Vinyl Scratch' Role in MLP:EG RR

I thought it was pretty cool how she basically saved the day. Her car turning into a giant stereo system was epic.

Also I loved all the moments you saw her head bopping in the background.

I had noticed how she was never paying attention to the dazzlings cuz of her headphones, but I didn't expect them to do anything with her.

And when she opened the door for them I was like "No way!" and thought that was pretty awesome, and then she showed up with that tricked out car. I was pleasantly surprised, that was a pretty clever thing to do.

I liked how she was in the background just zoning out (you can even see her in the cafiteria head bangin' to her own music while the dazzlings are bewitching the rest of the students), and her car transformer was pretty neat, if extremely over the top and a large reminder that this is just a kids cartoon. But it was rather nice to see the encorperate some of the background material into the forground, even if she didn't get a sailor moon ripoff transformation.

I knew she'll play some role since I saw her not paying attention to the Dasslers in the teaser, but I've never expected it to basically save the day. It was neat that some background character played a big role. I might lead that some secondary, and even background characters might help our protagonist win in the future, since they mostly do all the work  :P

I have mixed feelings about it. Between the early posters, the junior novel prequel and the shorts--especially her getting her own--I was expecting her to play her biggest role ever. While that DID happen, I'm not very satisfied at how she was essentially a DEM...

:crawls out from under his bridge, to Troll:

Sigh...Vinyl..DJ Pon-3....why must you be such a flash in the pan for the purpose of the modern day "I R need me some Dubsteps!!".

Her soul purpose in the film, was to go "Hey teenagers! Do you like your Wubs! We know you do! look here she is, your wub-sona!!!!!!! But more head phones with her Cutie mark!!!"

I get it, i reaaaaaaaaaaaly do. I do understand the popularity of a background pony becoming hype. (cough Derpy).

But unlike say, Lyra/Bonbon hype from Rainbow Rocks (ie the mere whisper of a Lesbian couple, in a time and date of human society that gays are being "stream lined") Vinyl is JUST a marketing toy, unlike a "hey, we are cool with you loving other girls/boys if your a girl/boy" scheme that is a Lyra/bonbon cheek/sexy eye contact, moment.

Vinyl Scratch, IS COOL!

:clears throat:

She is!! Hell, i like her! That swagger, that ego, that pumped movement of "damn I am my own person, i can move this flank giiiiiiiiiiiiirl!"....omg i respect that! I soooooooooooo am down with any character, in...well..anything! That is all "I am my own persona, and i beat my own drum!".

The problem is, well, she isnt...

She IS, a modern market funded key to unlock the "dubstep wub loving modern gene to watch our ponies" tool.

"HEY KIDS! DO YOU LOVE DUBSTEP AND OVER SIZED HEAD PHONES...SO DO WE!"...here is a Pony for you to stitch onto your flat brimmed hats (ugh...) and swagger around in!

Vinyl is great, she has so much FAN potential...wait, what was that Gusty? Thats right, I said it I said FAN potential. Look at youtube, search for Vinyl scratch animations...go too fanfiction.org, search for Octy/Vinyl romance stories.....

The reality is, the FANS OF MY LITTLE PONY, has developed this character...NOT hasbro, or dhx. WE BUILT her, WE GAVE HER LIFE, past her marketing gymic of being a dubstep pony.

THIS-IS-WHAT-YOU-SEE-IN-HER! You see what WE gave her, not what THEY, gave her.

That being said, in the film, she IS her Marketing skin. Voiceless, shallow, empty and "look I R make dah wubs!".

You as a fan of her, you are seeing the "look its Octys girl!" or "oh snap Vinyl be working them wubby hips and hair yo!". But to the none fans all they see is a sell-face, for the -hype music today- gen.

I respect her...scratch that, I respect what the FANS have done for her. Given her a loving relationship with her polar oppisitie, and just like what we have done for Derpy, making her a Mother, a successful buisness mare and an icon for those who have challenge that CAN contribute too society, Vinyl IS MORE then what the petty marketing joes have "presented us".

TLDR, Vinyl in this film is..shallow and empty, she is not the Rav Mare that I picture coming home, half drunk/high, grinning from bass in her ears, silently sneaking into her bed room, cleaning up, and curling up with the epitome of high societys black maned beauty who turns to her lover in silent "humph..your late" and taken a blue haired punk into her lean arms and curling tight in love, trust and mutual love and respect for the true souls speech..ie music. This film WASTED Vinyl, it used her to sell toys, and thats just..wrong..

But hey, I am a Roleplayer, a Romantic, and frankly a lonely asshole who sees things his own way, what do I know? eh?!

Vinyl was AWESOME!!! B)

But about the fact she doesn't have a speaking role, I'm OK with it since she didn't really need to say anything and it might be a stupid theory but what if she literally can't talk it would be an interesting character trait for her

I guess I'm one of the few who didn't see it coming, but I thought it was a pleasant surprise that she played a fairly major rolw in the film. Granted it wasn't THAT big of a role, but it's importance is obvious.

So yeah, that ending song makes me wonder if she is sort of a member of the Rainbooms. :comeatus:

I'm pretty surprised how Vinyl Scratch went from a simple background pony to one of the protagonists of Rainbow Rocks. It always a pleasant surprise to see how many things affect both the show and the fandom.

It's very nice to see her, although I can see her getting a speaking role or her name being mentioned in the distant future. I'm kind of bummed that she was a bit of a Deus Ex Machina, though.

Yeah, I was very surprised and happy to see how Vinyl Scratch saved the day at the end, even that she's just a "background character" and she doesn't have any speaking roles in the movie so far. But I like how they played it. I like when all characters in the plot are being set up as pawns on the checkerboard only to play an important role together as the plot unwinds. Especially if it's not the great heroes who do that on their own, but that they get some help from other supporting characters, because it feels more relatable to me, and more "natural", when such things happen. I like the idea known from Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" that every creature, even the least expected or evil one, has some role to play in the whole story, and is important in its own way.

I'm with you on this one. It's sooo ironic that when fans use some works of Hasbro, they got C&Ds. But when Hasbro uses some of the fan ideas, it's all OK and no one is complaining or seeing anything bad in it. And there is a lot of stuff Hasbro exploited this way! The whole Equestria Girls is actually a fan idea, since I remember fan animations with human ponies being posted on YouTube or DeviantArt long before Hasbro even got the idea to make that movie. Hasbro also took over the equestriagirls.com domain for that sole purpose. There wouldn't be Derpy if not the fans who gave a personality to a mere animation error. Same with Octavia from the Gala string quartet. I really want to know how far could they go with this, since I saw the "Daring Don't" episode the premise of which was pretty much identical to the one I posted here on these forums long time before this episode was aired. (I post there more evidence of MLP:FiM episodes being "inspired" by previous works.) I wonder if my post could influence this episode somehow. I know that the writers are forbidden in their contracts to read any fanfics or to use fan ideas in their works, but do they hold up to that rule? Or is it there in their contracts only to cover Hasbro's asses in case they actually be inspired by some fan works? (You know, so that they could tell then "Our contracts say we couldn't do that so GTFO")

As to "EqG2:RR": Recently I was describing the plot of it to my friend, who know nothing about MLP and EqG, and he thought I am speaking about some different animated movie he once watched, with a very similar plot. I was surprised to hear that there was another cartoon with battle of the bands and some bad girs sucking out energy from people by their singing. Unfortunately he couldn't remember the title, but when I showed him screenshots from RR, he said that this is definitely not the movie he had on mind. So perhaps "EqG2:RR" is in a way a rip off too, who knows...

I watched the move and thought that vinyl was good. Her role was important and seems to keep the fans happy. One question however, how in the name of god can she afford to modify her car like that I mean wtf she's in high school no way in hell she could do that.

Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated did a vaguely similar plot. (Look up season 2, episode 18.)

ImogenOnScreen  That would be an interesting twist, a DJ who can't speak.  (DEFINITELY an improvement over some who do speak -constantly) However, I think DJs have to speak at least sometimes to announce commercials, if nothing else.

The late Asprin had a series of comedic SF novels, his PHULE series.  One of the characters had a great deal of trouble talking except over the radio, so she was made the company commo officer.  Sort of like Fluttershy being able to sing only when no one was watching

Also, I've read that ventriloquists tend to have the same thing & express their more aggressive thoughts through their puppets

I don't see what's so great about it. It's just some blatant fan service. If the recycled DJ asset the fans call Vinyl Scratch didn't become popular, more people would view her appearance as a Deus Ex Machina, which it most certainly was.

It's as if Meghan McCarthy hit a writers block, and eventually decided "Fuck it. Fan service will save the day."

FIM has its share of DEMs, but Vinyl's appearance ISN'T one of them. Early in the movie, she was seen bobbing her head to her own music and ignoring the Dazzlings' spell, thereby not being affected by it. That detail was small, but pivotal to the plot.

Vinyl's role makes perfect sense

Secondly, that's what Vinyl does, and it is a movie about music. There are other musician ponies like Octavia or Frederick, but they play classical music.

Plus, don't forget Vinyl is a very close friend to Pinkie, She DJs for Pinkie all the time (Canterlot Wedding, Wonderbolts Rap, etc.), I think she modifies her car with Pinkie too.

And yes, they are close friends even in Canterlot High:

Watch 1:33

Pinkie was kinda bored and then Vinyl showed up....

In my opinion I think Vinyl played an important role in Rainbow Rocks because of the 2 main things that she did
1) Getting the Mane 6 out.
2) Using the awesome car she has.
What do you guys think.

Vinyls role was pretty important. The mane 6 needed her to open the door under the stage and provide their music. She was very important for not even speaking one word.
