Can you take a MLP FIM fan fiction seriously? Seriously as in fan fiction that deals with more mature themes (more mature themes than the story would deal with) like death, war, suffering, war of survival, tragedies and general hardship? Not that you would get upset about the story, but you won't just dismiss the entire story, just because it has MLP Ponies in it.

Or would the fact that MLP FIM is a cartoon, therefore you can't take any 'serious' MLP FIM fiction seriously?

Personally, I can take a MLP FIM story quite seriously (if written well too) as long as it doesn't directly reference its a cartoon in the story.

I've read a few serious one, like 'pinkie pie's suicide psychosis' and 'I am not gay,' and if it's written well enough and doesn't try to be funny at the same time, i can definitely take them seriously! Not only that, but they're good reads too. I prefer the serious ones over the comedic ones.

Silent Ponyville is the only one I have taken seriously (Fallout Equestria as well so far but I haven't finished it). I'm usually into it until they say "hooves" or "everypony" and then I realize that I'm reading my little pony fanfiction.

When I read "Past Sins" I started it thinking it was a it silly, but boy was I wrong. It has to be one of the most amazing and sophisticated books I have read. And I'm not just being biased, it was truly amazing...

Yeah, I can take them seriously. They're character of fiction and as such can be used to the whims of the author. The general tone of the show really does nothing to change that for me.

One of the best examples is "It's dangerous business going out your door..." as it takes the possible death of Twilight and the general interaction between the three ponies who go on the quest to get things going.

So yes; I can take them serious.

As long as its written well, almost any fanfiction can be taken seriously, and some have even changed my life in small ways. I could reference the obvious Fallout Equestria, but I'm going to take one I read a while ago as my example.

It's about a changeling linguist spy, who is sent to Canterlot to learn how to blend in. It honestly changed my perspective on language.

I do take them seriously, but it depends on the fic i'm reading. For example, "Black Equinox"; this fic has had hooked since i started and i want more. Its interesting to see what scenario's people come up with, "Past Sins" offered a good story. But they could have nerfed it down a little as not to make Nyx OP. But overall, yeah, i do.

Idk if youve ever read fallout equestria and project horizons, but theyre very damn convincing.

Plus, in terms of death, theres death in FiM in one of the songs, sweetie bell insults a funeral director infront of a casket and the flimflam brothers reference pestilence, broken bones and old age

Yes. There are some really well thought out pieces out there.

For me, the thing that makes or breaks a piece of fan fiction is how well it fits into canon. If something directly contradicts canon, then that kills it for me as far as taking it seriously goes. Of course it can still be an enjoyable story, but it has to have something else going for it to persuade me to read it — like being really funny for example.

Something like Fallout: Equestria deals with very serious issues, and does so in a way that rather than contradicting canon, builds upon it, adding another layer. (Actually, it does contradict canon in various places, but it didn't at the time it was written — events in canon happened which made some of its assumptions incorrect. So I can forgive it.)

Of course I can take them seriously, as long as the stories in question are well written and take themselves seriously rather then being focused on comady.  In fact, I recently read this one story on FIMfiction where Rainbow Dash and Twilight Sparkle get fused together called "veil of thought".  Dispite the fact that it's based on MLP and and the weird premise of the story itself, it's really bucking awsome.  Btw, here's the link (http://www.fimfiction.net/story/34351/veil-of-thoughts).  That's not just a story.  That's a work of art.

It depends on the story, if it is something like Cupcakes I can't take it seriously because it is so over the top that I can't help but laugh my ass off. I have however read some MLP fanfics that do tackle more mature themes and I don't just mean mature as in clop/gore fics either that have been written quite well. There is this fic I have been tracking for example called Why Am I Crying which is this fic where Diamond Tiara dies in a carriage accident and it deals with the CMC's different reactions to it with Apple Bloom feeling bad for Diamond Tiara despite her cruelty toward her and her friends, Sweetie Belle fearing death and Scootaloo being indifferent.

I never take them seriously, I think it makes them more enjoyable because good or bad, they are what they are.

Its like life, There's a lot less stress involved if you don't take it too serious.

Depends on how it's presented. If it portrays an accurate representation of the characters i.e. Cupcakes, and is overall well written, then there's a chance I'll take it seriously and like it.

However, it'll be a lost cause if it's written like so:

""Hey your a jerk and you know it." yelled I as he said clenching his fist while yelling. (you know normally stuff ouside at lunch time)

"Well you know what i say that you can take you @#$@#$@ !#@ out and go bug someone else" said the bully"

Overall, it really just depends.

Nah I can't. I've never really like all those tragic, dark-themed fan fictions because I prefer to see the show innocently.

If I didn't take it seriously I'd have no business writing it. While I don't read many MLP fics I would definitely take a well-written one seriously. Some fanfics in other fandoms have made me appreciate the franchise they're based on all the more, like some Pokemon fics I've read.

On the topic of fics with more 'mature' subjects like death and suffering...I feel that an MLP fic could handle these things perfectly well, as long as the author doesn't forget the source. MLP always needs a bit of hope, a display of friendship to solve the problem at hand (not necessarily friendship lasers, either).

For instance writing a fic where a loved one dies and friendship helps the bereft move on would work, but a war drama showcasing the cynicism of modern times and the faults of epic tales of glory on the battlefield should not be told through colorful talking ponies. War can be alluded to or even invoked, but it needs to have a certain idealistic edge and not devolve into utter mayhem and piles of corpses.

Likewise, deep political schemes should also be kept out of MLP fics because they clash so harshly with the tone of the show.

Having said all this, a truly gifted author can kick these things to the curb. One of the best fics I've ever read was a K-ON fic called 'No Thank You', an AU story where the cheerful, bubbly musician girls are all deeply scarred, have Yakuza for parents, are gang leaders and deal with horrible violence that is about as distant from the source material as we are to Proxima Centauri. However, the characters are written so well, and the source is referenced enough to make it feel like a K-ON fic just the same.

All in all, unless you're exceptionally talented, try to stay true to the show's tone and you'll be fine.

The only thing I do not take seriously is Ronan the Accuser...

Seriously, though, if it's well written enough, it deserves to be taken seriously.

Keepers of Discord.

Was a well conceived story. The author actually created several generations of OC's that the reader could care about. The fics take on Discord's imprisonment and how he/she played on how people tend to have a emotional connection to inanimate items was appreciated.

Yes, Fan Fiction most certainly can be taken seriously. Most of the work is raw, but some of it is downright brilliant. Some show the beginnings of a promising wordsmith. Take for instance, The Things We Leave Behind  - this is the proper way to handle a sad fic.

Look, I read a lot of material that many would consider AP level literature. For example, all this current talk about a certain Vonnegut short story being the possible influence on a Season 5 episode is leaving me giddy. Basically, my tastes in lit are objectively decent. I found merit in fan fiction. Some of it is better than the professionally edited and marketed work you will find on the NY Times list.
