How old are the ponies?

I think that Lauren Faust once said that they were supposed to be young adults, so early twenties seems fitting.

 

I'm not sure about their age, but all we know is that Fluttershy is a year older than Pinkie!

Also, I would tend to think that Rarity is the oldest and that Rainbow is the youngest.

I think they're in their early 20s as well. They're adults, they have their own jobs, they're independent, but they're still a bit immature, so... yeah. Early 20s makes sense to me.

It's hard to say, but I think that they would all be in the range of 18-25. In human years, of course.

 

From youngest to oldest,I would rank them as such:

 

Pinkie Pie (immature, lives in apartment, has parental figures)

Twilight Sparkle (still in college, hasn't quite developed social skills yet)

Rainbow Dash (has wild and fairly unrealistic hopes for the future)

Fluttershy (has a stable job and knows how to be polite in formal circumstances)

Applejack (runs a family business almost independently, is trusted by the town and society)

Rarity (completely independent, acts as a parental figure)

That's exactly the age order I imagine them to be. Rarity and Fluttershy just "feel" like the eldest. I would think of Pinkie as a little younger than Applejack except for Fluttershy's line about being (only) a year older than Pinkie.

I've always thought they were between 16 and 22. I'd say Rarity (22) > Applejack (20) > Twilight Sparkle (19) > Fluttershy/Rainbow Dash (18) > Pinkie Pie (17).

 

Mainly because Pinkie is the only one who seems to live with anyone (Mr. and Mrs. Cake). I don't know about everyone else, but it seemed to me in "The Cute Mark Chronicles", that Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy were in the same class, though I see that Fluttershy actually looks older than the others. It might just be an early growth-spurt, though, otherwise she'd be older than the rest of the mane cast, since they all have the same height, even as fillies. I dunno. Just my thoughts.

They feel to be in their early 20s, tho I have the idea that Applejack is the oldest (she was off to the city on her own in ...Chronicles). Going by calculation she was also the last of the Mane Six to get her cutie mark because she had to walk home first. Rarity also seemed to be living on her own in that episode, tho, so she could be older too.

But the idea that Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash are close to the same age also says something else. If Pinkie Pie is a year younger than Fluttershy that would also probably make her younger than Rainbow Dash. So maybe idea of Pinkie being the youngest are pretty accurate.

Rarity and Fluttershy are fairly obvious and it seems most of us are agreed on their placement, so I'll leave those alone.

 

Pinkie Pie's family, as shown in Cutie Mark Chronicles, is based off of the Amish. I've heard Amish girls are capable of leaving their families when they turn 16, so I'll assume Pinkie is either 16 or 17 (making Fluttershy either 17 or 18).

 

I was iffy with AJ and RD, but AJ seems to the more mature of the two, so I'd go with her being older. She's probably not too much younger than Pinkie, perhaps the same age, maybe even older. For now, I think she's younger though. Just because Pinkie acts goofy doesn't necessarily mean she's young. I've seen plenty of girls similar to Pinkie. The social, outgoing types are generally that way.

 

Twilight is at the bottom because, despite all her intelligence, she's very innocent. Best example would be Boast Busters. She's so afraid of looking like a showoff that she decides not to do anything. Generally that's how younger people think before they do something.

She shows a lot of courage and maturity when it's necessary, and she's readily accepted as a leader-type in Ponyville, such as when she disciplines Snips and Snails at the end of Boast Busters, or the way she's immediately accepted as organiser for Winter Wrap-Up.

 

I think the things that make her seem younger are more due to the fact that she's had a very sheltered upbringing - spending all her time in libraries and studying magic, and disdaining spending any time around other ponies, which makes her socially very inexperienced.

Perhaps, but she has her other moments (such as the famous "YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYES" moment and her obsession over slumber parties in Look Before You Sleep) where she goes into a giddy childlike manner.

 

Assuming Twilight as the 12 year old Faust referred to, 12 is probably the age where ponies gain enough respect to be treated like adults, hence why she was accepted as the organizer and could discipline Snips and Snails the way she did.

So basically, if they were human they'd all be in the 18-25 age category: young adults, Twilight being in college, Rarity and Fluttershy being graduate level in maturity and independence, and the others scattered around not far behind them. However, seeing as how they're ponies and age differently than humans, it is reasonable to cut that by several years because ponies don't generally live as long as humans do. And as was mentioned on the previous page, Lauren wanted to make them more relatable to kids.

 

But as far as we're concerned, relating them to ourselves, the 18-25 thing fits best.

I would say they're either teenagers or young adults.. The latter seems more fitting.

 

Here's my two cents on the ages of the mane six in order from oldest to youngest:

 

Rarity > Applejack > Fluttershy > Twilight > Rainbow Dash > Pinkie Pie

 

The fact that Pinkie is a year younger than Fluttershy kinda tells me she's the youngest of the lot, and her personality backs this up. Not to mention she had her birthday, which imo is basically her "catching up" to the others who are likely not too far apart age wise. I doubt that there's any large age difference amongst the mane six. With Twilight and Rainbow it's hard to say, but Twilight is more mature, so that's why I'd say she is older, and that kinda puts her in the middle somewhat. With Flutter an AJ it's debatable, but I just think AJ seems to be the older one. Those nicey nice characters like Fluttershy always seem young though, so who knows?

 

But saying Rarity is the oldest is likely a safe bet. ^^
