Why did Microsoft pay 2 billion dollars for minecraft?

Apparently Notch said that when he was selling Minecraft. ''It's not about the money, it's about my sanity''. So then, if it was not about money then shouldn't Microsoft pay $1 instead? If not then why did they pay $2 Billion? What will Notch do with his money? I am not that worried because Microsoft may be hated by the Minecraft community if they do something wrong. They will probably just capitalize on Merchandise and Xbox DLC. They said ''they want to expand it's console reach''. Meaning it will still be on Sony consoles. The main point here is, why did Microsoft pay $2 billion instead of $1?

P.S: Is Notch a Traitor? I don't think he is.

Since I played minecraft for a LONG TIME I'll explain.

Notch created minecraft, but he left, some people said because he got enough money. Then Jeb and Dinnerbone worked on minecraft after Notch quitted. Notch is NOT a traitor.

Microsoft want more products to be sold. Minecraft is one of the popular games out there. So owning it might give them more money. Microsoft also bought tomb raider not only minecraft.

And think logically

If you buy someone's game for $1, will that make sense?

Yes but Ross Brawn bought Honda F1 for £1. And so did Roman Abramovich with Chelsea. I Guess Big money means more important.

Just because others bought that one for $1 that doesn't mean this company needs to buy other game for $1 right? :#

Not a huge gamer but from what you've posted, i see it this way. Microsoft are developers, arguably they have a couple best in their payroll. Notch is a developer who slaved over Minecraft. From one developer to another, they both agreed that a game like Minecraft is worth $2 billion.

Even in my Systems Analysis and Design class, it talks about how developers charge for their work per module. I can't even imagine how many modules of code Minecraft is comprised of :/

One thing. What is with Microsoft's sudden attitude with other consoles? ''Expand our audience''. A Few months ago Microsoft said that ''We don't like cross platform play'' which made the developer of Final Fantasy XIV worried. Good thing is though, Minecon will be bigger with Mr.Gates funding and apparently it's going to be in London next year. I want it to be at the NEC!!!
