Sunset Shimmer and the Rainbooms? (Spoilers)

Why wasn't Sunset Shimmer invited to join the Rainbooms originally, when they first formed or any time before the end of the movie? This seems like a fairly significant question, and one that doesn't really seem to have been answered in the movie. Several times throughout Rainbow Rocks, we see Sunset Shimmer to the side looking awkward and/or disappointed when the band is practicing, or when they're talking about the band. Also, the Sirens try to use the fact that Sunset isn't in the Rainbooms to demoralize her and maybe cause more infighting between her and the Mane Six.

 

First, Rainbow Dash says it was her idea to start the Rainbooms so that they could be in the CHS musical showcase. Since the Mane Six hadn't been friends for a while before the events of the first movie, and since the CHS musical showcase (the first one ever) seems to be occurring some time after the fall formal, it seems reasonable that, at the time the Rainbooms were formed, the rest of the Mane Six were friends with Sunset Shimmer, or at least trying to become friends with her, per Twilight's suggestion at the end of the first movie. So then why didn't the rest of the Mane Six ask Sunset if she had any musical talent to contribute to the band, and ask her if she wanted to be in it?

 

Were Sunset and the rest of the Mane Six just not good enough friends at the time to make that kind of commitment? If so, then why not ask Sunset if she wants to join later, after their friendship is more solid and they see her just watching awkwardly when they practice? Would the addition of another member just be too much change for them to handle before the showcase?

 

Was it that the rest of the Mane Six thought they had a good enough band (and number/type of instruments) without Sunset Shimmer, and thought that she couldn't really add anything to the group, so they never asked? Could it be, perhaps coupled with this, that Sunset never told the rest of the Mane Six that she could sing and play guitar, and never asked to be in the group because she felt like it wasn't her place and was asking too much too soon?

 

When the Sirens are trying to demoralize Sunset Shimmer, they suggest that she isn't in the Rainbooms because she's still unpopular at school, and no one would want to see the Rainbooms if she were in the band. Is there any truth to that suggestion?

 

Finally, it seems that none of the Mane Six knew Sunset could play guitar until she told them (and demonstrated it) at the end of the movie, so that would presumably rule out any explanation of Rainbow Dash not wanting to share the spotlight with another guitarist, not wanting to sometimes have to give up playing lead guitar, etc.

 

Despite not knowing definitively why Sunset wasn't asked to join the Rainbooms sooner, it is gratifying, at least, to see Sunset playing and singing with the Rainbooms at the end of the movie, and I think the Rainbooms will be a lot cooler with two guitarists in their lineup.

It's because the human 5 are all jerks and don't deserve to live. How could they not let best human in the band? Unforgivable. :okiedokielokie:

Sunset did seem a bit shy in this movie, despite being friends with the humane 5/6. I'm assuming she was too nervous to ask and felt like it wasn't her place.

Megajack has my answer. Also, if you watch the shorts, Pinkie wasn't going to be in the Rainbooms either. It wasn't until someone (forgot who) decided Pinkie Pie needed to find an outlet for her energy and became the drummer. Rainbow was looking for someone else.

Good catch, I forgot about that short. I wouldn't necessarily say that Rainbow was looking for someone else to be the drummer in the sense that Rainbow saw Pinkie's drumming skills and judged them to be inadequate; rather, it seems more that Rainbow was just looking for someone to be the drummer and she was oblivious to Pinkie's natural fit and talent in that role. But it is plausible to think that if Rainbow was oblivious to Pinkie's musical talent, she could have been oblivious to Sunset's musical talent as well. And, although it's hard to say for sure, that short does raise the possibility that Rainbow would have been okay with Pinkie not being in the band, despite being in their close circle of friends, which would mean that Rainbow might also have been okay with Sunset not being in the band either.

Putting the obvious plot reasons aside, I'm sure everyone have had an experience where your friend/s doing something awesome and you're waiting for them to ask you to join, because you don't want to seem like a bother or get in the way, and they never ask you because they don't know that you're interested and they don't want to bother you. It happens, and like Sunset Shimmer said in the movie, she didn't want to speak up because she didn't feel like it was her place, being new at "the friendship" thing. During her night conversation with Twilight she basically screamed "I want to help so badly but no one is asking me" 

 

Also, the Rainbooms might've though Sunset Shimmer would be too uncomfortable in the spotlight, which was probably true at that point. Even if they would've asked, she could very well have turned it down

I didn't helped the years she spent being the alpha bitch until EG's end. It's pretty natural that the human5 were still a bit distrustful with her

I must admit, I did find it a bit of a shame that they only invited Sunset on the initiative of Twilight.
