How The 2017 Movie Needs To Work In Order For It To Be Good

Okay, your probably thinking, isn't this better for a blog. Well I like to get responses from people, and also it isn't too long.

Last year, a movie was announced, and I feel I need to talk about how this could be considered a good film by the general public, and not just by bronies.

This movie needs to explain to newcomers the franchise. Pokemon: The First Movie did not do this, and that's why a lot of critics disliked it, as well as it also being a bad film. This film needs to be able to stand on it's own, not just be for bronies, to be considered a good film.

This is my personal opinion, but I think for this movie, they should move away from flash, and use a combination of hand drawn backgrounds with flash animated characters. The characters will look exactly the same as in the show, but I think the backgrounds need a makeover to make people believe that this is a movie, and that their putting extra effort into it.

Possible storylines include:

1. Starswirl The Bearded's first appearance, built up through the rest of the series

2. A return of Nightmare Moon through external force (sounds a little like Past Sins, but it could really work, and bringing back their first villain would be a good move)

3. How the mane 6 get older, go on their final adventure, and then move on with their lives in a series finale.

4. A larger scale 2 parter.

Ever since season 1 I had the idea of a movie where Twilight goes back in time to stop the original Nightmare Moon incident from ever happening, befriends a sad and alone Luna, and succeeds, eventually returning home. However, she realizes that Equestrian history has now been drastically altered and no one remembers her except for Luna. Throw in a crisis or two and bam, whatta story!

First off, we need to get a good director. Brad Bird I think would be a fantastic choice for this kind of movie, but anyone who knows how to direct a movie with skill and wit would be great.

This movie also needs to explain to newcomers the franchise. Pokemon: The First Movie did not do this, and that's why a lot of critics disliked it, as well as it also being a bad film. This film needs to be able to stand on it's own, not just be for bronies, to be considered a good film.

3. How the mane 6 get older, go on their final adventure, and then move on with their lives in a series finale where Twilight lives on while every one she knew has passed away, thus making her wish she never became a princess. She then goes back in time and makes it so Sunset Shimmer becomes a princess instead of her. THE END.

4. A larger scale 2 parter.

I made it more intense with a side dish of feels and a dash of fuel for the haters of Equestria Girls to get mad over a character exclusive to EQG showing up in the show while making absolutely no sense.

:P

Who said anything about of 2017 movie?

If they did make a movie based directly on the show; it will probably be in place of the final episode.

An official, non-EqG movie was confirmed a few months back.

Back on topic. How to make the 2017 movie good: Do exactly what they've been doing with the show.

What I think the movie really needs to be good is to have ponies in it.

The director was already announced. He never really directed anything before but he did write for a zombie movie before.

Flash seems pretty good to me. I don't see much more that can be done to improve upon it. Changing the animation style for the movie might make it harder for the animators to work with. It is best to have something they are familiar with.

Yeah, I actually agree. These were just MY hopes, all we can do is wait for the movie to come out and hope it's a solid film. If this is good, then the whole world might finally realize that MLP is not what it used to be, if it's bad, then the whole world will turn on us. What I meant to say was that I want the animation to get a bit of a makeover, a little bit like it did in Rainbow Rocks, but to a more drastic degree.

I heard that Meghan McCarthy's going to be producing, and behind the project. That's good news that the show staff will be watching, that gives it less chance of being terrible.

It should just be a fun adventure story that gets to highlight the Mane Six's personalities and give us an introduction into the country of Equestria. Something happens that is the catalyst to kick of why the adventure, small exposition after this involving the alicorn sisters and maybe Discord to give the new viewers and idea of the magical power and government hierarchy of Equestria, maybe a little bit on how the Mane Six are basically heroes, and Mane Six kick of towards adventure. I think those are some key elements that should be used to give a full introduction into some of the most important facts and lore to newcomers. The basic concept in itself isn't that hard. If worked with the right talent some really great musical numbers and plot that's Disney canon tier could be done.

Agreed.  It will look cheap if they don't.

This makes me nervous.

I want the movie to be objectively good and well received by the general public.  How it does that is variable, but it should showcase the best parts of the show.  I don't think it should be all adventure.  It should have moral subtext at the least.  The thing I'm worried about is that they'll try to show scenes showcasing each character and end up rushing everything.  I'll know better what to expect when I hear what the film is budgeted.

But my truest desire is that this film makes it okay to be a brony.  That would help the fandom tremendously.  But it could also explode...and then explode again, so it's kinda make or break.  A bad movie would be very damaging to the fandom.

Needless to say, I see the movie as important to future of bronydom.  I'm cheering the production team on!

Joe Ballarini wrote Ice Age 4, and he's writing and directing this movie.

That movie was decent, and I think that tone could work with MLP.

I'm a little bit nervous, but it seems to be taking all the right steps so far. They said recently that Hasbro are going to give it a budget of around 25 million dollars, which is pretty good.

I agree that the movie should be viewable even for people who don't know the show yet. I think @Dulset Tarn's idea could work quite well for that, really.

I'm actually quite anxious to see how they will handle that. As stated before, the Pokemon movie didn't do that and while I didn't mind I don't think it did the movie any favors. I've also watched a Winx Club movie on the movie channel once (out of sheer boredom, this is a series I actually don't watch at all) and I couldn't make any sense of it because nothing was ever explained.

Tying into that fear, I hope they give each of the Mane 6 enough screentime. In the Winx Club movie, only Bloom (the main character of the series, I think) had any personality to speak of. All the others were just...there. I'd really hate to see that happening to characters I like.

From what I understand he only wrote for one scene in Ice Age 4 and his name didn't even appear in the credits. In the credits they usually even name the caterers. So I don't know how much he actually contributed to that movie.

Hasbro usually doesn't get big named people to write their pony stuff. Lauren was the exception to that and it paid off well. The only thing Megan did before ponies was Fish Tails.

To me it doesn't seem like we are fishing in the deep end of the talent pool.

One thing I want is a villain who is considered a complete monster compared to every villain that the Mane 6(Including Equestria Girls villains) faced.  That's bigger than...

Nightmare Moon

Discord

Queen Chrysalis

King Sombra

Trixie

Sunset Shimmer

Ahuizotl

The Mane-iac

Tirek

The Dazzlings

There is no way you can get a bigger or more complete villian then the glorious Queen Chrysalis.

I'm sure he will be fine. He is a fan of the show and should know how to properly write the characters.

Does anyone have any idea what Hasbro budgets the show?
