Is there such thing as luck? What do you consider as luck? Do you think luck is random? How do you define luck?

Example: You throw a dice,

you get 6. Is that luck or randomness?

You throw again:

you get another 6.  Is that luck or random coincidence?

You continue throwing:

you get 6 six times in a row. Is that luck or random coincidence?

Is luck random coincidence?

Is it luck when you win a lottery or did you just put the right numbers randomly right?

I think it's luck when results are against the odds, but that's basically same thing than unlikely happening random coincidence. Is luck another word with that meaning? Or is it something else?

What is luck exactly?

Technically "no". I know that "luck" isn't an actual force of the universe per say, but I do love the concept and it plays a role in my life. I find it particularly fascinating for whatever reason. So I suppose the answer is "Yes". I come from a family of extremely superstitious people, and that has rubbed off on me over the years.

I like to pick up 4 leaf clovers, try to land on 7, I consider 3 my "lucky" number, and I flip coins often to make certain decisions for me. Sometimes I feel lucky and might act on that presumption. It's just something that I like to think about. If you do good things, good things are more likely to happen in return for you. You can call that karma, luck, fate, anything.

I do not believe in luck.  Luck is just merely random coincidence. In fact, our world works on "randomness".

Everything is random (more or less, lol).

If you break everything down to the tiniest level, you can see (well, you can't actually see, because it's so small) that electrons behave randomly on a quantum level, but that's another topic.

Anyway, I am probably the unluckiest person in the world but I got used to it.

Of course I believe in luck!

I mean sometimes good things happen to me, and obviously that's good luck and then sometimes bad things happen to me and that's bad luck.

Thing is when I have good luck or bad luck seems to be totally random.

But it's not the results of things that are random coincidence, it's the luck that causes them that's random coincidence.

Obviously.

There's no such thing as 'random'. There are only factors you did not take into account. Whether something good or bad happens to me, i'll remain indifferent, and take it like a man.

I'm but a leaf blowing in the winds of circumstance. With no actual ability to perceive the myriad of variables, what can i do but play along?

WEll, one considers themselves lucky whenever certain events continue to happen in one's favor, and that of course, does happen. Rolling a die and getting the same number several times in a row is all just a coincidence, but you can say that it's luck.... This isn't an easy question to answer .

Serendipity. I completely believe in that. If not for one one event, one thread in my young adulthood, my life from that point would be completely and irrevocably changed. No family ... no kids ... no wife. The fact that I am talking to you via this website is due to many small threads. Little pieces of time where I made a decision or was effected by an event random or otherwise. Pull a thread ... your world changes.

Yes, and no.

Random chance certainly exists. Sometimes people have chance act in their favour, this is good luck, and sometimes against them, which is bad luck. What we call luck is merely the appearance of a pattern in chance that defies out expectations.

Ok.  So... I already see something that should really always be said as a given:  the definition of some words aren't always textbook; some are theoretical and may differ from person to person.

Now, that being said.  The way I have always understood "Luck," "Coincidence," and "Random" is as follows:

I believe that luck is not a general concept, but rather, that it is specific to each own individual.  For instance, I very much like the two phrases, "just my luck" and "as luck would have it."  I feel that someone's luck is a compilation of their past scenario's outcomes, be them positive or negative.  They each amount together and result in one's understanding of how they usually have done with [something] and if they're chances are any good.

Luck thus, is your own understanding of your past outcomes, and how you can derive the possible chances of something you might be about to do.  And, I guess, in the sense that I make it, it's not really superstitious.

Coincidence is just when two things "just so happen" to occur at the same time, seemingly making the experience twice as powerful.  Ergo, "The fun has been doubled."  But I don't see them as special.  They occur naturally.

Random just means unplanned, in my book.  Something that you choose, something that happened, without pre-planning.

Oh Jeric, you never cease to surprise me with your awesome posts!  Want to know what's crazy?  I have always thought about that "series of events" all summing up to one's current self, but I never knew the word for it!  Now I know; Serendipity.  I believe in that completely.

I mean, I wouldn't be on this site right now, if not for my [current roommate] friend having used the phrase "ponies" in Skype as an interjection to actually just mean "what's up?" LOL!  He's not, and wasn't ever a brony - I asked him.  His use of the word was irrelevant to MLP.  But, you see, after I questioned him about it, it was like self-inception - the idea had just been planted in my head.  At the time, I knew very little about MLP.  I only knew small stuff, like, for one, that some show existed with ponies (haha), and I also think I knew of the "mods asleep; post ponies" meme with Rainbow Dash.  So, despite him not being a brony, it was like the seed was already planted in my head.  I had the sudden urge to look up what the show was called.  Easily done, of course.  Then I read a little about it... And at that time, my curiosity was booming, I actually wanted to give it a try.  The Pilot Episodes were all it took.

That's just one tiny little thing that effectively grew into one huge thing.

Serendipity?  Definitely.  Luck?  Irrelevant.

I don't like the notion of luck because it implies you haven't earned something, either that or that you where not in an advantageous position to gain something due to certain circumstances. I do like to believe in the notion of being on the right path however which does link into the concept of luck but really is more to do with good fortune gained by making the right choices.

I'm guilty of using words like "luck" and "lucky", but even when I say it, I know better. I know most of it is coincidence, happenstance, random chance, etc.

Still, I think there is something to be said about the things that occur in your life, good or bad, that are so wild or amazing that you NEVER would have been able to predict it happening. And I also like to think we've all had, or will have, a "whatever happens, happens" moment in our life. You know, where chaos is just piling up all around us, we can't control any of it, so we just step back and let it happen.

yes I believe in luck I can't really remember any lucky experiences I had but my friend his motto is "I feel like I'm playing a game of cards with Death and I always seem to have an ace up my sleeve" he is gone through a lot he even admits there were times he should of died but didn't if that's not luck I don't know what is

Do I believe in luck? Sure, I flip a coin and sometimes it falls on tails.

What I don't believe in is coincidence. Everything happens for a reason, even if the reason is ultimately imperceptible to us at the time. One chance encounter can change someone's life for the better, I've seen it happen.

I would say though that, yes, I am very lucky (read: blessed). I was born to the greatest country on Earth, in a time of social liberty and technological progress, to a loving family, and have become involved with one of the greatest groupings of passionate fans in modern history.  :)

Do you believe in luck?- no, I don't. I feel very inclined to point that out when people say 'wish me luck!' and say I believe in them rather than luck, I can't help it. :P

Is luck random coincidence?- that's how I understand it, though I'm open to the idea that luck could exist and be something more meaningful than simple coincidence.

Do you think you are lucky?- maybe... my luck- if it exists- could be a lot worse, I realize, but I can't imagine people getting my luck and cheering about how fortunate they are with it. ._. Then again, it depends on how we judge who is lucky or unlucky, and I can only really try to do so with certain events, rather than people in whole.

I see 'luck' as just being a coincidence that has landed in your favour. I don't believe it's some sort of astral being or anything just a describing word for when things go your way despite the odds against it
