make over scene, Celestia wouldn't be reduced to a mere principle. All of the cliches that have gotten bronies so worked up would be gone...plus I think bronies like to escape when they watch MLP, putting their form of escapism into a high school setting might've been annoying for some.

I do like changes, i didn't mind about them being humans, or Twilight having a crush, or even the fact that a whole magic world is just an school in the human dimension, the whole problem was the way it was done, even the most stupid plot (like ponies using the magic of friendship) can make an awesome result if it is well done, but it wasn't.

There were some aspects to it that I found awkward, like the fact that they were all wearing skirts, or the crush Twilight had. In spite of that, I found it to be watchable, you might end up liking it yourself.

cause the music is so fucking cheesy its so cringy to listen to it, its not worth the ear bleeds, and with an average as fuck storyline its not worth getting trough it

That's a really good response, I was thinking the same it's still overall the same Ponies we enjoy watching.

I for one don't have a problem with it being in a High school setting but agree on the cliches and the love aspect (flirt) that may have been overdone the series is called 'Friendship is Magic' I would have expected more elements of friendship rather than your typical high school prom.

(btw I haven't see EQG but read some of the plot)

The song 'Help Twilight win the crown' is infectious. Good infectious really catchy too!

But yeah I understand your point, going to give it a watch :)

The first time I watched it I was just so happy it was out. Then aftr watching it again I found it was missing detail to the polt. I liked how the movie added to the back round of that happend before twilight came along. So the whloe FlashxTwilight thing was just so that flash would help twilight out ONCE. The develepment wan't that good. Sunset shimer was just the stupidest villen; even in the preview for EG2, Sunset says how stupid the demon girl thing was, and don't get me started on the brain washed teen army. Also I don't like the skirts that all the girls wore espesaly the fact that rainbow dash was even apple jack's was a little and weird. All though the first movie wasn't good I'm giveing the second one a try.

Actually, I like that song, too. I have it stuck in my head right now.

Even though I liked EQG a great deal, I'll state what problem I do have with it.

First off, FiM is an entirely original show. It's not trying to emulate or be anything else. It's its own show. You can't point to another show in the demographic and say, "oh ya, FiM is just trying to rip XXXXX off". That originality let's the writers define the setting, the characters, and the wide range of possibilities for where the show can go. EQG on the other hand is quite clearly a ripoff of Monster High, and because Monster High is the typical vapid, brainless, trash, toy companies have always put out, having MLP emulate it just drags it into the dirt and severely hampers its ability to tell a story, or allow the viewer to see themselves in the characters. Because of MH, EQG is trapped in a high school setting, completely removing the writer's ability to expand the story beyond the scope of the school setting.

Now I'll talk about what EQG does right, which is to the credit of the brilliance of the FiM team. They took this MH ball and chain and ran a marathon with it. UNLIKE a typical show, the main character is a book worm. UNLIKE a typical show, that book worm is made to be the fall formal princess. UNLIKE a typical show, the title of fall formal princess comes with the duties of student body president. UNLIKE a typical show, the romantic interest is played off almost entirely comically, and at best is a secondary plot line. The characters were the same as always, the story was still interesting, funny, adhered to the sincerity and optimism of FiM, and helped FiM expand upon the coronation. After being denied a 2 parter for MMC, I'm sure they were glad to get to weave this into EQG and the S4 premiere. Basically we have Hasbro taking the mountain of dung that is MH, and using their characters to parody the genre in a fantastic way. As far as I'm concerned EQG is the standard bearer for how cartoon of this genre should be.

I don't much care for the genre EQG is based on, and that is high school dramas. At the very least, I dislike the vast majority of such films produced after the 80s. Most feature length films based on established cartoon series in the past have had their problems too. For what it's worth, EQG surpassed my expectations given that they weren't very high to begin with. I have my issues with it, of course. Despite having a full feature length film to develop Sunset Shimmer, she still ended up being flat, even compared to Trixie(and given that Snips and Snails followed Sunset Shimmer around, such a comparison was inevitable). I'm curious to see what Rainbow Rocks does with her now that she's reformed though.

I'm racking my brain for any way that EQG makes a difference to the plot of the show, and I'm drawing a blank. It may have its place in the canon, but it may as well have never happened. The premise is pretty fanficy, and not in a top of the line, award winning fanfic sort of way. The opening credits were the ultimate tease, because it made me wish I was watching a feature length film set in the main universe(which is why I'm really looking forward to Journey of the Spark).

I did, however, enjoy EQG. It's not The Breakfast Club of animated films, and it didn't really bring anything new to the genre, despite the show being known for putting clever spins on even the biggest cliches. However, I've seen worse, and I was expecting worse. If nothing else, it's harmless, and it has its fun moments, so while I can't in good conscious say it's a must watch, I wouldn't say it's the worst possible thing. I'd recommend watching it and drawing your own conclusions, if you haven't already. Besides, I'm sure it's a cosplayer's dream.

Equestria Girls was pushed as Twilight going to whole new world, but she spends most of the movie trying to win some redundant popularity contest or the world is doomed.

1. High school settings are filled with cliches, and not many bronies would want to see their beloved magical world get transposed into such a "lame" idea as that.

2. A forced storyline with forced elements that makes everything almost bland and illogical.

3. Boring, cheesy and annoying trends many tween girls will like - try thinking of "Hannah Montana" or "iCarly" for an example.

4. Commercialising the MLP franchise with points 1. and 4. , for the sake of competing and catching up with Mattel's "Monster High" and its popularity, and to grab scoopfuls of the tween girl market and their money.
