Derpy offensive?

So I was just wondering, for those who find "Derpy" offensive why do you?

I respect your opinion completely I was just wondering why you did/do.

(I personally don't but that's just me.)

I don't want to start a fight but if one does breakout I WILL ask a mod to shut the thread down.

Oh the many threads about this topic...

What ever...

She is not offensive... "Derp" dose not mean retarded...

And her eyes are a lesson that you can't change who you are and you can't fix what your born with

She could be an idol if she's used in the right way... But we have soccer moms to Blame for not seeing in the way we do...

Her original voice is pretty offensive. That would be because some people with disabilities talk like that, and then crossing her eyes and giving her such a name is a bit too much. If she had a different name (Not Ditzy, but Ive heard Bright Eyes might be the original name, but my source isn't really that good.) then that would be fine (and preferably a better voice).

On another note, Derpy being cross eyed is fine. She's a cartoon character. It's the mixture that makes people find her offensive.

i find Snips/Snails to be more offensive then Derpy ever was. Shes cross eyed, clumsy, and has a speech impediment, that doesnt make her handicapped, yet Snails seems legitimacy slow and absent minded.

save Derpy!

Did anyone complain that Stimpy was an offensive characature of the mentally ill?

He was well.. avoiding PC bullcrap, mentally retarded. No ifs, ands or buts. Far closer to what people see as a stereotype of the mentally handicapped that Derpy could ever be.

I volunteered at a halfway house once for the mentally disabled. There was one kid who liked to show but didn't know about Derpy so i showed him "the last roundup".(with derpy's original derped eyed and original voice) He couldn't have been further from offended. When derpy spoke the 5 lines that she had his face lit up. He thought it was great that even "disabled" people or ponies were treated equally just as everypony else was I gave him the episode on a flash drive so he could watch it when he wanted. He ended up showing it to some of the other residents and they had the same exact idea he did. It was the greatest thing i had ever seen in my life. Soo many perfectly normal people were offended by Derpy, and the people that actually had any reason to be offended by it, loved it. At least in my experience it dosen't come down to the actual people that should be offended. Its the people who think they are protecting people. Or the overprotective soccer mom type that is just indulging her/his own prejudice, by being offended and by it and saying that it "Makes fun of mentally challenged people".

Yean, I think Derpy could be used to show that it's OK to be different, and that people like her CAN be a good contribution to society.

@sks Yes, I think snails is more offensive than Derpy. Heck, his cutie mark is a snal! It's like saying his talent is being slow! If that's not screaming out "I'm dumb!" than I don't know what is.

Derpy to me is not offensive in anyway possible, she is actually a very good symbol of the show. She is a pony that really makes our community stand out if anything. Derpy is something that brings our community together, when she made her first real appearance in the show we all celebrated together. But when her voice and eyes were changed, we all cried together as well. To be honest I don't see how anyone could think of her in a bad way any way possible. She is a cute background pony with adorable eyes, that's all.

Her voice though some people find offensive though. To me I don't mind the voice at all, but that is just me. There are a lot of people that I have met that did find her voice very upsetting to them. I find the voice though very sweet and silly. It's a cute little add to her character to my opinion.

Of course, everyone has their own opinion on Derpy with her eyes and voice. This is just mine. :)

XD ahh Snaips and snails, for those that didn't know Its a pun based on an old nursury rhyme stating that little boys are made of 'snips and snails and puppy dog tails' i think that might be why adults wouldn't find them offensive...snails being 'slimey and gross' and therefore of interest to little boys, not because they're low....just putting that in there..

I had a mentally retarded sister (she passed away a long time ago), and I honestly find nothing offensive at all about Derpy. She wasn't created to poke fun at demented people, she was created on accident and become a phenomenon within the fandom. That's it. There's no deeper meaning behind her crossed eyes and silly voice. Like @ said, it can even be thought of as a symbol of perseverance. I've always loved Derpy as a background character, and it's a shame that they've had to keep her more distant now due to overly-sensitive people getting their panties in a bunch.

It really is a shame that people are getting the wrong idea about Derpy, I have said this many times on this forum and I will say it again she is a missed opportunity to reach out to fans who are disabled or just seen as different. I had this one coworker once who had eyes much like Derpy and she did not have any other issues I am aware aside from the eyes and not everyone that has a speech impediment is mentally retarded.

Offensive characters never show up in TV. nope! Ren and stimpy  The Simpsons *cough* If they want to remove derpy  then this whole thing could be viewed as the exact opposite of "It's okay to be different"  it's more like  "It's not okay to be different and disabled people have no place in society"

I love Derpy.  In fact, I watched something a while back about the writer of the Derpy episode and she has a child with those issues.  That says it all to me.  There's no way she meant anything negative when she wrote it and even before I knew that, I loved the character.  Even went out and bought a Derpy figure for my desk...

My Little Pony is about accepting everypony.. but apparently ponies with crossed eyes or ponies who are clumsy is offensive and must be terminated. Wat.

Therefore, no, I don't find Derpy offensive.

Let's start by saying that the show was meant for little girls. Not for us. For them Derpy is just funny. Like a cartoon should be.

Second: No. Derpy is not, in any way, offensive. She does not get discriminated or anything. I don't think people should think too much about this. She is just a character from a cartoon and was probably meant to be 'just funny' without giving direct implications to people with disabilities.

Derpy rules. And she sees 25.62 times more than we do, so who's talking about disabilities?!

I really don't think she is offensive at all. I really don't see why people are making such a big deal about her. While I do love Derpy Hooves of "Ditzy Doo", I feel like she is a little overrated, I don't think it matters. She was never supposed to be offensive. I've never heard anyone say Derpy's "Retarded".

I didn't and don't find Derpy offensive.  However, I can say that when I heard the original voice in The Last Roundup, I was very surprised that they let it through.  To me, it did sound rather stereotypical and I'm not exceptionally surprised that people blew up about it.  Do I think it was right for them to make such a big deal about it? No, but that doesn't mean that it didn't surprise me when they did.

Derpy is adorable, and thats reason enough to keep her around.

they could do alot with her character, if they care enough to try and save her. why not cut any future speaking roles and just give her some comic relief bits? i was actually kinda bummed when Rainbow Dash's Wonderbolt letter wasnt delivered by Derpy, they could have easily gave her a harmless cameo where she didnt talk (maybe just stood there with the letter in her mouth, etc). she could easily be openly inserted into backgrounds, eating muffins, chillin with her friends, etc.

heres an idea, Rarity could give Derpy some etiquette lessons, teach her how to be graceful. its a longshot, but i can be hopeful that they dont completely shitcan her character.

That is a good idea it develops Derpy's character which has the most untapped potential of any background pony and show a bit of Rarity's positive traits which they don't show nearly enough. I might steal this and incorporate it into this Derpy fanfic I am working on.

It is only offensive when you MAKE it offensive. Nothing about Derpy really made her offensive. If she would of  said "O DA IMZ RETARD HUHUH" yeah, I could see that being offensive, but she didn't.  Though people still find her mistakes/voice offending, and I'm not going to change their minds, nor hate on there opinions. It all just depends on the person.

i wouldnt want them to try and fix the way she talks, since thats part of her character and it would give the wrong impression to people who watch the show. you can fix clumsy though, just gotta send her to pony finishing school.

hell, give her a storyline where shes trying to impress somepony, and goes to Rarity for help. maybe she feels insecure about herself and wants to do something about it. we're all felt like that at some point, and they could work with that idea if they wanted to flesh her out a little more.

I completely agree with this statement i think it would be a bad thing if they got rid of Derpy now in my opinion getting rid of Derpy seems to be telling people it's not okay to be different and if you're different you should stay out of public view. :(
