When you think about it, a lot of the best games ever made have really gripping and engaging stories. They make us want to play the next game in the series all the more.

So what are some of your favorite games that have epic stories/plotlines?

The Brothers in Arms series has a pretty gripping story and excellent voice acting.

Some of my favorite games don't have amazing stories like Shadow of the Colossus or Pokemon X. But I really do love stories like in The Walking Dead Game, To The Moon and Persona 4 <3

The original Ace Attorney trilogy was incredible. All of the major events were intertwined somehow and the pacing was fantastic, the whole thing was just perfect. By the end of it you feel a genuine connect with the characters. Shu Takumi is a genius <3

Fire Emblem 4's story has a place on my heart as one of the best plots on the SRPG genre, and easily further.

To start with, the game is spanned into two generations. The first one is starred by Sigurd, one of the nobles of the house of Chalphy that, after one of his childhood friends was kidnapped by the Kingdom of Verdane, goes to rescue her, but, on th way, they reveal a darker plot that endangers the whole continent.

The most notorious mechanic of the gameplay is that, during the 1st generation, you can make your units fall in love with each other, to havr sons that will be the playable characters during the second generation(for reasons that I won't spoil). Also, the maps are huge, normally being set over an entire country.

Everything on the game is incredible. The story is easily one the darkest on the franchise, and maybe one of the darkest on the whole Nintendo family.

The characters can have conversations for the first time, which adds enjoyability to the game, and each gameplay can be different depending of which characters you pair.

But,to shorten things, Fire Emblem 4 has the best story I hac the pleasure to play in a long time.

I'd probably say one of the better stories I've had the pleasure of experiencing was in Bioshock.

It had an interesting premise and tackled it very maturely. With some realistic characters, fine twists and not to mention one of the greatest monologues ever near the end of the game.

I'll admit, I've seen better stories in other forms of media. But hey, it was still pretty damn good.

Most of my favorite games are story heavy, so were I to list all them I'd be here all day. A few stand outs though would be Paper Mario TTYD, the Mass Effect series and the Zero Escape series (999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors and Virtues Last Reward)

There are two franchises that really blew me away with their story. Kingdom Hearts and the Souls games.

Kingdom Hearts has many twists and turns throughout and one way or another everything is connected to something else. What makes these games great isn't necessarily that they make you want to play the next game (though they often do) but rather they play out the story in a way that makes the previous games better simply by existing. Every new entry in the series reveals more plot and that plot can be traced back to an earlier entry into the series in some way and it expands the way you think of that game's story.

I may be in the minority here but I believe the series could have been just as amazing or better if they had cut out all the Final Fantasy and Disney stuff. The main story of the games, which has little to do with those things, is infinitely better than any of the shoehorned and extremely simplified Disney stories and characters. The best part about all this is that it's not just dumb luck. Almost everything in the franchise was planned years in advance. From the very first KH game the creator knew where he was going with the series.

The Souls games (e.g. Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 1 & 2) take a very different approach to story than most other games. Nearly all of the game's story has to be figured out. Personally I could never figure it out on my own but there are a lot of lore and speculation videos out there that explain away a lot of the possibilities and you can effectively create your own theories about the story with what we are given.

I have a particular character I always use when I start a new Souls game. My personal headcanon is that this one character, or his descendants at the very least depending on the endings you choose in each game, has traveled to and defeated the evil that envelops the kingdoms in each game. I know they've said that Demon's Souls is in a completely different universe but all things considered I'm just waiting for them to pull an "loljk" on us and connecting all of the games one way or another. It's really too expansive to talk about in one post but if you've ever played the Souls games and haven't seen some of the lore videos floating around you should check them out. VaatiVidya is the one I go to most often. He spends a long time searching for every little hint of hidden lore and story in the games but he never goes so far as to establish his theories as official canon. His theories can help to bolster your own story if nothing else.

- The Walking Dead games, season 1 and 2.

I find them to be really emotional. You develop bonds with the characters and then the writers decide to kill that character. :c

- Far Cry 3

I like how the story tailors around insanity and how you get quotes every now and then about insanity. Such as this one from Alice in Wonderland: "Oh you can't help that, said the cat. "We're all mad here, I'm mad, you're mad."

"How do you know I'm mad? Said Alice."

"You must be, said the cat, or you wouldn't have come here."

- Bioshock: Infinite

Quantum mechanics, twisting resolutions, nuff said.

^^^^^^^^

The Original Trilogy of Ace Attorney games had it all. It had deep and intricate cases, those silly characters that kept the stories from being too dark and depressing (cuz if you think about it, those games are all pretty dark...) and the amazing main cast that you really just grow to care about. Plus the amazing running gags as well as the fact it was all usually woven together so seamlessly make it the best story series you can find. It's relatively close to being absolutely flawless from a story standpoint :D

Another one is BioShock Infinite, which is my personal favorite game of all time :D

The story is to die for - the gameplay is relatively weak and often just bang bang dead, objective is complete, and it felt kinda meh for a while. It had just enough substance to keep me going, though, and the final quarter of the game, when everything started coming together, showed how deep, beautiful, and intricate this game really is.

I won't spoil anything, but if you want an emotionally gripping yet incredibly complex and thought provoking story, then this is the ultimate game for you :D
