I found out about Windows XP mode but I'm not sure about it.  Does it work for old games that work on Windows XP like Fallout 3? I can launch it on Windows 7 for me but it still crashes on occasion.

yes right click say your fallout 3 an there is an option for "compatibility mode"  that should fix most problems. or you don't have enough ram or Processor power

Do you have the recommended or minimal stats to run Fallout 3? I would personally like to have more than the recommended stats before running it in XP mode because I think it still runs your Windows 7 in the background and to have some wiggle room but then again it has been a while since I used it and I usually like to be over prepared.

No XP mode will not work (well) with 99% of games, it is like that because Microsoft Virtual PC has no Acceleration.

You would be better off with VMware or Virtualbox to run it.
