How/why do the human Mane Six and Sunset Shimmer possess Equestrian magic?

A central point in Rainbow Rocks (and to some extent in Equestria Girls) is that the human Mane Six and Sunset Shimmer possess Equestrian magic, and no one else does. Throughout the movie, the Dazzlings are trying to feed off of the Mane Six's and Sunset's Equestrian magic so that they can restore their power. It's because the Mane Six and Sunset have Equestrian magic that the Sirens' singing doesn't affect them. And the apparent reason that the Mane Six and Sunset transform when playing in the band together is because the Equestrian magic inside them is expressing itself. So how/why do the human Mane Six and Sunset Shimmer possess Equestrian magic?

First, apparently Twilight and Sunset have Equestrian magic when they're in the human world, but why? Is it just because they came through the portal from Equestria originally? Did they draw their Equestrian magic from Twilight's crown, a.k.a. her Element of Harmony? Next, what about the rest of the human Mane Six? They possess Equestrian magic also, but how did that happen? Is it just that they have an extra-strong friendship? Is it because they're friends with Twilight, and she transferred some Equestrian magic to them, perhaps through her crown (a.k.a. Element of Harmony)? Does the fact that the human Mane Six are doppelgangers for the Mane Six in Equestria, who are the Elements of Harmony, have anything to do with it?

Related to this, why does the Equestrian magic within the human Mane Six (and later Sunset Shimmer) only express itself when they're playing music? Is it just because playing in the band is what brings them together as friends the most, and their inner magic is based on the strength of their friendship? Would doing some other intense friendship-building activity also cause their inner magic to express itself? I guess that in order to defeat the Sirens, whose magical strength comes from their music, the Mane Six (and Sunset) had to counter the Sirens with some kind of music magic themselves. But the Mane Six transformed when playing together even before the Sirens showed up at school and the Mane Six realized they had to use music magic to defeat them.

What do you think? Do you have an explanation of how the human Mane Six and Sunset came to possess Equestrian magic? Thanks for reading!

The human mane 6 and Sunset came to possess Equestria magic because of the magic from Twilight's crown. Since the mane 6 and Sunset drew magic from it, so they can still utelize some of that magic.

Hope this helps,

1. From the ending to EQG, Twilight mentions that her crown connected to the ones who helped create it (even being human forms of her pony friends)

2. Twilight in RR says that some of the magic is still lingering, even though the crown has now returned to Equestria.

3. Sunset Shimmer gains a hybrid form, and is immune to the Dazzlings' singing.

4. The Humane Five have hybrid forms and are immune to the Dazzlings' singing.

5. Twilight has a hybrid form and is immune to the Dazzlings' singing.

The crown is the common link between all of 3 to 5, further reinforced by 1 and 2. So they got the Equestrian magic via being connected to the crown.

6. Half way through RR, Adagio mentions that the sirens' "true power is being restored", even before they've "tapped into the strongest magic here."

So this implies that to an extend, there is a small part of Equestrian magic that lingered on ALL the students, not just the Humane Seven, or (less likely) was infused into the location itself. This makes sense since in EQG, all the students were controlled by Demon!Sunset while wearing the crown. It wasn't strong enough to protect them from the sirens' musical mind control, because they lacked the stronger bond of the Humane Seven. That there is such a bond is made clear when their unity was broken near the climax, allowed the sirens' to feed off their magic just as they had the magic in the other students. Luna and Celestia, who were absent during the climax of EQG, had the least (or no) contact with magic and no protection at all, and so were entirely controlled from the outset.

As for why it appears when they play, the magic originally came from an Element of Harmony, so it makes sense that it could be expressed via music, which also requires harmony. Stealth pun. Presumably, anything that harmonizes them sufficiently would also generate the effect. Rule of Cool takes care of the rest.

This is probably about as good an explanation as we're going to get. Still, there are at least a couple of times where Rainbow Dash starts transforming while none of the other band members are, and I'm not sure how those fit into this explanation. During those times when only Rainbow Dash is transforming, the rest of the band is either not playing together very well (while practicing in the barn) or they're annoyed and disengaged (while playing "Awesome As I Wanna Be" on stage); in either case, it would seem like the band is not being very "harmonious". Plus, when only Rainbow Dash is transforming, it's usually when she's playing a guitar solo or trying to stick out from the rest of the band, which, at least superficially, might not necessarily be considered "harmonious", either.

By the way, I'm not expecting you to try to reconcile your explanation with every event in the movie or anything. Any theory we come up with probably won't end up being completely satisfactory and consistent with the entire Equestria Girls canon, and it's not like the movie really offers any explanation (or anything more than brief acknowledgement) of why the Mane Six and Sunset Shimmer transform when playing in the band.
