How did your OC originate?/How did you come to an idea for your OC?

As the topic name states, how did you come across a thought for your OC/Ponysona?

How did you come up with things like:

- Appearance

- Abilities

- Personality

- And other things you can possibly think about!

Also how did you even begin to start of an OC/Ponysona, did yah do it for RP sake or just for fun thoughts, maybe for extra fun, do you use your OC/Ponysona often and for things like PC avatar/backgrounds?

I`m really interested in hearing your OC`s/Ponysona`s Orgins!

My OC was made for no reason really. Just for the lulz :P

Basically everything about my OC is just a reflection of who I am in real life (I wear glasses and so does my OC, I'm a Christian so it reflects that in its cutie mark, etc.)

My OC came from when one of my friends showed me the pony generator website on how to make a character. We got a couple friends making some as well and I just thought of what he would look best as to me. His abilities are being able to play video games pretty well and can have some video game type magic. His personality is the same as me in real life and I did it for fun thoughts, but I want to use my OC more often.

My OC is practically my Ponysona a.k.a who I'd like to be in Equestria.  :D

  • Appearance: I always like black as my favorite color and I haven't seen many ponies with that color for their coat in the show so I think I'd be a little unique.  As for the mane and tail color, it's because of his talent. :please:
  • Abilities: Well I have always been interested with lightnings so I have thought like this: "How to make him useful but with lightnings..." Then ding! A light bulb appeared on my hea-- No. Just kidding. :P I was thinking about thunderclouds and how he could help preventing them if needed so that's how I thought of his ability. Sorta.  :please:
  • Personality: Simply put, I made him to have some good parts of my own personality IRL. You wouldn't want to meet my bad side... :rarity:

This is a brilliant thread idea! Wish I thought of it sooner. :D

  • Appearance: Originally Paint Brush started out as a Pony Creator pony, and not a pretty one at that. She was black with bright blue highlights and wore many accessories, which kind of made her almost look like one of those bad OCs/fancharacters. Originally I decided on that design because around the time I thought it looked cool.

Paint's current design is kinda modelled after an actual paintbrush, from how her mane and tail are shaped, to the brown colours. Her handkerchief gives some people an idea on her personality.

  • Abilities: Her talent is painting. Okay, so this is definitely not the most original talent idea, so I decided to put a twist in Paint's talent.

In her backstory, Paint's magic experienced delays ever since she was a filly. Although she can perform basic spells like levitation, anything else would result in a magic surge. Although these surges gave Paint quite some annoyance, it has helped her develop her custom style which she likes to call Splatter Art. I decided on this idea so I can make Paint imperfect, but I didn't want to make her magically disabled as it'll make her an Earth Pony instead. On a related note, her magic does develop, but ever so slowly. She likes to read magic spell books.

Paint is also great at attracting a crowd, as well as pulling pranks. I decided on these two as A. I have more OCs/fancharacters who are friends with Paint and B. It gives her a bit more of a personality.

  • Personality: To sum it up quickly, Paint is a sociable pony with ambitious goals. She can be too focused on her goals to the point of isolation, cockiness and being a little crude. She can also be a little eccentric, but she still loves being around others. Admittedly, I still haven't entirely though out of Paint's personality. I decided on these traits so I can make her feel more lively, but I honestly can't say I'm too fond of it. I've been thinking about rewriting her personality soon, though.

Back when I joined my first pony forums, I knew I needed a name that could somewhat fit in the MLP universe but I didn't want something too... fluffy I guess.

People around me tend to be astounded of how much I can tolerate hot and sunny weather so I figured it'd be something along those lines. The thing about me that seems to stand out is how I can be out in the weather even as I feel the rays of the sun very slowly burning my skin so... That's where the name came from.

SunBurn is also a donkey instead of a pony species. The reason for that being is how donkeys are embedded as being part of the old way of life in the country I'm from. We have wild donkeys as well so I thought it'd be fitting for me. As for the colors, you could say that comes from the colors of the earth in the dry season which can look orange-ish and sometimes martian. At least that was the starting point.

So yeah, you could say that I carry a part of my home country in my OC.

Thank you! :D

I`m really interested in it and also I think of people without and OC/Ponysona can get inspiration from everypony here who posts about their OC/Ponysona and way they originates, I am busy creating mine now so I came with that idea and made a thread!

The main one is a mix between my personality, Tarzan and a bit of symbolism. His time in the Everfree would translate into my most depressing years.

About his mark, I've always been a pretty clear-headed guy during nightime, so I just rolled with it.

And the other one would come to terms with my interestelar in astronomy, although now I'm quite outdated on the matter.

Timey Marey... hmm... I'll explain it.

Back then, in 2013, I seriously needed to replace that Vietpony guy, I can't remember but ehh... I'd rather not talk about him.

So, I thought of Ignition (Timey Marey's name way early, back when she was created), named after a certain 1997 video game that I still play to this day, and she was destined to replace Vietpony. Once she was done, she stayed my OC for 2 or 3 months before I decided to change again. Then, until September 24, 2014, I kept changing OCs all the time, but after then, I finally decided TM shall be my permanent OC.

  • Appearance: She is a Pegasus, and I always wanted my OCs to be Pegasi (except trashed-out Pierce Goldeneye). Originally, she had a lightning bolt for a cutie mark, but after Timey Marey was decided, it turned into an hourglass. Her mane looks like Derpy's, but it came across because I couldn't look for that one mane (thankfully I did not settle on that ugly one) on the GZ Pony Creator, therefore settling on Derpy's. Her tail was just a random one I chose on the Pony Creator. The lavender color of her coat came exactly out of nowhere. I was only experimenting with MS Paint colors back then, lavender looked nice, so I chose that. The bright yellow mane then came when I forgot how her original hair color looked like, so I settled on that. The dark blue eye color came across, well, I just wanted to see the use of RGB 0,0,150, which I liked, so I settled on it.

  • Abilities: First, a BTTF-inspired pony. Then, a Knight Rider-inspired pony. And now, permanently, a James Bond-inspired pony. Yes, I chose her to be an 007 pony. Her cutie mark is an hourglass despite that she's an 007 pony, she actually is talented at horology. She's good at making clocks and hourglasses, and is also good at telling the time without the help of clocks, though she usually rounds it up.

  • Personality: Originally some heavily antisocial pony, who then became an 007 pony through development. She's warm and kind, but when she gets extremely annoyed, which is extremely rare for her, she gets into a fit of rage and expect her to use violence. Doesn't care about property damage or destruction. No no no, not based on James Bond, but I made it up. Therefore, it sums up chaotic good.

My OC is a reflection of me, albeit with some differences.

Appearance: Originally, Stone Cold was a unicorn from Valley Peak, a small town just south of Appleloosa. I had this idea of a pony who traveled while always wearing winter clothes, since the weather was always colder than his desert home. Of course, this changed when he was turned into a breezie.

Abilities: I love telling stories, and always thought it'd be cool to add effects to stories I told, including visiuals and sound effects. As such, Stone Cold's cutie mark is about story telling magic. He likes traveling around, looking for new ways to express these stories.

Personality: Since I'm pretty tall, I thought it would be funny to have my OC develop a napoleon complex after he was turned into a breezie.

I need some way to work through my emotional...stuff...so I crafted a version of myself and put him through symbolic representations of my own demons.

Well, my OCs are largely linked to my love of history, exploration, adventure, and archeology, and I tried to build their personalities and backstories based around this idea.

Pathfinder: Represents my love of maps.

Sojourner: Slightly inspired from Indiana Jones, is the representation of my love for archeology.

Corsair: Inspired from Sky Captain, I wanted a Pegasi, and I wanted to make him sort of a mercenary, if you will.

Stargazer: Wanted a Crystal Pony, wanted to a have a pony that could represent the history of the Crystal Empire.

Autumn: Wanted a deer OC, I loved the deer in the comics, and I wanted to connect her to my head-canon of Stagharta.

I wanted something to be know by, I don't like people knowing my own face. So I decided to create an OC so that people could add a face to the already existent voice and personality they knew. I took an old OC of mine... REALLY old, from my early days of OC creation and decided to change it. He was originally a Doctor Whooves knock off but was a unicorn with golden mane/tail and a dark green body. The original cutie mark was a cross-hair with a suppressor over it (yes I was a big fan of FPS games back then). So I took it and changed the colours... over and over and over and over again... I couldn't get it right... so I decided to focus on the look. I started researching mane and tail styles. Once I got those, the colours came straight away.
I ended up creating what I have today which is a white pegasus with bright blue and yellow swept back mane and tail (also known to have flat mane). The cutie mark is a connecting rod that is found connecting the wheels and cylinders on a steam locomotive. The name was harder, but I ended up naming him Rod, after the connecting rods... but I thought it was common and boring... so I started looking around and I found one of my favourite and native comedians Rhod Gilbert... so I took the 'H' and put it in my OCs name. Then my OC 'Rhod' was born (the name still relates to con-rods)!

My OCs are the results of a series of events happened during the 20th century, something like historical fiction, except more like a crossover with the Metal gear universe with pastel colored ponies. I noticed a pattern in most historical atrocities and the warfare around them - it has almost always been an endless struggle with Hatred, something us bronies are also dealing with on a fairly frequent basis. It is almost becoming a cycle, though I still need more time to figure out the specific steps, that is pretty much how my OCs are created. The story arcs of those OCs would probably require extensive research as they deal with sensitive historical events and themes.

post-18984-0-35092800-1430755678.gif The reason i made Cake was because i love cakes and am sure most bronies here love it too, so i decided to make one and its story is that was made by Pinkie and Twilight's magic

All ponies are my ponysone, divided by part of me, things to represent me
post-18984-0-64787100-1430271928.gif Violet is the closest pony to be called a ponysona she represent all my feelings, reactions, lonliness and ambitions

post-18984-0-84884600-1422141147.gif the idea of Soury is very simple, am mexican so any food from other country is something expensive here, one day a friend of my mom gave her a bottle of pickles, my mom gvie me one to try it and it was very delicious so i decided to make an OC that represent my favorite snack that is pickles

post-18984-0-35993800-1414723816.gif Void Nagatis represents my love for all magic and fantasy and scifi things, he is a sorcerer as powerful as Twilight when she had all alicorn magic

post-18984-0-43211000-1399339235.gif Finally Chatterbox, the origin of her is very simple, she represents my love for the Ask a Pony section, i really love to make questions to ponies so what else would be better than a journalist that works for newspaper and make interviews?

Well, Blue Moon originated when I wanted to make an OC to sorta represent me; I basically wanted an avatar. So, I decided to mess around with the Pony Creator, and on the third attempt in making a design, I was satisfied with what I made and Blue Moon was born. The name came before I made the third design, and I based the design off that.

Pony Creator Version of Bluey

I then made up a quick backstory for him, and created a personality that was based off mine.

However, his backstory called for a daughter and mother/wife, so I created two more OCs. Clear Skies (daughter)' history isn't too interesting and hasn't changed much.

Clear Skies

However, the wife/mother OC has a much more dynamic history. Originally, she was an green Earth Pony named Spearmint (see below).

Early prototype of Spearmint

Final version of Spearmint

However, I really hated her design and she wasn't a very fleshed out OC, so I decided to do away with her and replace her with an OC design I made a while ago that I really liked. I took that design, got some more art for it, made a cutie mark, and developed her character. Eventually, I had finished creating the character, Autumn, who has taken Spearmint's place. Autumn's character/personality is also heavily based off me; she mainly covers the aspects of my own personality that weren't covered in Blue Moon, along with some extra traits to help round it off.

well, i draw anime a lot. im trying to get good enough to write my own manga. but while i drew, (randomly, of course) one guy seemed to pop up more than the rest. i liked his spiked hair style, and the color was cool (white inside, black outside). he also wore a cloak, normally. thats how i came up with caliber's hair style. and where his cloak originated.

then, i came here. i wanted to go to a RP, but, you guessed it, i had no OC. i went to pony creator, and put in the hair, and cloak. but i still needed a coat color. since his hair was black-and-white, i decided to make his coat in between those colors. tah-da! his appearance was done! i liked the way grey looked on him.  :muffins:

as for abilities, i wanted something simple, yet powerful. i decided on the sword, because almost every anime has a swordsman that isn't OP, yet he still kicks a$$. also, the character that inspired him also commonly had a sword. his sword abilities adapted over time. now, unlike when he was first made, he isn't just "a really strong swordspony" anymore. iv explained why he's a good swordspony.  :proud:

as for the dark magic bit, i have jonas darkmane to thank for that. he gave me the idea while i was reading his OC's page.  ;)

his personality was originally supposed to be a "holier-than-thou" type deal, but that went out the window.  i think i sub-consciously added parts of my own personality to him, over time. as well as other traits and quirks. but he couldn't be perfect. so, i made him obnoxious at times, just like me.  :sunny:

i tried my very best to make him a good, fleshed out character. so, in his "other" part, i started adding little quirks. small tidbits, and it helped. they were only meaningless bits of info like "hates mango's". but it helped! i thought the quotes were a good add, too.

i came up with his backstory on the fly. but it slowly adapted the more i daydreamed while listening to songs. i think its rather good, now. good enough to write a fimfiction based on him.

so, in a way, caliber grew over time. he's grown into a rather good OC, way better then i thought he'd get. and as my first OC ever, he's grown on me, too.  :adorkable: time made him into the fine OC he is now.  :squee:

also, feel free to tell me what you think of him. :)

Kaymen blooblood originated as a sonic clone...yup, a lame sonic clone...then he evolved into a rooster, then a vampire, then into multiple versions... But he was just a sonic clone...with a spike coming out the top front of his head. Yup...cool...

I made my Ponysona because my original OC was.... bad..... very bad...

Snowflakey, marey-sueish, over-used grey/red/blue color scheme, stupid emo name... we're talking classic cringe-worthy OC here.

I made Hocus to be a real representation of me, and understandably, her color scheme matches my favorite colors (blue and pink). As for abilities, while magic is (arguably :comeatus: ) non-existent here on Earth, Hocus' magical talent represents my love of the supernatural... and the fact that if magic worked the same way on Earth as it does in Equestria, I'd study the everloving crap out of it! But most importantly, Hocus' magical ability represents the undying love that I hold for my friends, (after all, friendship IS magic!). Aaaaand lastly, her personality is of course based on me too :P

I created CC to give myself an idea of what I would look like in the MLP universe. I created him one late night while browsing the internet and stumbling upon the Pony Creator game. Even before that, I always envisioned myself as a Clydesdale due to my cultural background but I also wanted him to be a hybrid with unicorn blood because I also like unicorns and I am of mixed race. Plus, unicorns are the national animal of Scotland. In other words, I did it just for fun instead of for RP. In the present, my OC is in my Desktop background.

Candy Star is the embodiment of my brighter personality traits, but also has some of my most annoying traits as well. But amber suggested the colors she has now. Her mane and tail represent the colors of cotton candy, hence the first name. The second is her cutie mark which are star shaped konpeito(mexican candy) and represent the last Name "Star".

All these mix with her traits to make her unique and special.

how did you come across a thought for your OC/Ponysona? I'll go with my most drawn OC and one that I've been having the most fun with lately, Comet Cloudburster.

I came about the idea of wanting an OC by seeing other people making their own characters and I wanted my own. After flipping through a pony generator, I realized that I didn't like the concept of having a standard pony. I wanted to make her more alien and interesting so this led me to wonder what alien traits could I give her while still maintaining that she was a pony. Then it dawned on me to make her a cyborg made by some alien figure.

Appearance: This was honestly just me drawing random pony sections and just drawing parts of it unconventionally. I enjoyed the dual ear design, but what that caused was a difficulty in transitioning the ears to the head in terms of drawing so at first I just gave her some fluff under her ears, but it looked generally terrible, but it gave me the idea to make the antennae that shoot off from her head. That was all well and good, but I also wanted to change her eyes so I originally made them very much alien and inspired by Cteno's eyes by Slugbox. The rest of her body was pretty standard, that is until I hit the tail. I like bulkier tails than fluffy tails and I felt that the tail could very well be a source for uniqueness, so I made it into a prehensile tube... except I didn't want to just end it tapered or rounded. I wanted it to be really unique, so I made it into a flower that slowly was designed to be close to a lotus flower. Then I needed a reason for the flower and so I made it a generator for clouds and a propulsion system for her to break sonic rainboom speeds considerably.

Abilities: These were more centered after I designed Creator, my other OC. His intentions for making her into a cyborg became what her abilities would become. The cloud tail was to be used to hide her presence and to generate an improved acceleration over other ponies so in combat she'd be both stronger and faster. In her most recent of designs, she has sharpened wings and some armor plating.

Personality: I always enjoyed dual personalities so I thought of creating a conflict between her living side and her robot side. You had one side programmed to kill and destroy ponies for the service of the Consortium, and a lift over remnant of her old personality before she died as her biological side that enjoyed making cloud animals and enjoying living. When angered, she can lose control and the robotic part of her brain can take over and self defense mechanisms will kick in. This will either result in her using her tail as a smoke screen and fleeing, or her using her sharp wings to kill without mercy. She will have no recollection of the result of  her actions as she is programmed to immediately leave the scene no matter which decision her robotic brain feels is the best course of action.

Why: I made her just for fun. No real purpose other than that.

Other places: She is my current avatar for this website, but she's just fun to draw in general so she gets a bit of showtime on deviant art.
