Why does Sunset Shimmer go to the human world in the first place?

Why does abandoning her studies and pursuing her own path lead her to go to the Equestria Girls universe?  What benefit does she have of going there?  The movie seems to imply she went herself on her own accord and was not banished to there or anything like that.

I forgot the plot noo!

Sunset didn't get what she desired, she turned cruel, and eventually she abandoned her studies to pursue her own path. And she went to the human world.

Maybe she didn't know what was on the other side of the portal when she initially went through. Then when she did discover what the world was like, stuck around too long to get back out. then when EQ happened, she finally was able to get back.

Well, Celestia did say that she was her student not long before Twilight.  30 moons is about 30 months or 2 and a half years.  I could see her going through and then getting stuck and having to wait that whole time before she could even try to get back.  And what about the vibrating cell phone book?  I don't buy that she was just exploring.

EDIT

Okay, I watched the scene with the introduction of the special book.  She says Celestia gave her the book while she was still a student so what I thinking doesn't make sense.

The portal was initially something Celestia kept hidden. So going through the portal would have been Ina way defying her teacher. And if you wanted to defy your teacher, would you message her back saying, hey look, I went through this portal you kept hidden away, forgive me?

In a case like this I'll fully recommend the IDW comic "MLP Annual 2013" that really goes into detail on Sunset Shimmer's background, why she did what she did, and a short look at her before she left on her own accord.

But yeah, she pretty much had an attitude problem and after sneaking into the library to do some Celestia said NOT to do (IIRC), she was thrown out of the castle. She snuck back in, used the mirror, and the rest of the comic details something else which I won't spoil. ;)

Well there is a possible arc... if u take the comics as cannon.... Look for "The Fall of Sunset SHimmer". It gives you pretty much a story arc...

She is a kinda Twilight, prefering study over friends but a bit more arrogant, believing she will eventually become "the best". Celestia talks to her and brings her to a mirror (the portal mirror) and asks her what she sees. She answers she see a herself as an alicorn that will eventually become powerful. Celestia then closes the subject and Sunny continues asking about "what is that mirror" but Celestia keeps ignoring her on the matter. She eventually starts studying old books and doing her own research and finds out that it is a portal to another non-magical world. When Celestia finds out Sunny discovered the truth she "removes" from her status as apprentice and says that she will no longer train her. Sunny feels betrayed and stands up to Celestia but the Royal Guards take her away. She escapes the guards and runs through the mirror.

This is pretty much the only actual 'story' we have about her past. But keep in mind that this is a comic, it depends if u think they are cannon or not. (i personally dont cannon-ize them)

Okay you I don't think you've read the Comic which explains this. Spoiler below.

Basically she saw the mirror and saw an image of herself as a fiery alicorn. She pestered Celestia constantly about the mirror but Celestia refused to tell her anything. She sneaks into the dark magic section of the library and researches the mirror. She gets caught and is booted from being Celestia's student. As the gaurds are escorting her out she knocks them out and escapes through the portal.

I see it like this, as said in the first Equestria Girls, Sunset Shimmer is a former student of Celestia one that was removed from that title shortly before Twilight Sparkle was given it.

Later on Celestia said that she was not getting what she wanted at the pace she wanted which was. NOW. So this is my theory.

Sunset Shimmer used the portal to the "Human" world to find a new world that she could conquer with her knowledge of things and such. That's why in the first Equestria Girls Sunset Shimmer is always looking for a way to get more popular and win the er.. I'll just call it Grand Galloping Gala Crown because I can't for the life of me remember the correct term.

tl;dr Sunset Shimmer went to the human world in seek of fame and power.

To back up my theory in the end part of Rainbow Rocks. Sunset Shimmer sings the words "not singing for popularity" or something along the lines of that.

Cheers,

The story is quite consistent with what Celestia says about Sunset Shimmer in Equestria Girls, it just reveals a bit more detail about exactly what the conflict was between Sunny and Tia.

Spoiler below c&p it to a note pad to read.

You know, you can just type:

And it appears like this:

Okay, so I can now say I've read the comic.  I forgot there was a comic on this.

When Celestia finds out Sunny discovered the truth she "removes" from her status as apprentice and says that she will no longer train her. Sunny feels betrayed and stands up to Celestia but the Royal Guards take her away. She escapes the guards and runs through the mirror.

I think she gets kicked out because she can't trust her with access to the mirror or the castle library, which has incredibly power spells.

There are a few explanations for that, but here's what I wanna know. Why after going to the human world did she elect to attend high school?

Because that's the world the mirror led to.

Thanks everybody, good stuff. I've got some story ideas to write about now.

EDIT:

I'm imagining that she can't stray too far from it, maybe it's something like this:

But there was no need to actually attend the school. The sirens didn't bother going to school.

Hmm, I'm not sure. I think maybe the writers just wanted to make the Equestria Girls setting a high school.

High School, prom queens and teen culture are powerful tropes and of interest to younger kids and Tweens. I also think a confined location like high school made the writing easier or maybe Meghan watched Sixteen Candles and the Breakfast Club too many times as a kid. :)

She didn't know where she would end up, based on what she said when she emerged from the portal in the comic. "Well, this is an interesting development." The reason she went through the mirror is because she'd become obsessed with it. In a reflection she'd seen herself as a Princess and she felt it was her right to possess that power.

Why she ended up in that world specifically...canonically I'm not entirely sure but in my headcanon the mirror functions somewhat like the Mirror of Erised in Harry Potter, where it leads you to what you most desire.

Sunset desired power, but in her heart she desired friends. She ended up in a world where she could be 'powerful', yet petty, namely being popular in high school. At the same time, she eventually found friendship, her true desire, in that world. (Again, all of this is my headcanon, based on clues from the movies and the comics). I infer she desired friendship deep in her heart because she kept the magical book she could talk to Celestia with.

Twilight in turn ended up there because she desired the crown back, knowing what it could do. The second time she ended up there because she used the book to open the portal and the other 'marker' was in that world.

Agreed, that makes the most sense.

I know it's almost sacrilege, but I know nothing about Harry Potter. I haven't read any of the books or seen any of the movies.  However, I looked up the Mirror of Erised and it matches kinda what I was thinking for headcannon, that the reflection in the mirror is unique for each viewer.  I also thought that only you could see your own reflection and everybody else just saw a normal mirror reflection, not the one based on desire or whatever.  I thought that's more than desire, that it's reflection of what you think of yourself, Sunset Shimmer being arrogant.

Now here's my question.

What is the ontological nature of the mirrorworld?

In other words, when you go through the mirror, do you actually transport to another, physical world, or is the world perhaps entirely within the mirror itself?  (This is different enough from the OP that I should probably start another thread about it).
