Religion in MLP

Lucky Star

in the episode "hearts and hooves day" we saw Sweetie Belle interrupting a funeral in progress.

but what is this Too-Old-colt reading from?

an ancient religious text? this book could be filled with all the secrets behind Alicorn's, their origin and their purpose and tons of pony mythology!  :squee: omc omc omc!

Going to assume it's probably the standard "We gather here today to mourn the loss of ___" book where people honor the deceased and talk about their experiences with the pony who died. Just something to read aloud at a funeral so you actually have something to say. Could be a religious book, could also not be, you just never know really.

@, you make a good point but I think they could do that stuff with out reading out of a book, but for all we know it could be a book of poems that the deceased happened to like.

oh well.

I would say so. A setting completely absent from any kind of religious ceremony or thinking would look like this:

NeutralPlanetEmbassy.jpg

Sans flag, possibly window.

The ponies have name dropped Celestia in the vein of a deity and given Her immortality and central presence in their society, viewing Her as such wouldn't be unreasonable.

This funeral shows that the ponies have some procedure of how to intern and mourn their dead. Maybe even some evidence of their belief in an afterlife. I mean, they've name dropped both ghosts and zombies before, so the concept of endurance beyond death is also something they clearly ponder.

perhaps, though a single nod to it would hardly establish it. The only other thing I can think of that would be considered similar would be how celestia and luna are almost thought of as gods, but aside from that I haven't seen much on how the world was made.

Even secular weddings and funerals feature officials reading from some sort of text, often, so it's hard to go by just one photo from the show (even if the pony in question is wearing a priest's collar).

They haven't shown much evidence of religion in MLP, which suits me fine. and even though ponies have seemed to use Celestia's name in pace of the deity or messiah or prophet of choice, I get the distinct impression that Celestia herself would not encourage such a practice.

AWESOME!

Though I'm pretty sure Christ has already come and gone from Equestria. His name was Starswirl the Bearded, he who sacrificed himself from the comfort of friendship and the immortality that comes with it to be a protector and savior. (Joking when I say this.)

Likely because she's just humble like that. Doesn't change the fact that the ponies worship her for the true reasons most people do worship their personal deities (and fundamentalists should), not for her power, but for her love.

It would be pretty interesting to have an episode dedicated to Starswirl actually, but I guess he's more of a incognito pony which we aren't supposed to know much about.

I think Celestia would be fine with being loved as the benevolent ruler that she is, but she herself would know darn well that she wasn't a true god and I don't think she'd want any other pony deluding themselves into thinking she was, humility or not. She values truth and honesty and the truth is, she's not a god.

I tried really hard to make a horse pun Jesus joke and all I could come up with is: Pony Jesus gallops on water.

Meh, we've already seen Twilight do that, so it's not really a miraculous feat.

Really Jesus jokes work best when you put someone in His place for situational humor. Something like . . . .

"Render unto Sombra, that which is Sombra's. Celestia's is the kingdom of the warm sun."

or

"Yeah I just launched into a Sonic Rainboom from my bed."  B)

"We'll call you if Lazarus drops dead."  >_>

Meh, that gets into "what is a god?" I think a smarter way to put it would Celestia not saying one way or the other.

me no likey O-O I think I like Equestria with no religion now.

Ouch? What's wrong with a little humor directed at such a figure? I'm sure He Himself wouldn't mind.

And what's wrong with envisioning that some ponies may have thoughts about the grand scheme of their universe?

Who said anything about Christianity? You said "Equestria with no religion."

I said, "some ponies may have thoughts about the grand scheme of their universe."

Christianity =/= Religion

I did see that. I saw how it made you distinctly uncomfortable. Then you said religion should be absent from Equestria. Ergo you group Christianity in with ALL religion, on at least a surface level.

Am I wrong when I say this?

yes, some ponies may have thoughts like that. anyone would.

Then, at least in some form, religious thought would exist there.

 haha no, I don't group Christianity with all religions, as a wiccan I am quit aware that there are others.

I guess I didn't want humor the idea of the ponies being Christians, even the possibility.

:maud: so yeah, you were wrong to say that.

if there is religion there, I want it to be Celestia and luna based.... call me picky, I don't really mind.

No, I won't call you picky because that's what I believe they do. It wouldn't make sense for any of the ponies to be Christians simply because it's not Earth and therefore Jesus Christ was never born there.

I won't pry any further, but I do admit it does sadden me you are so hostile to my faith when I have no problem with yours.  :(

I'm sorry to have offended you, I've simply had too many bad experiences with people of your "faith".

and I've read to many news reports of violence from people of your faith as well. I've also read too much of the bible to approve of it.

it's your life, do with it what you will. free country. -_-

Well I'm glad this came to a peaceful resolve, suppose that's just the community for you as I doubt this would have happened anywhere else XD
