Derpy's Eyes

  1. 1. So Derpy's eyes are...

    • an "animation error"
      19
    • the result of an animator joking around

I'm surprised no one made a poll for this.

So do you think Derpy's eyes are really an "animation error" or was one of the animators just messing around?

Things to consider:

  • She was in the first episode- which was long done BEFORE the show ever aired and before any bronies.
  • Background/crowd ponies are pretty much just "copy, paste, and recolor" which makes me even more suspicious of the "animation error" excuse. The computer isn't going to randomly paste an eye inverted. (I've worked with flash before)

I know that If I was an animator I would try to sneak goofy stuff in the background once and a while. :umad:

So what do you guys think? :derp:

It was all pure coincidence by Lauren herself. To create an army of pony-loving people, and then sooner take over the world.

LOL, although I think at the time she was having a hard enough time trying to keep control of her own mind/sanity, with the 2x normal production speed of the show while running it from over a thousand miles away.

Well, it was kind of both, the animators thought it would be funny to add her, but never intended to actually show her, but at somepony someone had moved some background ponies aaaaand....there was derpy

OK that makes sense. Someone originally made her by messing around and forgot the puppet was in an actual scene. Stuff got moved around and in the scene, and no one caught that Derpy was in view before the final render of the episode.

I just didn't buy the idea that someone could be working on an eye (which are pretty dynamic in FIM) and NOT notice that it's upside down (aka that Derpy literally was a result of someones "Derp") :muffins:

Echoing @@RainbowMau and @@Blobulle. The staff already stated that Derpy's eyes in the pilot were an animation error. Derpy was supposed to be facing the other direction in the background. But the people responsible for the background ponies made a mistake. 4chan caught it. People developed her excellent character after that, and the rest is history.

Yeah, it's really not that complicated.

If you look closely there are quite a lot of bizarre and seemingly obvious blink-and-you'll-miss-them errors that are harder to notice and don't get attention drawn to them because they don't happen to look funny or make sense in any way. Like when a wing isn't quite attached in the right place, or a cutie mark shows up on an inside thigh.

Any error that happened to look like a character quirk rather than just a slightly misplaced graphic was bound to get attention. It doesn't take any more explanation than that.

It's an animation error. DHX has confirmed this, so I would leave it there rather than assume that the animators were having fun.

It's quite interesting to see such a simple mistake could result in a deep and loveable mascot of the MLP:FiM fandom, isn't it?

What's wrong with that? It's sweet that the fandom had such a big role in building Derpy Hooves as a character. Why does every minute detail have to indicate some conscious intention on the part of the creators? Part of the fun of the new media age is that we get these kinds of participatory textualities that can be informed by the audience's reading of the material as much as the creator's production of it. I think Derpy being an ascended accident happens to be a lot more interesting than if she had been created that way on purpose.

Some of the best moments in film history were accidents.  Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jones was supposed to fight the guy with the sword, but Harrison was fooling around & shot the guy.  It was funny enough they kept it.

Or in Young Frankenstein, the 1st time Feldman's hump moved, it was an accident.  That's why Wilder asks "Didn't your hump used to be on the other side?" & Feldman shrugged.  It was funny enough they kept it as a running gag.

Some movie had Burt Reynolds as a bootlegger, they are on a boat & he tries to throw a Molotov cocktail & drops it.  They just kept it

I could go on, but you get the point.  I believe Derpy was an accident, but they were smart enough to keep it

Animation error. These errors are easy to make in Flash, and you see silly ones like these all the time, from Alicorn Rarity to Cyclops Pony.

Derpy was cool because it was such a subtle goof that it helped the fandom create a persona around her which the staff embraced. If it was a more outlandish error (like the Cyclops in Best Night Ever) it would have never allowed a collaborative identity to be formed.

I know the whole "it was an animation error" is a popular piece of trivia everyone holds as true, but I dunno, it seemed like it was at least somewhat intentional on someone's part. I get how the eyes could be the result of an animation error, but where did the goofy mouth come from?

derpy_hooves_first_appearance_by_seekera

That can't possibly be an animation error. Someone consciously gave the character that goofy mouth as a compliment to the eyes. Maybe they meant that the eyes were a genuine error, and they had the chance to fix it but decided to run with it as a background gag instead?
