If you were Sunset Shimmer, would you hate Twilight Sparkle?

She stole everything from you. Your life, your dreams... Even your name is just an inverse of hers.

She took your dream, your destiny, of being an alicorn. She stole Celestia's love from you; the mare who was technically your mentor, employer, and surrogate mother forgot about you for years. No one came looking for you; the entire world was wrapped in the pony who saved Equestria for the umpteenth time.

When you tried to take back the power that should've been yours at Canterlot High, she personally traveled to your world, foiled the plan you worked so hard to put together, and stopped you, with practically no effort. You're somewhat grateful she did, but now...

Time passes, and you realize that her friends have become your friends. You suppose it's all right... until she comes back to save the day once again, and you realize they love her more. They've always loved her more. You literally have nothing to yourself.

She offered you friendship, long ago, and you accepted, but now you're doubting yourself. She's been nothing but kind and courteous to you since the day she met you, perfection personified but you're still left with this nagging question: Should I hate Twilight Sparkle?

What do you tell yourself?

Its against my nature to hate someone who's more than me. Instead, i do everything and anything to become more than that person. So no, i wouldnt hate her.

Revenge isn't important to you? You wouldn't feel tempted to strike back at someone who's become everything you were meant to be?

revenge is important to me, but i utilise it in a way that is user friendly. Thus remaining twilights friend. For example, putting mlp in context, i would try even harder to win my friends hearts, to the point that i replace twilight for them. Instead of doing it negatively and try to bring twilight down. I dont hate peoole for being good at something no matter how much i want to. And I'm not just saying that, there is a kid who is a lot smarter than me, although I'm meant to be the smart guy. But i dont hate him, i like him, but try to be better than him. If that made any sense ^_^

Honestly, hating her would be pretty understandable. Twilight has everything that Sunset used to have, everything she dreamed about, and even more. Celestia's love, wings, even a group of loyal friends who'll always have your back. Of course what happened to Sunset was her own fault and Twilight had nothing to do with it at all, but I think it's very human to feel jealousy and hatred when you've been replaced. @#$#% even ripped off Sunset's name for pony's sake :okiedokielokie:

Not saying that it'd be right, but I could understand it completely. But Sunset now has the perspective to realize what all her scheming and selfishness brought her, and probably feels grateful to Twilight for offering her a path to redemption. I hope I'd feel the same way in her position.

Is it selfish to want the destiny that was rightfully supposed to be yours? Is it wrong to do anything you can to achieve that destiny?

there is no such thing as rightful destiny. You only recieve what you work for. And if someone beats you to it then too bad. Seto Kaiba said: "life's a game. If you can't win it, don't play"i know he's an anime character, but he's right.

Welp, she has nothing to blame on except for herself. If not for her impatience and disobedience, she would've been part of the royal family, even probably coinciding with Twilight, making 5 princesses in Equestria. Of course, you'll always go jealous if someone 'stole' what you wanted, but from a moral and reformed stand point, I'll just blame it onto myself since I was the one who destroyed my very dreams, and blaming it on someone is pretty much criminal in this case...

Yes, but in a different way.

When I watched the movie, I found it a bit unrealistic that Sunset Shimmer would be making fun of Twilight when she tried to become the new "popular girl." However, I would definitely feel resent towards Twilight if she stole from me what she stole from Sunset. Sunset was taking the "laugh her off cuz she's a nerd" approach, even when she had no idea who Twilight was. What would have been realistic in the movie, logical for Sunset, and what I would have done if I were her - was to harbor a deep and primal resentment for Twilight, and eventually just straight-up attack her. (Much like the final battle at the end of the movie.)

Not that I would ever hate Twilight, of course!  :P

He pretty much said it all for me.

Oh my gosh... she did.

Is it bad I never noticed that? Sunset Shimmer... Twilight Sparkle...

I feel dumb now. ^_^

I think Sunset Shimmer would just focus that hate at Princess Celestia herself since it was her that gave up on Sunset Shimmer in the first place and went on to replace her with Twilight Sparkle.

Celestia wasn't a completely good mentor/parent, when the going got tough she just lets the fear of Luna/Nightmare Moon come in and kicks Sunset to curb rather than trying anything other than commanding her to stop thinking selfish immature thoughts.

Then everything Sunset does in the movie is just a part of her lashing out because of her issues with Celestia.

It's likely (but unproven) that Celestia had several apprentices between Luna's banishment and Twilight's rise. We know of one for sure and that's Cadence. Sunset might have been one of several ponies to fail the test and a big part of the reason Twilight succeeded was the support of her friends, combined with her own efforts. Sunset, like Luna, or Trixie for that matter can think what they want, but the bottom line is they failed and deserved what they got.

The other thing is that a true reformation would imply that you no longer harbor negativity. MLP is big on reformation and second chances, but the fanbase loves antiheroes.

Celestia might have started to take apprentices after losing Luna to fill that void. So far, Celestia only takes one apprentice at a time as her schedule would only allow that.

Yes and it would appear that Cadence and Twilight are the only ones who made princess.

I wouldn't hate Twilight if I was Sunset, I would consider her my friend and someone to help me learn more about friendship when I have questions. I also don't know if Sunset would hate Celestia, I wish they could interact though, considering in the first movie, Celestia asks if Sunset is alright.

The main split between Twilight and Sunset Shimmer occurred because of fate.In the beginning, Twilight was no different than Shimmer, but she was forced into making friends due to Celestia's intervention, when she failed to do so for Shimmer. Even then, it took the end of the world to show Twilight friends are important. Shimmer didn't have that luxury.

edit: but you're right, Shimmer doesn't seem to resent Twilight. It's why I wanted to know if you would; it seems so unrealistic to me.

Sunset Shimmer having disdain towards Celestia her mentor is logical.

There are stories where the master kicks the student to the curb because the student took a path or thinks in a way that the master doesn't agree with. The master orders the disobedient student to stop and the master's pride sometimes stubborn, is what causes them to kick the student out where the student goes off to pursue their own way to get revenge, outdo their master, seek a new master, or to prove the master wrong.

Sunset Shimmer could have just as well stayed in Equestria, became an apprentice under a dark master. Then went on to Anakin Skywalker the Unicorn School of the Gifted in a non-killing way.

Of course, if Twilight knew more of Celestia and Sunset Shimmer back history. Twilight could have just locked Celestia and Sunset in the same room until they settled having the same result as the friendship magic blast.
