Is Applejack more Eastern or Western?

Applejack is pretty much generically southern, and in a fantasy world to boot, so it doesn't matter. But I was wondering what you think Applejack is most similar to. There's actually a lot of differences in 'Southern' cultures if you didn't know. Her cowgirl hat and rodeo skills are wild west influenced (even though she works on an orchard instead of a ranch) so that points to western. But I have heard her accent is most like Tennessee, and that points to eastern.

I actually want to know what people think. When you think about Applejack, do you think of Texas, or do you think of the deep south? Or something ells? I however think we can rule out Louisiana, because Applejack isn't French (albeit French that have been living in the deep south for a long time).

There is no right answer to this, as I said, she is generically Southern, and voiced by a Canadian.

On a side note, I would love for there to be a Southern Belle type character.

I've always thought she had a bit of an Arkansas-Kansas-Missouri accent, to be honest, which are all part of the western part of the American South. So I'd have to say Western, from what I can gather as a southerner myself :please:

To be perfectly honest, though, all I can say for sure is that she doesn't speak with a Texan accent.

Western, People in the Western south (example: Western NM) have thicker accents then people in the Eastern South (example: Houston).

But she does not have a Texan accent, I live in Texas and very few people I know talk with that thick of an accent.

Tennessee and Kentucky are right next door to Arkansas and Missouri, so... I guess she can be seen as either more Eastern or Western. But not Texan, as you say.

She's neither. She's based on apple farmers near the Ozark mountains, in Northeastern Arkansas. I got this from the wikia, so I really don't know if what I'm saying has any real validity.

I just looked that up on the MLP wiki, it isn't sourced.

Well, I can't say much, though I will say that Applejack is definitely not derivative of the people who live in southern West Virginia. She definitely lacks that hillbilly and/or redneck vibe. XD

Ashleigh Ball reportedly based her voice on a couple of Tennesseean singers, including Miley Cyrus. However, the character lives up to many Western archetypes, so we can firmly say she is a smattering of many common Southern and Western tropes, however I would definitely rule out the states of Louisiana, Florida, and Virginia since they are considerably culturally distinct from the rest of the South (Louisiana for its French and Cajun influences, Virginia for Northeastern influences, Florida for Caribbean influences, etc.).

Her voice is (allegedly) directly based on Miley Cyrus of Nashville origins, but I honestly don't hear it. Canadians clearly don't know what southerners sound like but that's not the point. Her accent is definitely more western, the American Southeast isn't nearly as thick-accented.

We can definitely rule out Virginia, Maryland, Florida, the Carolinas, and Louisiana for sure though. Alabama and Georgia are the closest things in the east to her accent but even them it's not a good match.

Ashleigh Ball's voice for Applejack was inspired by both Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton, both of whom are Tennessee natives. It's safe to say that her accent is more "Southern" than anything. However, her role as a farmer, combined with her "cowgirl" hat and herding expertise are much more indicative of both real and fictional portrayals of the cowboys of the Western American frontier. I've always maintained that Applejack is more Western than Southern, but you can probably find influences of both in her character.

Stereotypical or not, I love that little bit of cultural charm that she adds to the cast, as I think it helps her stand out in her own unique way. Plus, cowboys/girls are just plain cool. :icwudt:

I've always thought of her as being southern, like part of the deep south. I've lived in Texas, Arizona, and California--all places considered the west. Applejack's accent reminds me nothing of that.

I think there's a big irony here. Applejack is modeled after a country girl, either Southern Texan or Midwestern at the least. But she also grows apples and neither Texas, or any of the Midwestern states are known for apple growing. All the large apple producers are in the Northern states - New England, Michigan, Washington and California.

Actually she could be from Idaho - a big apple producer, although I don't know what Idahoans are like culturally, aside from the fact that they live quite a rural lifestyle.

Actually come to think of it, North Carolina is another large apple grower and they're within the South, especially when it comes to dialects.

If I had to bet, I'd say she's closest to being a Carolinian.

Accent does not change between Arizona and georgia, since her accent matches those and her style matches that of Texas. I have no clue wtf you ponies are talking about.

"Accent does not change between Arizona and Georgia", what!?

Could be either but I'm gonna go with western or possibly Idaho .

I don't know anything about Idaho, but I don't think its southern, culturally.

As a non-American, all I can say is she sounds like a cowgirl American.

Applejack's influences are southern culture in general, her look and rodeo skills are cowgirlish, but accent is not. Thats what I think anyways.

Accent. Its all the same from everyone that lives inbetween the lower states of Arizona and Georgia. Its all the same Western southern Jargon with almost little to no difference.
