Veteran Advice and Welcoming

Just a short time ago, @HawkeyePierce and I started a little conversion about about an idea he has. We know that in the Welcoming Plaza that we can say hello to new members and talk to them about our site. But Hawk has a rather interesting idea to have Vet be able to properly give advice to a new member. Almost like assigning a camp councilor or the most experienced member show a new person around the the location, or at least explain a little about what we do here. I can redirect you to what we talked about here, so you can get an idea of what we were talking about. I just thought it would be something to bring to the attention of someone who can see if this would be worth while or not.

This is a very cute idea! I think that it might be a fair amount of work to put together, since it's something that would have to be treated very carefully. A single bad vet/newbie interaction could prove very detrimental to the forum's reputation, but a reputation of making every newcomer feel welcome could be very good for us overall.

 

Interesting, but managing a team of welcomers will be a big task for someone to decide to take on.

It is a big task, but one cannot be sure upon results till action to do so has been taken. If this would be implemented, the results of such a thing can go many ways, but we never know if we do not try. But I do agree that our rep could improve more with a group of vets that welcome ponies and give them the brief explanation about what the site has to offer them.

Seems like a great idea! On a forum I used to go on, we had "Greeters" who's job on the forum was to welcome newbies, give them the links to the forum rules and inform them that if they needed any help understanding forum rules or navigating the site, they were to PM one of the Greeters. Greeters weren't Mods; they didn't have any mod powers, just a pretty "Greeter" tag under their title. All the Greeters were listed by name in the rules topics.

Wow~ It seems like you've got it all figured out. Saves me time thinking about it. I swear, the new ponies for some reason are ruling the ideas sector on this. I have no qualms with it. I say it's pretty awesome we are talking about this and working it out.

 

*Edit* lol I read the post so fast that I didn't realize that you were mentioning that this idea came from another forum which enforces it. Still, something like that would hopefully work here. It would put a load off the staff.
