The Crimson Rage - Audio Drama (assembling)

Since there seems to be an increased interest in audio dramas, I've been thinking about trying to put one together for my fanfic, The Crimson Rage.  (A summary for those that haven't read it: "A disease caught in the Everfree Forest must be cured before it is too late..."  It's kind of like a zombie infection story, but without any blood or extreme violence.)

I'm personally able to handle music/sfx in the background of the reading, but as I have no voice acting talent whatsoever, I will need a lot of help with the actual reading.  There are a lot of parts in it, since it features pretty much all the major characters.  In particular, I will need (in order of appearance):

  • Narrator (easily the most lines, since it's pretty much everything BUT the dialogue)
  • Rainbow Dash
  • Applejack
  • Big McIntosh (doesn't have a lot of lines, surprise surprise  )
  • Twilight Sparkle
  • Rarity
  • Pinkie Pie
  • Apple Bloom
  • Sweetie Belle
  • Scootaloo
  • Spike
  • Fluttershy
  • Zecora
  • Cheerilee (only has one line, and some reaction sounds)
  • Mrs. Cake (not a lot of lines)
  • Mr. Cake (only has one line)
  • Random ponyville inhabitants (no actual lines of dialogue, probably just background sound stuff, I'm sure they can be provided by the other voice actors if needed)

(It should be noted that since it's a scary story, several of the characters will need to be able to sound scared at various parts.)

If there's enough interest in this, I think we should go for it.  Six chapters (each at least 30k words) is a lot to do, but I think it can be done if we can keep it all organized.  So if you're interested in taking part in it, let me know here.  Thanks!

Good point, I should pick audition lines for each character.  (Although for some of them like Cheerilee and Mr. Cake, the audition line would be the ONLY line.)

Since this is a scary story, and the characters will occasionally sound frightened, I think it's best if I have two lines for those characters, one normal and one frightened, just to make sure the emotion can be conveyed.

Alright, here's the list again with accompanying lines:

  • Narrator
    • "Something about the ambience immediately set it apart from normal woods.  It was subtle; the normal insect, bird and other animal sounds were different, more menacing and mysterious."
  • Rainbow Dash
    • (normal) “Just stopping by real quick to let you know, the wind’s settled down, and it should be clear weather from here on out.”
    • (panicked) "Fluttershy, wait…!  It's me, Fluttershy, it’s me!”
  • Applejack
    • (normal) "Why, between the two of us and Winona here, I’ll bet we can get everything cleaned up before Rainbow even gets back.”
    • (panicked) "This ain't gonna work!  It just ain’t!  There’s no way the two of us alone can hold off the whole town…”
  • Big McIntosh
    • "Eeyup."
  • Twilight Sparkle
    • (normal) “It could’ve been worse.  We should have everything straightened up in the next hour or so.”
    • (shouting) “No time!  We’ve got to get the plan going like she said!”
  • Rarity
    • (normal) “I do hope the sudden storm didn’t do any permanent damage to the library.”
    • (quiet, frightened) "Give up… no pony’s here… just give up, turn around and run out…"
  • Pinkie Pie
    • (normal) “No can do either.  I promised I’d help the Cakes clean up Sugarcube Corner.”
    • (seriously) "“I’ll cover your escape.  Get everypony to safety.”
  • Apple Bloom
    • (normal) “Scootaloo, these are beginnin’ to sound more like contests than tryin’ to find our talents.”
    • (panicked) “She’s gonna bring the whole clubhouse down!!”
  • Sweetie Belle
    • (normal) “All right!  What’s on the list for today, Apple Bloom?”
    • (panicked) "Wait!  If you try to throw that at her, she’ll just use it to climb up here!”
  • Scootaloo
    • (normal) “I’ll tell you all about it when we get to the clubhouse.  Let’s go!”
    • (panicked) “What are we gonna do?!”
  • Spike
    • (normal) "Aww, it was nothing.  Just doing my job as an upstanding citizen of Ponyville, that’s all.”
    • (afraid) “No way. Too dangerous!  We’ll never make it!”
  • Fluttershy
    • (normal) “I’m so sorry to wake up you from your nap, Angel, but we need your help, and we really, really need to go as soon as we can.”
    • (terrified) “B-but I thought… I thought it was just Applejack and Big Mac…?”
  • Zecora
    • (normal) “Ah, a welcome sight you are to see, but one should knock before entering my tree.”
    • (urgently) “Show me to her quick, Twilight!  I must find out if my fears are right!”
  • Cheerilee
    • “Hello?  Is somepony there?”
  • Mrs. Cake
    • (comforting) “I’m sure she’ll be fine.  She’s in good hands with her friends after all.”
  • Mr. Cake
    • (optimistically) “Yeah.  The things Pinkie’s capable of when she got her mind set on something… I know she’ll be all right!”

That should be a good sample of voices.  There are more variations throughout the story, some sounding sad, angry, or worried, and so on.  Also, anypony who gets infected will have angry growls (in particular, this will be most prominently heard by Big Mac, Applejack, Fluttershy, and Rainbow Dash).

Alright. I'll run some lines when I get home. I'm on my way to work now.

I like what I'm hearing for the narrator auditions.  So far I'm leaning towards Ragland's for a combination of tone and pacing.

dpstq's Big Mac sounds good, though it's probably fair to note that the ponies are not technically "zombies" in this story; they're just infected.  It makes them angry and act kind of animal-like (reduced to growls and such).  I was inspired by an old Smurf's episode ("The Purple Smurfs") because of how they were able to do a "zombie apocalypse" without any extreme violence or blood (in that one, the infected smurfs looked angry all the time and could only say "G'NAP!  G'NAP!").

For the past few hours, I've been repeatedly trying to record Mr. Cake's line, but somehow I just can't get the voice and pronunciation right. Should I record and submit my attempt at Mr. Cake anyway just to show you what I mean, and just to say that I auditioned? 'Cause I'm extremely skeptical on how it sounds, yet I still really badly want some voice acting gigs.

Do I have you on Skype yet? We can call and I can help you with pronunciation. Sometimes hearing it helps a lot! That's why we have the VA Guild.

Hi there!

May I audition over Skype?

I can do a variety of female voices. :)

No, you haven't, actually. My Skype name's the same as my username.

So is mine. Hey, if it works, why not use it for everything, right? At least as far as usernames. passcodes are another story.

It seems I did add you. just not to the guild for some reason... but yeah, if you want to work on those lines some time, I'm available in the mornings.

Whew, this is a lot of narrator auditions!  I've got a lot of deciding to do...

I don't have Skype set up for audio calls, but you can send a recording to timeshield@yahoo.com if you don't want to post it here.  I watched some of the videos in your YouTube, and I do like what I heard there.  You do a lot of the voices really well  :squee:
