Does Anyone Steampunk?

Taviscratch

Recommended Posts

So I have just purchased the last few things to finish off my steampunk outfit. The last few things were some leather Mauser magazine pouches and a Fair Trade South American poncho. It's not your typical steampunk gear and is much more airship pirate or survivalist than Victorian. I have no reason whatsoever to wear it but I love steampunk and dieselpunk. I'll be posting pictures once it's all put together.

What about you guys and gals? Do you like Steampunk, Dieselpunk, Clockpunk or any other kind of punk? Have you made outfits and would you want to share pictures?

I have a steampunk outfit that I wear to events (people say that I look like a conductor in Wonderland) and have dabbled in modifying toy guns with the witchcraft that is Rub 'n' Buff, but I haven't yet really gotten involved in the DIY aspect of it. I want to, though - steampunk stuff is amazing.

Can't wait to see the pictures once your outfit is put together! What more are you looking for to complete it?

I'm basically just waiting for the last few pieces to arrive but I will probably keep adding to it. I would like some better boots than the one's I currently have but I can't afford them at the minute. I'm also looking for a decent aviator helmet (the old style leather caps) but I find it's difficult to find good quality ones.

I recently got myself a GP-5 gas mask complete with filter and bag:

Unfortunately, it came in black not the grey that I ordered so it looks like more of a sex thing XD

What the hay, here are a couple of photos of a work in progress. Once I finish repainting and retexturing the gun, I'm going to start looking through my bag of random disassembled gears and bits and bobs to find pieces that would look good in the middle and coming out the front barrels.

Me? Steampunk? Nah, not really. I can't see myself going to any conventions or any of that. It's pretty interesting and I enjoy some of the music regardless! Definitely an awesome bunch of people that enjoy expressing their creativity! :)

I'm a huge fan of Abney Park before Nathaniel Johnstone left. It just isn't the same without him. End of Days and Aether Shanties were both really good.

Although I've never been one for the whole dressing up thing, I am a huge fan of steampunk artwork and creation. It's just something about the clashing of the old and new technologies that intrigues me; it has that very grungy and crude design, however it works in such an intricate and ornate way that makes it completely majestic and incredible.

Very cool so far! It's a little raygun gothic like from the pulp era. I started working on a toy raygun scratch built from old electrical parts with my grandad when I was a little kid but, alas, it did not survive :(

I think black could work, the problem is that it has a very rubbery texture when you should look into something a bit more leathery. Another suggestion would be modifying it to only cover the face rather than the whole head, that combined with a cool hat and some crazy hair coming out the back would look pretty cool indeed.

Well, Taviscratch, it looks like we know where your interest in steampunk came from! Have you ever considered trying to remake it?

Fulfill your destiny.

I have thought about it but all of the parts we used are now obsolete and almost impossible to find at a decent price. My grandad died a good few years ago now and we've just left his workshop undisturbed. I don't really feel comfortable doing it but more because of having to ask my nonna for permission. I don't think I'd offend my grandad. Nah, he'd want me to recreate that badass raygun.

Well I already have the crazy hair XD It only cost me £6 so it's not like I lost much, plus the bag is super cool. I like the look of the GP-5 for the likes of dieselpunk and don't think it really needs to be modified. I also have some nose and mouth respirators made from black plastic which I will modify as soon as I get the opportunity.

As for hats, I'm liking my tatty German forage cap. I am thinking of topping it all of with a tricorn hat though.

Well for dieselpunk it will certainly work. I'm not a fan of the grey mask with green respirators personally, they remind me more of something out of World War II. I prefer a leather and yellow brass look.

I agree but WWI gas masks are impossible to find and are huge and clunky. The GP-5 is even later than WWII, actually as production started in 1970, at the height of the cold war, complete with connotations to nuclear annihilation. I like the post-apocalyptic reclaiming lost technology style of dieselpunk. I'm not even sure if that's a style of dieselpunk but it is now XD Also, leather doesn't lend itself to a gas mask so it kind of has to be rubber. It'll stay in the bag anyway because I'm not going to be wearing a vintage GP-5 left over from the cold war. The bag itself is really cool as it has a belt to go around your waste and sits on your hip with a thong to tie around your thigh much like how a cowboy holster would sit.

Another reason I'm not wearing the gas mask is because the old filters contain asbestos.

For source material, if you can find any of the old Space 1889 game stuff, it's not too bad.  Also, the original Tom Swift stuff (recently republished as E books on Amazon)  TASER stands for Thomas Alva Swift's Electron Rifle.  I saw that on a 60 minutes episode.

I really like Steam punk. I just don't know where to get the items I want to outift myself :P. I would like to buy the game "The Order: 1886" as that is a very Steam punked game (also very well done in terms of visuals and graphics).

Army Surplus is a great place to find things. Most of the stuff is things like modern webbing or boots which aren't helpful but occasionally you'll get something like a pith helmet.

Amazon and ebay are both good places to get stuff but thrift shops can be equally useful. A lot of people fall into the trap of going on Amazon and searching "steampunk clothing" before balking at the prices. Adding "steampunk" to a piece of clothing seems to double it's price. The trick is to collect various items that are not steampunk but create a steamy picture when put together.

As for The Order 1886, it's visuals are lovely but it is all it's got.

It's all for the sake of art, it doesn't have to be functional :P

...unless you actually plan on dealing with mustard gas or a nuclear fallout at some point in the future of course.

I've hear that the asbestos in old gas masks is in a separate compartment of the respirator and can't be breathe in unless there it's damaged or something.

I know what you mean but I don't have the time or the space to make a leather gas mask or respirator. I might paint the metal parts a brassy colour though. Well the asbestos is in the filter so if you attach the filter and wear the mask you will be breathing it in but it is tiny amounts. No Asbestos is better than any asbestos though.

That's a thought; I could take a craft knife and tweezers to the filter to remove all the internal parts and clean it out. It would also make it easier to breathe while wearing the mask.
