Luna's Banishment

All Luna wanted was for the ponies to appreciate the night, since the night was her hard work, and since Ponies generally sleep during the night, her work goes almost wasted. Sure her actions towards it were a little extreme, but she wanted some attention and appreciation... that's all.
Celestia banning Luna to the moon seemed a little too extreme for me... she didn't go soft on her sister... Do you know how long a thousand years is? Many many FiM marathons, if you ask me.
Am I just feeling too sympathetic for Luna or does anyone else share my thoughts?

Going into 'head canon based on show canon' territory here, but hear me out.
Luna and Celestia controlled the Elements of Harmony, as evidenced when they used them to defeat Discord.
Celestia used their power on her own to banish Nightmare Moon/Luna.
The Mane six used their power to destroy Nightmare Moon and free Luna.
Theory: It was as much as Celestia could do to banish her. With the co-owner of the Elements against her, she could only use half their strength. She carefully monitored her subjects, and seeing five of the six bearers in one place, announced the 1000th year Summer Sun Celebration in Ponyville, and sent the one she knew to be the final Element, knowing that only with full power could NNM finally be defeated.
It wasn't what she wanted, by any means, but it was all Celestia could do, and it had to be done.

Lauren Faust explains Nightmare Moon's banishment.
tl;dr, totally justified.

I like Lauren Faust's take on it, hopefully they don't mess with that.

You missed the part where the bitterness inside her turned her into a wicked mare of Darkness.

So you mean that, she was banished to the moon because Celestia alone could not defeat her, so she waited until the time was right to bring her back to her senses? If so, I believe I see it this way a little clearer
also, yes, I did forget the part about jealousy, my bad...
A good read, something I must have overlooked,

Well, I'm glad that doesn't ruin my head canon.

Well she does say not to take that as canon, that is her take on it but because it has never been mentioned in the show, the writers can easily make a different reason why.A good read, something I must have overlooked,
Whoops...

Eh. I think it's safe to presume that her intentions with Luna weren't exactly a secret amongst the staff, who would have no real reason to go with something else later on down the line. Especially when you consider that the her explanation above makes the most sense when you consider Celestia's overall character (ie benevolent ruler/loving sister).

Well yeah her explanation is perfect but you never know how willing writers are to butcher their own canon to add onto the storyEh. It really depends on the circumstances at the time, but I think Luna let her anger and jealousy literally posses her. Celestia wanted her sister back, but if she didn't so something, the world would be plunged into never ending darkness. I wonder if she had complete control over the elements when she used them.
I think what happened to Luna was tragic, but given the circumstances, it was justified.

Nope. Just saying it was kinda terrible they made that whole "I missed you sister from now on we'll rule together" thing at the end of season one episode two and just kinda forgot or 'banished' Luna until season two.Is there a reference I'm missing here?
Maybe we won't even see her again for another while after Nightmare Night.

Don't suppose you could throw that in some spoiler tags? That picture is mighty massive.
