Meteors, Sonic (Rain)booms and atmospheres, oh my!

I fail to see a topic about this, yet. What's wrong with you people? Probably too fixated on freaking out about certain season finales happening tomorrow to post topics about this stuff.

Witnessing a sonic boom from a meteor going through the upper atmosphere would be fairly bad-ass, just sayin'. Just stand in the middle of field where there's no glass or doors to hit you. You may get knocked off your feet if you're close enough but at least you wouldn't get skewed.

That meteor did look pretty scary for something that just blew up out of the sky one day.  I would hate to have just been walking down my hall and have a window burst on me.  I would never trust glass again.

Okay, that was pretty bad ass looking when it was falling and that sonic boom....but yeah, sad that many got injured though. I feel really bad for them. But honestly, I would've loved to see a meteor or meteorite do that, but hit some place where no one got injured.

Prayers for you Russians that got injured!! :(

Yeah, some of those vids that have been posted of the blast were pretty sick, and that shockwave, hot dang, that was legit!!!  Best wishes and God's blessings to any Russians injured from the blast; hope ya'll heal up quickly and aren't too grievously injured!  :)

First and foremost, RIP Headphone users, this is a loud noise.

It was pretty amazing this was all captured on camera and with social media, it spread quickly. There was something on the news about meteors being visible in the US by noon. (I was inside all day).

Oh well, If I had PS, let alone more experience with PS, I would've shopped it and made the smoke rainbow and put Dashie at the front.

IRL Sonic Rainboom! :D

I saw this earlier today.

God help the Russians, our Slavic brothers and sisters.

No time for jokes here, over 500 people are injured and over 200 hospitalised.

...and the Americans are making Rainboom jokes *facepalm*

The asteroid, about 45 meters across, gave the world quite a scare today.

http://edition.cnn.com/2013/02/15/us/asteroid/?hpt=hp_c1

"If it had hit our planet -- which was impossible -- it would have done so with the energy of 2.4 megatons of TNT, Yeomans said. This is comparable to the event in Tunguska, Russia, in 1908."

Scary stuff. That's not even mentioning the second, unrelated asteroid that impacted in Russia today.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/15/meteorite-streaks-across-russian-urals_n_2691904.html

The rock exploded approximately 15 miles above the surface. Over 1000 people were injured when debris shattered windows and fragments over the Urals.

Hopefully what we can take away from all this is that space programs are essential to our survival as a species. We need to be able to take preventative action when faced when these kinds of events.

Thoughts?

I saw a video of this today, it was really interesting. It looked like the sun at first, though. I wonder what WOULD've happened if it had hit the Earth.

Your topic, 'Asteroid 2012 DA14 made a record-close pass today -- 17,100 miles -- by Earth' has been merged with my own topic regarding the meteor fiasco :3

Well since, it would be awesome to see a Sonic Rainboom from space I would really like to see that. The meteor that hit Russia, was no the meteor that will circle around because of the Meteor showers. No harm, done yet.

I saw that earlier today, pretty neat. I wonder how it felt to get hit by the blast...

Also, I feel bad for the injured folks, and if anyone was killed.

It was basically your standard overpressure wave. It's the same wall of force regardless of whether an asteroid, bomb, volcano, or exploding chemical plant causes it.

More seriously, this should be a wake-up call. This kind of stuff actually happens and we have to deal with it. Granted, this was a little asteroid, but there's lots larger ones that'll be coming our way some day. We ought to throw a few billion dollars at have a system ready to go when we need it.
