music How rap and hip hop has changed...

You know what I've noticed?
Rap and Hip Hop have both changed dramatically ever since the genres came out.
And I'm not particularlly a fan of the mew stuff.

Remember when Rap and Hip Hop used to be about rollin' through the hood and gangbanging?

Remember that?
That in my opinion was GOOD rap.
Now all it's about is big butts and sexualization.
Anyone else feel this way?

Is this supposed to be news? lmao

Of course it's changed, every genre of music changes. Look at Disco when it first began, it was classical instruments with an electric guitar for the bass. Then when you got to early 80s it started to use synthesizers for almost every instrument (except the drums).

What about Pop. Started with regular instruments, (The Beatles is an example of an early Pop group not using electric instruments). Then in the 80s synthesizers became slightly more advanced and they took over.

I'm not going to try to change your opinion because you are obviously dead set in how you feel about Hip Hop and I'm tired of hearing about how much "Hip Hop has degraded". All I can say is if you want to hear good new music, stop listening to the radio (for the most part) and look for things.

One of the things I really dig about Hip Hop is that it has evolved to a point where anyone can be a part of it. You can rap about anything. There are more topics in life than just gangbanging, money, and drugs and there are several artists that acknowledge that. If you like listening to songs about those topics, that's fine, but don't sit and complain about not hearing what you want to hear if you aren't looking for it.

Or just feel free to live in your time capsule. I really don't care.

Hip hop has obviously changed grown, evolved, (and in my opinion devolved) since its inception. There have obviously been game changing releases. Albums like Paid in Full, Straight Outta Compton, Illmatic, Ready to Die, Marshall Mathers LP, have helped push the genre in many different directions and have helped make the genera as expansive as it is. My issue today is that hip hop today seems to have a lot less people who focus on lyricism and being actually interesting then just making money. People like Kendrick, Big Krit, and Lupe help keep my faith in the art form today though. I do love though is how hip hop can reach out and feel relatable to so many people. Hip hop to me has always been about people who have been in the struggle, emotionally, financially and just in many parts of life having extreme difficulties in one form or another. Which makes the music so relatable to me. So yea, the music has changed, but and while I feel it has fallen off some, there are still many great artists today who continue to make me enjoy and appreciate hip hop in new different ways.

Well I do like the Rap "Lifestyle" by Young Thug.

It isn't gangsta rap, but I still like the flow and the Hip Hop beats.
Plus I like the story he tells on how he had to go through a ton of rough times to get to the rich lifestyle he has.

Now I don't have a problem with modern day rap in general.
It just seems to me like gangsta rap is dead.
And it seems it's been replaced with other raps that are over-sexualized.
Sure rap has always been a bit sexualized, but it just seems like that's what all the popular raps and hip hops are now a days.
Over-sexualized garbage.
I'll give you some examples.
Drop girl and Wiggle.
Both very catch raps, but they're about the same frikn' thing.
Women shaking their asses.
Sure gangster gangsta rap is all about gangbanging, but that's why it's called "gangsta rap".
I say we take all the raps and hip hops that are completely sexualized and label them as one genre of "sexualized rap".

Yep.
I love my time capsule and I'm not coming out.

There's a multitude of good modern/current original hip-hop out there, you just have to look for it. Sad to say it, but long gone are the days of Dr.Dre, Ice Cube, Nas, Tupac, Biggie, Eazy-E, 50 Cent, Big L etc, etc. Now it's a LOT more underground if you want to find some rappers who don't whore themselves out to the mainstream, even though I don't really have a problem with playing a Drake or Lil Wayne song at a party, because, granted, they have made some decent songs and the majority of the songs they currently make are, in fact, songs that you can play at a party. You can't really play an oldschool rap song at a party, if only a small percentage of those who attend actually know what song it is.  :P

On the top of my head, I can name of my all time fav. current original & underground rap groups who are still active to this day.

La Coka Nostra.

Others include Immortal Technique, Snowgoons, Jedi Mind Tricks, Vinnie Paz, Ill Bill, Slaine, Celph Titled etc.

Gangsta rap isn't dead, not by a longshot. Seems like you're looking at the pop-influenced type of rap, which you describe as being all about sex. In my opinion, that's a sub-genre of pop.

But there are plenty of newer rappers who do good gangsta rap:

Kendrick Lamar

Ab-Soul

Schoolboy Q

Jay Rock

Earl Sweatshirt

And as for rappers who have made gangsta rap for a while, and still do:

Dj Quik (this guy is awesome, and not very famous, because he prefers to stay in the hood not sell himself to the industry.)

Snoop Dogg

Ice Cube

Xzibit

Eminem

And the list goes on, a long way. So I wouldn't say it's dead, but rather that you look in the wrong places.

@,

Don't forget the "joke" rappers who do it for the lulz, even though their music is addicting, lol. xD

Yung Lean!

They're coming to Copenhagen in 2015. *fangirl scream*  :yay:

Rap and Hip Hop hasn't changed, the people listening to it have changed. I personally listen to music with great vocals and lyrics in them. But what I noticed, is that a lot of people listen to to fucking Anaconda, which is all about sex and big buts

But I don't think you should be mad at the music business, but at the people listening to it. If nobody would listen to that ''music'' then that music wouldn't excist.

But if people want to listen to that, let them. It's becoming a problem when people are saying that these works are good. My sister tries to tell me that Anaconda is great music, while the music I listen to (Eminem, Voltaire) is crap. People are seriously becoming less good at recognising good music.

And don't give me that ''It's subjective'' crap, because it isn't. There are clear criteria at how you can see if the music is good yes or no.

But Eminem has released a new album: Shady XV, with all kinds of good rap music. If you like old school rap, then give this a go

Alright, this is a worthwhile discussion to have. I'm always a fan on comparing different era's of music and find that it can lead to very substantive discussion.

That said, YouTube videos still apply under the Excessive Language Rule. They still apply under the Abusive Rule. They still apply under the NSFW rule. Same with Sound Cloud. In all fairness we just removed them and will let it be, as it is easy to forget exactly what is said and shown in a video.

Going forward, don't post a hip-hop or rap song that will violate the Global Rules.

I was there for the 80's and early 90's explosion. I prefer those songs from that era.

Dre and NWA!
