I'd like to see a picture of ponies on one of these babies:

But the whole picture would have to be drawn...
Anyway, I'm thinking earth ponies in the EN (Equestrian Navy) would work upon ships like the one I just posted.

Have we ever seen the ocean in an episode? I can't vividly recall the sea ever receiving prominent attention. There are lakes and rivers, so a white-water navy is quite feasible. If Equestria is landlocked---and such a situation would be odd---then a large blue-water navy would be unnecessary for their purposes.

The presence of pegasi and their long-range flight capabilities arguably leaves the a large naval presence outmoded. The only reason they would have ships is to transport goods and land ponies, i.e., unicorns and Earth ponies.

tanks are cannon as far as i can tell, but what kind i dont know, though i like to think they use some kinda clean running T-72 or T-90

It's stange that we haven't had at least one beach episode. That a staple of "slice-of-life" tales.

As for Twilight, I'm sure we have a few Twilight fanboys who would love to see her at the beach.

Pegasi cant carry a lot of supplies and soldiers with them

They probably have Pegasi carriers, I'm sure Pegasi get tired in flying great distances, and it's nice to have a home base on the sea

If we assume that the pegasi air force can all perform sonic rainbooms, they should still have a good chance at getting to the enemy ships before being shot down.

You have a fair point, but if Equestria is land locked, there wouldn't be a problem.

tanks are 20th century, and rainbbow dash mentioned them, which means at lease WW1 or WW2 era destroyers or something of that nature could possibly be in equestria, but thats just me

The show goes really traditional with the military (note the guards wearing knight's armor) I would think if there was a Navy, it would have masted ships with sails, and would be made of wood, and armed with cannons. Then again, I always imagine Equestria as a landlocked state. Having no access to the ocean at all. So the military would have traditional knight's armor IMO.

This is how I picture Equestria as well.

And the traditional armour, and weapons does hint towards ~18th century ships, good point.

Oh and I should've mentioned, ponies can't drive, so tanks are useless if you can't operate it!
