Hi! If you tried to access PonyBGM.com, well... it no longer exists, I'm sorry to say. Or rather, it does, but it's been taken offline and it will now redirect you here instead.

InfinityDash (my friend and BGM collaborator) registered the domain for the site back in October 2011. Life circumstances have caused him to become extremely busy for the past few months now, unfortunately; because of this, he did not wish to renew the domain come mid-October of 2012. The site was under a very lengthy hiatus and because he had full control of it, it wasn't being updated very often and it might as well have been sitting on the web collecting e-dust.

We agreed to transfer PonyBGM.com to Feld0 (the site owner of this message board, MLPForums.com) rather than let it expire, to be potentially taken by someone else. Feld0 is a great friend of mine and we have been buddies since before these message boards opened back in October 2011. I have plans to reboot PonyBGM.com into an entirely new website sometime in the future, though I have no idea when that will be, as I am very busy extracting BGM and managing my own life as well.

This is my way of contributing to the Friendship is Magic community - by extracting the show's background music and sharing it via YouTube. I'm one of four people (that I know of) who does frequent BGM ripping - the other three are InfinityDash (my partner and collaborator), MrNewbyNewb, and Wingbeat Pony. Links to their YouTube channels are at the bottom of this post.

Infinity, Newb, and Wingbeat have extracted more of the show's music than I have, though I tend to focus more on quality rather than quantity; I spend a lot of time finding methods to take out as much of the dialog and sound effects as I can. For the purpose of musical substance and listenability, I also edit and compile short cues together on a case-by-case basis; the download versions of music tracks may be presented in a different manner from their YouTube video counterparts.

Fantastic work, these rips are great quality, It can be difficult to find good quality rips which are purely background music, as with allot of them you can still faintly hear the characters voices.

Listening to these really makes you appreciate the level of detail that's put into the background instrumentals, and how the music is synced to match not only the mood of the scene, but also complements the main characters expressions and actions.

Awesome work Senn, look forward to hearing more great BGM rips from you as season two progresses.

I don't usually do this, but... does anyone have anything to request that they'd like to see ripped?

It's not that I don't have a wealth of other music from the show to extract, but I often can't decide what I want to rip next. I thought about tackling the entire Smartypants montage from Lesson Zero, but I'm kind of burnt out on ripping things that are longer than five minutes (as I've done before with the two lengthy suites from Boast Busters); those take a long time to go through to swap and copy/paste channels around (to get rid of SFX/dialogue), to remove lengthy periods of silence, and present the download mp3 in a somewhat musically listenable format. If there's enough demand for it, however, I may reconsider.

Bear in mind I'm a very busy guy, and as such, I won't be able to get your request done immediately, or even promise that I'll take on a specific piece of music. These things take a lot of analyzing and self-labor - though I am curious to know if you guys have anything you'd like to see happen.

Rip #12 is pretty much finished, though I am now waiting on Infinity to make the video file and send it to me, and he's been gone on a family outing for nearly a week. (I'm still using a six year old laptop with Windows XP and 1GB of RAM; not enough memory to render and process video files, unfortunately, which is why I rely on Infinity to do those for me)

Just kidding, heh. I'd make a request, but I'm having a very hard time choosing something. There's so much good music in the show. I've managed to narrow my choices down to 2:40-7:40 in Fall Weather Friends (which covers the entire Iron Pony Competition), but even that's a full five minutes. It's not a five-minute piece, though - it's just five minutes of the show that happen to have a few fantastic BGM tunes in them. But still...

I'd be happy to help you out with video work, by the way, if you can't wait for Infinity to return. I've got a beast of a workstation that can crunch out videos (or anything, for that matter) in no time.

Oh, by the way, this topic belongs in Show Discussion, since you didn't write the music it's about. Moved it for you.

I appreciate the assistance, though I'd rather Infinity do it for me since he makes these banners that he adds on to the beginning of every video. It helps prevent others trying to take these videos and claim them as their own (unfortunately, the one video that doesn't have a banner was my first rip, and likely my most popular. Someone actually took this video and uploaded it to their channel without giving credit, and he hasn't been online since July. -___- ).

Rip #13 is going to take a while - I got attacked by Malware on Friday evening, which forced me to reformat and reinstall Windows. I didn't lose any data, fortunately, so I can resume where I left off starting tomorrow.

I'm a one-pony marching band trying to get this one done... and yes, that's a very obvious hint. (someone already ripped this one back in April, but it's in dire need of improvements)

Being unable to find a job in this economy is a big factor in obtaining spare time. I'm also dedicated to doing this in general as I have several years of audio ripping and editing experience under my belt (though I'm no professional audio engineer). As I have written on my YouTube profile:

"The source of my music rips comes from the 720p WEB-DL iTunes encodings of every season one episode in .mkv format. The audio there is encoded in 5.1 surround with most of the dialogue and sound effects contained in the center channel."

In these iTunes encodes are six separate audio channels - front left, front right, center, back left, back right, and subwoofer/bass. I usually work with the front surround channels when doing these music extractions. Nothing is ever completely contained in one channel - that's just the way the audio is encoded (for instance, you will usually hear offscreen sound effects and dialog in the surround channels rather than the center channel).

For programs, I use Audacity 1.3 beta (plus the FFmpeg library which allows me to import .mkv video files) for extraction, and Sony Sound Forge for when I do my audio editing work - mixing, fade-ins, fade-outs, muting, adding silence, normalization, etc. - all basically just to improve the audio for listening and to present it all in a suitable manner.

I really liked the background music that played in season 1 when the CMC had that montage about trying to earn their cutie marks. I find myself listening to it over and over again while studying or playing video games. I have a strong admiration for Daniel Ingram as well as all the others who help make the music for MLP:FiM. Such great songs that fit the mood perfectly and are very diverse in types.
