What would you do if your best friend was an anti-brony?

Let's Just start speaking hypothetically.

Let's say you've been a brony for a while (which most of you most likely have) and your best friend doesn't know that you are a brony. One day, you go to casually approach him/her but then he turns out to be an anti-brony, BEFORE you mention it to him, he goes off about hating bronies with all those stereotypical insults you've grown to known and love (Ex. Autistic shut ins who have neck-beards and where those strapping fedoras).

Note: this isn't me asking for advice through hypothetical speech, it's just me being curious about what you would do in a situation like this.

speaking of which...

What would you do?

I actually have a best friend who is like that, I just try to hide any kind of signs that I'm a brony from him.  I think he saw my wallpaper on my phone once, it was pony related, but I don't think he cared

Well I already told my best friend, and despite the fact she doesn't like the show she's still my best friend. My other best friend likes it.

...but that's my life not your question. I'd say that she's being ignorant and that she shouldn't talk about people like that. If she's really my best friend she'll understand, if not, well that's unfortunate.

I told some friends that I liked the old MLP. And they were cool with it. A younger friend of mine prefer the new one, and I'm cool with it.

I've had some good pals in the past.

Also, anti-bronies are most likely just the typical irrational haters, people who don't have a life so they just annoy others. That's sad.

I would just ignore that friend of mine. But make him understand why I like it.

I see, I wouldn't say an anti-brony is just an irrational hater. in a sense we are all haters against something, but when your socially conditioned to be mindlessly sexist/ageist against one thing or another, it usually triggers some inside someone that screams weird. And generally, we are, though some people can handle weird, others not so much. Thus, the anti-brony  -_-

I normally can stand anything. I try to respect and understand everything, because that's the step forward to being better.

Life isn't always much easier that way, but I try to not hate. Because no matter how you look at it, hate is bad, very bad.

it also requires the same amount of feeling and compassion as love takes. It makes me laugh when people generally try to say they hate you then tell you they don't care about you.

First I'd ask "well, do you have proof? What have you seen that justifies your anger?" If he cites fox news/ Howard stern, then I'd tell him that they get paid to make fun of subcultures, and that you're probably not getting the whole picture. "You don't want your actions to be fueled by an incomplete image fed to you by a closed minded, money mongering, obsolete medium of media, do you?"

And if it's the whole argument that dudes shouldn't watch things fro kids/girls, I'd go into the whole, "so it's not alright for girls to watch GI Joe, Transformers, or play Mortal Kombat & Gears of War then? And it's not alright for adults to watch Loony Toons or Tom & Jerry either?" And if they question why am I defending a cartoon girls horse program, I'd reply, "just saving you from the flaws in your own logic" and ask,  "why are you so angry that anyone but yourself is watching it? How does it hurt you?" I wish I was this rational in real life.

But I could probably end it all by saying "Dude, I'm a Brony. And do you see a fedora and a neckbeard? No. You see a trilby and an actual beard. If those things are disproven, ask yourself, what else might be misconceptions?"  Again, I wish I was this classy.

If it turns out that they're an anti-brony, I wouldn't be offended or feel insulted.

In fact, I wouldn't really care.

I would continue to tell my friend about me being a fan of the show.

If they are my friend, they will acept me.

Here's the thing. If someone knows you personally, and they know your character, they won't care. Your conduct and established reputation sets the basis for how you're regarded, and when things like MLP are discovered at a later point, the perception you've created for yourself is going to lead them to think favorably of your affection of the show, and others like you. I can't think of a single person whom I'd consider a friend that I think even for a second would turn on me for liking MLP. I can think of people who would, but they're personally vile people, and by no stretch my friends.

I'd just tell him straight up that I'm an MLP fan (I don't like being known as a brony or pegasister). He knows I do well in school, have a job, and plenty of different interests, so that would show him that not all fans are losers.

This was the comment I've been waiting for. I can tell you right now that I agree with you 100%

I would tell him that I don't hate bronies.  I would then check to see if he's fine with my opinion and if he thinks it would affect our friendship.  I don't mind if he hates bronies as long as he doesn't hate me.  I have some friends with a strong hatred of metal, they hate metal music but we are still good friends.

This did sort of happen with my best friend and I. We simply agreed to disagree in our own nonverbal way and laugh about our contrasting positions on the matter. It's nothing to break long bonds over, we disagree on the quality of the first person shooter genre too.

I would tell them if it ever came up.  No point in just bringing it up out of nowhere.  If afterwards the continued to be against bronies and and insulting them I would remind them that I am one and their friend to try and prove them wrong about the stereotypes and such.  If after that they still continue I would distance my self from them.  I am loyal to my friends but being around someone like that is poisonous and in the end I would probably be better off not around such a hateful person.
