World of Tanks

Historical arcade/simulation blend

World of Tanks is a team-based massively multiplayer online game dedicated to armored warfare in the mid-20th century. It is heavily dependent on team competence and methodical manoeuvres, as you have little room for error in battle. The game is free-to-play but as with all f2p games, there is a micro-currency in which you can get some neat bonuses such as a premium status, premium tanks and other benefits such as garage slots.
In the game as of now, there are four nations’ tech trees you can work your way down; USA, Germany, United Kingdom, China, USSR and France. There are also multiple specialized tracked vehicles that you can use to suit your preferred play style and tactics, such as light scouts, medium flankers, heavy brawlers, tank destroyers and self-propelled guns or artillery. Each type plays a specific role in combat, such as spotting enemy armour, sniping, flanking, brawling, harassment and artillery support.
WoT is going to be releasing version 8.0 in the near future which will be a great leap forwards for the game, introducing physics, improved graphics, and many other very, very fun things. The patch notes as of now can be found here, as they are currently running public test servers for finding bugs. I haven’t participated since I am both very lazy and willing to wait until the full release to “wow” me.
The game boasts an extremely impressive penetration system and is rather involved, as it counts for virtually every variable you would need to account for in reality such as muzzle velocity, calibre, armour thickness, range of shot, angle, and slope. Every major module inside of the tank can also be damaged or destroyed, these include the tracks, turret ring, gun, engine, fuel tank, ammunition rack, radio and optics. Not only are your modules vulnerable to enemy fire but you also must be wary of your crew inside your steel machine, such as the driver, radio operator, commander, gunner and loader. All can be injured and your combat effectiveness will be severely hampered if you lose a crew member in battle.

I’ve been playing this game on and off since April of 2011, and I can say that an affinity for military history or armoured warfare is a good thing to have when playing the game – as it really draws in those crowd’s attention. Such as myself.

As some people may have assumed, I specialize solely in the German Tech Tree and have a soft spot for accurate, sniping role tanks. Being able to plod about in all of the legendary panzers is something I love, especially when I’m able to spit steel at the enemy without a hitch~ Though, my favourite tank, in which I have over 500 battles in, the Panzer IV is going to be severely nerfed and have its roles changed in 8.0 from a wonderful sniper, to a mediocre flanker.

I've enjoyed this a fair bit, much to my surprise - I fully expected to try it once to appease NC, and to promptly move on with my life shortly afterwards. The truth is revealed.

I look forward to eventually grabbing something suited to general brawling, in addition to doing a bit of NC's cowardly long range snipery nonsense

I play tank destroyers beacuse they usually are the best and most powerful snipers, (depending on the country and tier) im a bit rusty at playing them beacuse i play as my IS-6 or Super pershing, and they have heavier armor, but all in all, TD's are what im proficiant at.

and this is my newest TD the M-10 wolverine, in the new skin i gave it.

the words on the front say "Your kidding, Your kidding Right?"

Artillery is best tanks. Just sayin.

I don't play WoT as often as Midnight Moon wants me to, but it's a pretty good game. I mainly prefer artillery. Nothing quite like the decadent charm of staying back and raining death from the heavens. >:3

Panzer IIs? Awesome! Time to roll those babies out and be hilariously outgunned by most of your contemporaries.

Since it's F2P, I may try this in the future when I have a little more free time.

Because of International Peace Day, Wargaming is generous enough to stimulate our war efforts by providing a very nice weekend sale!

"Tankers!

In observance of International Peace Day on September 21, we've created the Peace Weekend event. Check out the discounts and bonuses below!

- 50% off the credit price of: PzKpfw IV, M4 Sherman, KV-1 and AMX 12t

- Double credit income on: PzKpfw IV, M4 Sherman, KV-1 and AMX 12t

As you can imagine, there's an abnormal amount of Panzer IVs, Shermans, VK-1s and AMX-12ts on the battlefield, as everyone wasnts to get as much out of the credit boost as humanly possible.

As evident from this screenshot:

In this game there are 10 Panzer IVs, 3 KV-1s and 1 Sherman.

Also, if you're ever being supported by Electrobolt in his SPG, ensure you are at least 20 metres away from his target...

Meh, I'll give this game a shot. Maybe WoT will be similar to Exteel in both gameplay and awesomeness (who am I kidding, nothing will be as awesome as Exteel anymore ;_; ).

Here's a quote from a certain WoT player:

I like to play artillery because I love to sucker punch people in bar-fights.

i almost got into a battle with a Maus the other day in my IS-6, sadly, my computer froze when it was just around the corner, IT FROZE

Good thing your computer showed you mercy, because the Maus wouldn't have.

Yes, in lower-tier matches it's quite entertaining to watch a Panzer II attempt to take on French armour. Glad you're considering it!

Meh, I'll give this game a shot.

Excellent. This is all going as planned. We need more boots to support the war effort!

Recently, because of @Zoop, and @Electrobolt I've been playing a lot of lower tiers, namely my Pzkpfw 38(t). Oh my goodness I've forgotten how effective this riveted Czech tank is!~

I had always discounted this game for being like a standard fps with tanks. (I was told that's what it was) however this (saying it's historically realistic) thread has inspired me to give this game a shot. It looks like fun.

Honestly, I had the same misconception before playing it and as such never once took a look at it despite the large number of people around me that had started to play it. It wasn't until NC managed to pounce on me during a particularly vulnerable moment that I was finally convinced to give it a try. I'm glad I did.

Whereas your standard FPS relies primarily on twitch gameplay (which isn't a bad thing - I rather like it at times), WoT is much slower paced, and quite a bit more methodological. It's less about rushing in for the kill, and more about staying under cover and giving careful consideration to your positioning, and making every shot available to you count.

TL;DR: it ain't no TF2.

This is pretty fun (I just got owned) but still I'm now playing as Unfoundedfall. Which nation would y'all recommend to place as for a beginner? (Or are they all pretty much even?)

Each side has its strengths and weaknesses, german tanks are good snipers, russians are good brawlers, americans i think are a good combonation of the two, and i dont know the french positive.

I play american and russian tanks (mostly tank destroyers), and one german, seeing as i want my panther, but im trying to get my T-34/85 (the only russian medium tank i really want)

So it sounds like it takes a bit of a Red Orchestra 2 approach to tanks, but the core of the gameplay focuses on tanks rather than infantry. There's obviously a bit more complexity to it than in RO2, but the reliance on a full crew is from where I'm drawing the comparison.

Sounds like something I need to look into. I'll download it tonight. You'll probably find me playing under the name of BronyArtemis if it's not taken.

Eh, I think some people are taking pride in their accomplishments more than comparing themselves to others, or maybe trying to feel less guilty for all the time they've dumped into a game by having measurable results.

Stats in RO2 mean nothing. No matter how good you are at that game, you're sure to die almost as often as you get killed.

So out of curiosity how did you get your tanks those skins? Also do you tank crew increase their skills as you get vetter or do you have to pay for them to get better?

First question: you mean the MLP skins? You get them by modifying the game's files, replacing the default tank skins with custom drawn ones. Not for the faint of heart, and you can break your game if you don't know what you're doing. Luckily, there's plenty of threads on the World of Tanks forums that talk more about it.

Second question: both. Your crew's experience increases slowly as you play matches, but you can spend monies to accelerate their training.

Or something like that.

Yes, 8.0 is LIVE and rolling!

Despite WG depriving me of my one true love, the Panzer IV, I am still managing to do fairly well with it! Played about six games with it or so and I scored 5 kills in two of those games. The Ausf. H turret and skirts along the turret really make up for the losses, I loooove the aesthetics~

The new sounds are lovely, the graphics are lovely, the physics are lovely, the interface is lovely, the customization is lovely. I haven't come across something I do not particularly enjoy. Though, if I had to choose, I'd say the change from a vertical to horizontal tech tree do agitate me a bit. Alas, I'll get used to it.

Just came back from another round in my beloved Panzer 38(t) and did very well for its first 8.0 round, gaining myself a Top gun commendation. I'll take this opportunity to show off the new after-action reports, which I adore.

I just installed this a few days ago and let it grab the latest update, but I've yet to be able to play it because my video driver keeps stalling and the game semi-crashes.

edit: Alright, I think the problem is manageable. It's now obvious that I can't have anti-aliasing enabled in-game or directly through CCC. I can't run it full-screen either and I have to drop post-processing and textures to High, otherwise my GPU runs full-bore and overheats. Even with the fan manually turned up to 75%, it was approaching 80 degrees with all of those things enabled. Since dropping some of the settings I can lower my fan speed to 55% and my temperature hovers around 70 degrees. According to many forum posts I found while researching this problem there are a lot of others experiencing the same, but the exact problem and solution seems to vary from one person to the next.

I go by BronyArtemis, so add me if you want to and hit me up. I've yet to actually play.
