I have played Battletoads.  It might not be the hardest game I have every played because I grew up with the Nintendo, but if not it is still up there.  Never beat it because it was too hard, but that is typical of a lot of Nintendo games I played.

None of the Souls games are particularly hard unless you're playing them wrong. There are several builds you can use that make the game a cakewalk even on your first playthrough.

If you wanna talk about a hard game, and not one that's hard because it has shitty programming or intentionally made difficult to make a two hour game last for six, then I'd have to go with Odin Sphere. I've yet to beat it. I may never. Admittedly I was stupid and didn't level up my health as much as I could have but the bosses in that game are brutal. Particularly the end of book bosses like Odessa.

Please.

Treasure Island Dizzy. GG. I doubt many people still remember that title.

But from something more relevant... hm... Gothic II: Night of the Raven. That difficulty increase provided with the addon...

As for Dark/Demons' Souls series, these games were only hard during first playthroughs. After that, you can basically just run through the entire game, replay value is a bit low, even with new game+. Though Demons' Souls had the replay value by forcing players to make multiple game runs if they wanted to get the best possible gear, due to something called "world tendency", dependent on how many times you've died in human form.

I'd argue that they're only really hard on the first playthrough of the first game even. Every single game in the series shares the same core mechanics. Once you get those down the rest is just adaptability. Adapt or die, as it were.

And even then you can easymode the entire game by using greatshields and elemental weapons.

I'll throw in my hat just for fun, and say Dwarf Fortress.

Virtually any game by comparison looks easy to learn and make progress in. Though, it was 'hard' in the way that after about an hour of guides and such I still didn't know what I was doing well enough to establish a solid, rudimentary base. I didn't even progress far enough to properly fail.

Also Dwarf fortress is one of those games you can never win, if memory serves.

The first Dark Souls...

...and I am ashamed of this. The lore and the story are so tantalizing... ;_;

  • 2 weeks later...

Haven't played Dark Souls, I know both of them are labeled as "Rage Quit games" and require a ton of patience though. Hardest game I've played? Gears of War 3 online, know what I'm saying? It's like Gnasher city there, haha.
