So far the short of Rainbow Dash competing against Trixie in a guitar contest, brings up the possibility that the main group may use magic to help them win. Rainbow Dash did use magic to enhance her playing to beat Trixie, but that would mean RD couldn't beat her opponent on skill/talent alone.

So the question is up in the air of the main group using magic in a competition against their non-magic opponents.

It's the Elements of Harmony. Even though they don't have their necklaces, they can still unleash their full potential, sort of like Dragonball Z.

which brings up the question, what does that teach little kids?

you won't win unless you're a chosen one?

Their magic came from the Elements of Harmony. Some of the shorts like Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy has shown them capable of using their magic in conjunction with their music playing. Just that RD used it to win a challenge against a non-magic opponent.
