Some of my favorite albums of all time are the following:

post-11863-0-84630500-1412373196_thumb.jpg

Imaginaerum by Nightwish (symphonic power metal)

This is one of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard. Its expression is powerful and deeply touching. Evoking a wide range of emotions from wonder and joy to nostalgia and sadness, this has been one of my favorite albums for several years.

Omnivium by Obscura (technical death metal)

This is one of the most thought-provoking and intellectually challenging albums I have ever heard. Its lyrics are fundamentally based on the philosophical work On Nature's Connection to the Spirit World by Friedrich Schelling. Overall, while I have yet to truly understand the lyrics they seem to deal with a wide range of spiritual, religious, and philosophical concerns from a variety of perspectives.

Unsung Heroes by Ensiferum (melodic/folk death metal)

Ensiferum is one of my favorite bands. They're a fun band to listen to, and their songs range from having a more epic and robust sound to them to more unique and experimental pieces.

Breathe Fire to the Sun by Brymir (symphonic/melodic death metal)

I became a fan of Brymir just recently. This is their first studio album, and it is utterly fantastic. Their music is quite easily among my favorite if not my favorite in the symphonic/melodic death metal genre. They compose and perform both excellently, regarded separately and regarded in unison.

Time I by Wintersun (symphonic/melodic death metal)

I love this album. It's rather short, but one of its songs, Sons of Winter and Stars, is one of my favorite symphonic/melodic death metal songs of all time. It's epic, expansive, expressive, and abstruse.

Being a musician, I've never been a huge fan of metal, but the literary and philosophical influences present in those albums make the genre sound much more appealing.

Yeah, what most people would recognize as rock or metal is not what I usually listen to. There is a lot of negativity, anger, and so on in this genre, but I generally look for hidden gems that stray from the beaten path and incorporate philosophy, literature, nature, or other positive, constructive, and substantial things into their work.

Most of those albums also fuse symphonic/orchestral or otherwise melodic elements with the metal. That may seem asynchronous at first, but I've found both types of music to compliment each other wonderfully. The metal adds more power and substance to the sound, while the orchestral elements add more grace and beauty to the sound. This works very well in albums with fantastical or otherwise abstruse themes, as it can lend an otherworldly attribute to the sound.

It's certainly not for everyone, however. Metal is still metal, so it's very loud and very heavy.

If you're generally not into metal but want to give this sort of music a try, out of the albums I listed I'd recommend Imaginaerum by Nightwish the most. That's the lightest album and is more likely to appeal to a wider range of people. It explores a variety of themes ranging from the literary and the fantastical to the emotional and the psychological. Often, they comment on something involving real-life experience through allegory and metaphor.

Their music is easily among the most artful and thematic I have encountered thus far in the metal genre.
