My Review of Equestria Girls and Rainbow Rocks

I know what you're thinking: "You just now saw them?! What took so long!!?"

I will admit I was VERY hesitant to watch these, mainly because of where it took place. Anything that even remotely looks like a high school drama makes me flee faster than a Priest at a Slayer Concert. However, I am glad I was wrong about my assumptions I had for it. Both movies weren't as bad as a lot of people said they were, but at the same time I think I see why those people disliked them... Let us begin (spoilers after this point):

Equestria Girls 1 In A Nutshell:

So it starts off with ex-student of Celestia, Sunset Shimmer, sneaking into the castle to steal Twilight's crown (Boy are the royal guards useless, I am glad that gets rectified in my novel). The crown's magic is needed for Sunset Shimmer to use it and rule over the dimension she was hiding in, and it gets thrown through a portal in a mirror that leads to that dimension where everyone who was a pony is now a human with wacky colored skin and hair. Twilight is instructed to run in there after her to get that crown back alone by Princess Celestia, and Spike thought to himself "Screw that, she needs help with this sort of thing!" and runs into the portal after Twilight. Of course Twilight wigs out when she sees what she became (who wouldn't?), and explores the school and finds the human counterparts of her known friends. Twilight then figures out that Sunset Shimmer caused them to break up their friendship with devious acts and quickly got them back together. The crown somehow is now relevant to a school event that Twilight must take place in to get it back, since it got taken by the Celestia in that dimension after being a lost and found item when it flew through the portal first. Both Sunset Shimmer and Twilight both compete in this event to get the crown, and eventually Twilight wins in the end by uniting the school with friendship, even after much deliberate sabotage was done by Sunset Shimmer. When Sunset Shimmer knows she lost, she lures Twilight to the portal entrance and threatens to break it down if she doesn't hand over the crown. After a friendship speech from Twilight basically saying "Not gonna happen.", Sunset Shimmer attempts to steal back the crown by force and eventually succeeds. When she puts the crown on, she turned into a large fiery Demoness because of her negative willpower that channeled into the element. Sunset Shimmer decides to turn the entire school roster into mind-controlled zombies after they see her transform into a Demoness, and decides to blast the Mane 6. Somehow the magic of friendship repelled the blast and the Mane 6 got together, transformed into half human half pony hybrids by adding a tail and horse ears to their figures. They blasted Sunset Shimmer back, reversing her transformation and mind-control spell. After Sunset Shimmer crawls out of the crater she was blasted into, she begs for forgiveness and wants to change her ways. They all accept her friendship, Twilight's work was done, and she enters the portal with the crown and Spike and goes home. Upon leaving, the transformation effect on the Mane 6 immediately vanishes because Twilight took all of the magic back with her to Equestria.

Analysis:

Pros:

1. The intro music was good, I liked it.

2. They didn't turn it into a school drama.

3. Still had the flare of FiM even though it was a spin-off.

Cons:

1. Sunset Shimmer wasn't all that threatening til it got to the end, I feel they could have done more with her.

2. Inconsistencies are present with the FiM and comic series'. (Nothing I can't fix with my novel. :-P)

3. The bits of Flash Sentry and Twilight Sparkle romance needed to not happen, ever. Especially when Flash Sentry was so... BLAND.

4. There was zero explanation as to why the magic of friendship worked in that dimension without the Elements of Harmony being present.

5. The crown being in possession of the school faculty etc could have been written better, currently it feels... Half-assed.

6. It lacked A LOT of lore development within that dimension, such as not seeing any teachers at the school other than Cheerilee, not seeing any parents of the students, and Twilight Sparkle and Spike's double never appeared.

Overall, the movie isn't that bad, but the inconsistencies it has with FiM and its comic series are most likely what made it bad to some people. Would I consider this canon to the main FiM series? Yes. This was written in such a way that anything of this movie can get brought up at any time in future seasons for plot convenience sake. Should that ever happen? I don't mind it, but the people that see the obvious flaws will have to look passed those flaws.

Equestria Girls 2 Rainbow Rocks In A Nutshell:

This one starts off by showing off the new villains of that dimension called "The Dazzlings", who are Sirens banished to that realm by Starswirl The Bearded thousands of years ago. They see the events that took place at the end of the 1st movie from a great distance and want to siphon the sensed Equestrian magic to gain their power back. Sunset Shimmer is getting along well with the Mane 6 despite all that happened in the 1st movie. But, her bad reputation has left her shunned by the rest of the school roster wherever she goes. She offers to show the new students of the school around so they get to know the new Sunset Shimmer before they hear about her old bad self from the other students. Before that she was watching the Mane 6 play in their newly formed band called "The Rainbooms". And for some reason when the Mane 6 play music exceptionally well, they transform like they did at the end of the 1st movie. As she shows the new girls around, she senses something off about them, and no sooner does she tell the Mane 6 about it in the cafeteria; the Dazzlings walk in and sing a song that causes everyone in the room but the Mane 6 to start getting competitive with each other over a school battle of the bands event. When they started getting competitive they exhumed negative energy and the Dazzlings fed off of it, giving them more magical power by absorbing it into their enchanted chokers. The Mane 6 see this and fled the cafeteria to find a way to tell Twilight about it. Sunset Shimmer pulls out an old magic book from her locker that acts as a 2 way communicator when you write in it. (See Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets for an example on how that works) Somehow the other book just so happened to be getting delivered to Twilight's Castle to be put in her Library, and as it arrives it starts glowing and vibrating like a cell phone alert. Twilight picks it up the book reads it, and explains to her friends that she needs to go back there again after looking up the sirens that were banished there. She devises a way to channel the dimensional portal in such a way that she can enter it at any time, using the magical source of Sunset Shimmer's book due to how it works. When she arrives there with Spike again, they all explain the situation, and Rainbow Dash shows Twilight what happens when they play music really well. Twilight could no figure out why that was happening, but moves on to creating a counter spell to the Dazzlings Hypnotic magic singing. Twilight needed time to devise a way for the counter spell to work, so the Mane 6 go the preliminaries of the event to buy her time. After much sabotage and chaos caused by the Dazzlings and students, Twilight figures out that the counter spell will have to be channeled through their music playing during the school event. Just before the main event, the Dazzlings convince Trixie to force the Rainbooms out of the finals by trapping them underneath the stage. As the Mane 6 are trapped below they start getting negative towards each other, as they got negative towards each other, Sunset Shimmer sees thier magic being siphoned through negativity and breaks up the commotion. Twilight then figures out that the counter spell must be done with positivity and friendship, and manage to escape thanks to Spike and Vinyl Scratch who was unaffected by the Dazzlings' spell because she never takes her headphones off. The Rainbooms set up their gear on the opposite side of the staging area using Vinyl Scratch's custom made car, and proceed to have a band battle in between the crowd. The Dazzlings absorbed enough magic before they got on stage that they manifested their true forms outside of their human bodies, and the Rainbooms were repeling their attacks with magical music channeled as the counter spell. Sunset Shimmer joins in the band when they find out they need a boost in power and eventually they force enough of the counter spell into the Dazzlings' enchanted chokers that they burst, forcing them to lose their powers and talent for singing. They immediately fled the stage after getting boo'd off for their bad singing and were never to be seen again. Sunset Shimmer is offered a position within the band after being on the side lines for so long, Twilight Sparkle's job is done, she bids her friends farewell til they meet again, and she leaves through the portal with Spike.

Analysis:

Pros:

1. The singing voices on the Dazzlings were beautiful, I loved it.

2. The movie was more developed compared to the first one. (noticeable since the nutshell story was larger above too.)

3. The villains were also more developed compared to the first movie.

4. Still retained the flare from FiM.

Cons:

1. The Twilight and Flash Sentry romance made another appearance.

2. More inconsistencies were present with the FiM and comic series'. (Still nothing I can't fix with my novel. :-P)

3. No real explanation was given as to why the transformation magic worked on the Mane 6 even after Twilight left their dimension.

4. Lack of lore development in that dimension remained.

Overall this was also a good a movie, probably superior to the 1st movie in terms of development. Would I consider this canon to the main FiM series? Yes. This was also written in such a way that anything of this movie can get brought up at any time in future seasons for plot convenience sake. Sunset Shimmer and the Dazzlings will definitely make an appearance in FiM and the comic series' without a shadow of a doubt.

Please feel free to correct my analysis sections etc, I want to make sure I have everything in order while I am writing my novel in case I want to bring up anything from this spin-off series of movies. ^^
