The story was a mess, the foreshadowing was bad, AJ and RD got flanderization episodes, no buildup or anything, and the worst thing is that the season finale (that i liked) was downright predictable. We all know that Discord was going to fail and that Twilight will have to save his world at the end, so Hasbro could sell their new toys. Moreover, how is it that Twilight+Celestia+Luna+Cadence fusion can match Equestria+Discord? Even if Tirek was just toying with her that doesnt make any damn sense!
If Hasbro will do two seasons more they should give the producers more freedom so this wouldnt turn the series i know and love into a stinking marketing crap like the new Simpsons.

If season 4 was the whole show, I don't think I'd like it any more than the previous generations.

Worst stories

Worst Pinkie

Worst Fluttershy

Worst songs

Worst jokes

Worst oneshot characters

Worst returning characters

Retroactively destroying the things that used to actually be good about the show...

I dunno; I thought it was the best of the series myself. Yeah, it wasn't perfect by any means, but I thought the stories were generally good and the characterizations were nice.

Again, other things could be better, like Pinkie, but she wasn't terrible, IMO.

I don't see the same problems a lot of people seem to. I enjoyed nearly all the episodes and thought it was as good as any other season if not more so. Maybe some people just like having something to complain about

Uh huh uh uh. So what I'm seeing here is a bunch of arguments that are pulled out of nowhere.

No buildup? Does the mystery box not mean anything to you?

Predictable? 90% of the episodes could be considered predictable

Hasbro not giving them creative freedom? Compared to what? The other seasons, which have more or less the same amount of creative freedom?

i liked it, for the same reasons i liked the other ones.

bunch of colorful horses running around, learning friendship lessons and learning songs.

that´s all i need to be decently entertained, i don´t look for an intriguing storyline in a my little pony cartoon.

(not that it wouldn´t be possible, but it has NEVER,EVER, in not a single season be the focus of the show to tell an overarching story)

For the sake of fairness, I'm going to assume you have valid reasons to hate season 4, and you just weren't thinking clearly enough to type clear and concise arguments.

I know I won't really be saying anything that hasn't been said before, but I think season 4 is the best season so far. I liked that there was an overarching story, and I hope they do something like that again. One could argue it's the season 3 we never got, and it did a good job of properly developing what season 3 introduced.

I really hope they do something to break the two-parter formula in though.

Merge with unpopular opinions thread? heh

Most of my show-watching friends think S1 and S4 are the best. I thought season 4 had a lot of strong episodes. I loved the season premieres, and Flight to the Finish, Rarity Takes Manhattan, Rainbow Falls, Maud Pie, Leap of Faith, Trade Ya, and Discord's character arc in Twilight's Kingdom were all really strong. I picked these ones specifically because the lessons learned were somewhat more nuanced than was standard fare in previous seasons.

It had a few bombs though. Castle Mane-ia? Bats? Meh. And AJ was just goofy in Somepony to Watch Over Me.

I loved season 4. It was very entertaining. I thought the stories and characters were great. The new ones were wonderful, like Maud, Cheese Sandwich, and especially Coco x3. The songs were amazing too. I really thought  the creators went above and beyond with that season. And the finally was fantastic. I don't think any of us were expecting that awesome Dragon Ball-esque  battle! XD

Since I'm only really interested in Twilight (maybe Rarity) mostly everything between the first and final episodes was tedious. They made it worse by ignoring Twilight's princessship the whole season, but I do get that the writers wanted things to come to a head in the finale. I think they could have dealt with her situation better. The truth is no season is perfect and they were having a season long arc, which was a really new thing for them. Maybe with more experience, they'll be better at it if it continues.

How many bad episodes did Season 3 have?

In my opinion, they were all bad except for sleepless in Ponyville, But that's my opinion.

Okay, here is a list that made Season 4 absolutely great and a season I'd watch again and again (and already have)

  • The rainbow powers arc was excellently executed and was a very good way to handle advertising a new range of toys, last time they did that it was a canterlot weddings Candance and Shining armour and before the episode aired people raged hard over another Alicorn out of no-where but it simmered
  • The premier and finale were both excellent in my opinion, yes the finale had some flaws but nearly all of the finales do. This one I could watch again and again though.
  • The return of Derpy after her awfully long absence from season 3
  • Dave Polsky entered the writing team and did a excellent job too, entering with Castle-mania one of my favourite episodes so far of the series
  • Maud Pie
  • rocks
  • rocks
  • and more rocks
  • Speaking of extra characters we saw a array of new characters that were likable and enjoyable to watch like Seabreeze, CoCo, Silver Shill, Cheese and so on
  • WE TRAVELLED THE ROAD OF GENERATIONS, JOINED BY A COMMON BOND!
  • I'll wait here for you to finish the song
  • The re-introduction to an old villain, that being Tirek, this shows that the show can easily adapt old generation villains and opens up so many doors for world building.
  • List of episodes I'd watch again and again (and already have) : 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 12, 14, 18. 21. 23. 25, 26.
  • Return of Flutterguy in an amazing episode.
  • Testing Testing 123 is also an excellent episode and speaks to me on a personal level because I had to learn differently from the norm.

I could go on but the list would go on for ages, long story short Season 4 is my favourite season

How many bad episodes did Season 3 have?

IMHO 7 of the episodes were bad.

Crystal Empire was pretty good,  Wonderbolt's Academy, was also pretty good, One Bad Apple, was good , Sleepless In Ponyville was really good, and than Keep Calm and Flutter on, was pretty good too.

So out of 13 episodes, You had six that were pretty good and 7 pretty bad/ "Meh" ones. IMHO

We talking about other over hated seasons? Okay. In that case the only not so good episodes I found from season 3 were One Bad Apple, Spike at your Service, and Just for Sidekicks.

*runs for having an unpopular opinion*

Well that's the thing, season 3 can be good depending on peoples tastes, I personally thought Season 3 was full of meh episodes that really didn't add anything to the show, They already abandoned Babs as a character in the animated show which is unfortunate cause she was one of the few good things about Season 3. But what hit the nail in the coffin for season 3 was Alicorn Twilight.

Now before you get on my case it's not the idea of Alicorn Twilight it was the way it was sloppily executed, the episode happened so fast the pacing was awful and they end on "Everythings going to be ok." which to me felt like a condescending plug to the brony fandom raging over the idea of Alicorn Twilight. Season 4 handled Alicorn Twilight much better including the fact that she showed that she didn't know how to use her wings unlike Season 3's ending where she uses them perfectly like "Lel i dunno wings now"

Still beats the 5 out of 24 good ones in Season 4.

I thought it was best season of the show. Pinkie Pride is the second best episode of the show (Lesson Zero is first,) Testing Testing 1, 2, 3, Maud Pie whom the Sweetie Belle Tolls are also classic episodes for me and Twilights Kingdom was the best Finale of the show. The only episode i would consider bad, is Bats! and that's it.

I thought it was hilarious that Twilight spends one episode investigating the keys, gets distracted by Celestia's diary, and like all the others, instantly forgets that the box exists at all for the rest of the season.

Bats is not great. I thought Princess Twilight Sparkle was pretty weak considering it was supposed to be a season opener. I mean, it's not a bad episode in itself, it sets up the overarching plot for the season, and it shows Twilight struggling to come to grips with her new role, but I'd expect more from an opener. Although I like it when Spike gets some character development, Power Ponies felt like filler to me. You could have edited out Twilight's wings and dropped that episode into season two or three and it would fit in just as easily.

Other than that, I thought it was a pretty strong season. I don't think it's either better or worse than any other season of the show. FIM seems quite notable in that there hasn't been any noticeable degradation of the writing as it's gone on. Many shows start out strong, but either get more boring and predictable as the writers start recycling plots, or more outlandish and silly as the writers avoid recycling. FIM seems to have avoided both traps so far.

I don't think she forgets about it at all. You see schematics for the box on her wall later on in the series. To me, this implies that she's still studying it in her spare time, but that's off-camera.

The whole show is like that. Remember the writers are like independent contractors and only get together early on in the planning, so Meghan has to keep things together and may not have full authority to do so all the time. It's amazing that the shows are even a bit coherent given the way they are created.

Gimmick episodes like Bats and Power Ponies and Daring Don't and Filli Vanilli etc etc etc aren't exactly that?

I quite enjoyed the following episodes from season four:

Flight to the Finish

Daring Don't

Rainbow Falls

Pinkie Pride

Maud Pie

Testing, Testing 1, 2, 3

Trade Ya!

That's not to say I didn't enjoy others, but the above episodes are the ones I go back and watch.  Again and again. x3

I feel this is one of those topics that purposely shoots for viability via intense dislike; elicits a decent number of replies that way.  Oh no - I replied. o_O  It apparently works lol. xD
