Should Fo:E Be Turned into an Audio Book?

Hi all,

So like the title sort of implies. Do you think the story/fiction Fallout: Equestria should be turned into an audio book version? I'm not talking about taking it an adapting it or changing it, just simply getting a huge cast and production team together to voice all of the characters that show up throughout the book.

The reason why I ask this is because I am thinking about doing such a project. As a matter of fact I am in the process of looking into doing something like that, however I am greatly concerned and worried that it will get a less then stellar reception. Not to mention the fact that I would need a lot of people working with me in order to just help get the basics and ground work laid out before a whole lot of progress could be made.

So what do you think? Would you be willing to give it a chance if the quality was good? Does this even sound like something worth pursuing?

If anyone would be interested in this project or wanted to get involved please let me know and I will be more then happy to talk to you about it. Again this is in the concept stage, and I would really like to know if anyone would like to see something like that happen.

Have a great day and I cannot wait to see what you think. To steal a quote from CannedCream, "Stay pony my friends!"

Yes, I'd love to see Fallout: Equestria be turned into an audio book. For me reading FO:E is a little overwhelming because of the amount of text, but things are a little easier when a fanfic of some sorts is turned into an audio book. I actually remember finding a lovely audio book on Youtube featuring Nowacking as Little Pip, but they only made about 3 episodes. If you're concerned with the reception, then I guess you should tell some of the more well known voice actors of this fandom and see if they'll approve.

I won't be joining, but I'll certainly support this idea. Good luck. :P

I'm pretty sure there's already something like this underway, but i don't mean to discourage you or anything.

FO:E is, with no doubt the best fanfic iv'e read, ever. I know i'd totally like it if there was an audiobook adaption of it.

There are two that I can think of, however if I remember correctly one group/project is turning the book into a radio based/type series, the other was one person who did all of the voices. When I listened radio project I enjoyed it, however it sort of requires you to have read the book in order to understand what's actually happening. Agian, that was how it was for me. A great example was *SPOILER* when the two female riaders had killed the slavers who had Littlepip and Monterey Jack. One of the raiders gave Littlepip a good smack down. The issue I had was that there was a lot of sound but there wasn't an understanding of the extent of beat down. If I hadn't read the book I might have wondered how the heck Pip was able to get back up and kick the shotgun away.

That's my only thing, radio plays have a very limited ability at times and rely heavily on sound to help convey what's happening. Sadly the art of radio drama basically/almost died. A very good radio series was Boston Blackie and The Lone Ranger. The way they infused what was going on in fight scenes with the use of sounds helped the listener know what was happening. For example, Bang boom pow, "Now now you should know better then to hit a guy who pretends to be knocked down only to land two knock out blows to the face." Or whump "That crack to the head should keep him out long enough for the cops to find him at the scene of the crime." See that gives helpful information as well as a little insight as to what the heck just happened and not a bunch of sounds and no clue what just happened.

I tend to over think things and sometimes it's hard to shake a preconcieved notion. I do wish them the absolute best of luck and I want to see what they come up with next. The goal for this project would be to get the best of both worlds. virtually word for reading with some added sound effects at certain points. I wouldn't try to make sound effect for every single thing that goes on, and the scenes where their is a gun battle raging will need some additional considerations. Like I said it's still in the concept phase and it's only me coming up with things and I haven't had the fortune to have other people give me feedback on it.

By the way thanks for the support!

In any case, if you truly have what it takes to assemble a cast willing to perform, and actually do this thing, i'd be interested in seeing how your project turns out. I'd offer to help out, but i wouldn't know how.

I wish you the best of luck with your efforts.

I am currently working on getting people assembled, that's a work in progress. Are you a good typer and analyzer? Do you like writing invites or scripts? If any of that falls within your talent or you want to take a stab at it please let me know. You can PM or reply on this forum here. At this point and time I am doing everything myself which is a tad bit overwhelming considering how much work is required.

I would suggest if you are looking for folks to work this project, that you post a thread in the creative resources folder. That's where you'll find a lot of the VA's hang out, myself included. There's also a voice actor's guild in that folder, but you might have to dig for it. Make sure you bring a shopping list for characters and explain your project in your thread. It's a lot easier to get folks when they know what you're looking for. If you don't already have Skype, get it. It is invaluable because most of the creatives and VAs use it.

I haven't read the series, but I'm usually up for a VA role.

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!!

Well that's the cool thing, I wouldn't want/need money. I just need people to help. Spreading the word, helping with ideas, voicing and even some admin stuff. I have a lot to do and I wanted to begin the process or recruiting and team building starting Jan 1st 2015. The goal would be to begin production in June of 2015.

Yes. That sounds like a brilliant idea. I would love to see that.

We need all of the help that we can get, but with a strong and dedicated team that will see it through.

You say audio book and then say the opposite of audio book. :wat:

This would be like a podcast or radio show. An audio book is what you are saying you DON'T want it to be, which is someone reading it with no effects or sounds added. I think you're confused. I would know what you want before you start.

Oh, also, my answer is no.

1.) Copyright issues with both using Hasbro and Bethesda or whoever the hell makes Fallout material, even if you take not claim that it is yours/you aren't making any cash on it.

2.) You should ask the writers permission, too.

3.) I found FO:E personally dull, overly long, and poorly written. So I also personally would just say no.

Let me see if I can explain what I am talking about. I would like to say I am sorry if I am seeming to confuse the issue of audio book/radio show. I have had the pleasure of listening to many different books on tape/cd, my favorite would be Hank the Cow Dog. The writer actually takes the time to voice each and every character, adds music to the songs that he sings in the book at at times adds in sound. That's the kind of audio book I have in mind. I wouldn't call it a radio series type thing only because the sounds would compliment the words being read along with the sound(s). Hopefully that clears things up a tad bit.

I respect your opinion(s) completely, Fallout: Equestria is not for everyone and it has it's quirks and dull moments I will grant you. As far as copy right issues, I would have a hard time believing that they would waste their energy and efforts on a fictional story that would be really stretching it to make any claims. Of course, I am by no means an expert and I will not even remotely claim to know anything on this subject, me personally, I find it hard to believe that they would target something so small.

I have sent out a message to the writer of the story and I have yet to hear back from them. I actually sent the writer a message a while ago, which was before I even started to do anything on this project. I am moving forward with the hope that the writer would grant me permission to do this project, however if the writer(Kkat) declines then I will simply walk away.

What about the story was dull? I will admit chapters 37 and 38 were extremely long and bogged me down quite a bit, but I felt overall it kept me guessing and wanting more.

Hope you have a great day and I thank you for your post.

@@Littlepip3000,

You know, I too wish I could have a physical copy. Heck I even looked on ebay, half price books and just about anywhere that might have a physical copy for sale. Nada, nothing, zip zilch. Maybe if the demand increases enough they might do a third round of printing. Audio books are pretty good so long as the production isn't lack luster and subpar, I have listen to many high quality production audio books and sometimes they do a better job of bringing the book to life then reading them yourself. But to each their own likes and enjoyments.

Have a great day!

On a side note, is anyone out there looking for something to be a part of? If so then I think I have the perfect solution. You could join me and be a staff member who will help play a vital part in making FO:E Audio project come to life. There's a lot to do and I could use all of the help I can get in order to make this as wonderful and successful as possible!

Oh and Merry Christmas everyone/pony!

Thanks, I am not familiar with who SCS is. Hopefully you could tell me and explain why SCS would make a great narrator, I am always looking for good voice talent as well as staff members.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hey everyone!! Terribly sorry that I haven't replied or updated you wonderful people as to what's going on with the project. The holidays slammed me and then the project went supernova and I've been struggling to keep up with the sudden and immense explosion. I created a facebook page called Fall Out: Equestria Audio Project and it has gotten so many people interested that they were wanting to get involved. I am amazed at the level and number of people who are willing to help and wanting to be a part of this project. I have been on a mad scramble to gather together audition lines, make videos and try and respond to all of the people who want to try out for a role. If you want to check out the youtube channel please look for FOE Audio. There's an audition video up right now as well as a video talking about who we are, please spread the word and tryout for the roles that we are currently looking for.

Thanks for your support and I look forward to hearing from you!
