I see a lot of members who think one of the mane 6 got worse/better during the current season.

What's your opinion?

Personally, I think Pinkie Pie was a bit funnier, and less mean during the first seasons.

However, I find Rarity is getting better and better. :D

Rarity definitely got a better rep,

Twilight had less screen time as a princess,

Pinkie pie is still unexplainable,

Rainbowdash had some background unfold,

Applejack, well I guess she was given a bit of a better rep,

And Fluttershy is still used as same old Fluttershy

I'm the same as most people, I think this season has been good to Rarity and Applejack, and bad for Rainbow and Twilight (just because of lack of screen time in Twilight's case).

Pinkie has been so inconsistent that I didn't want to go either way. Episodes like Pinkie Apple Pie make me love her, episodes like Filli Vanilli make me hate her.

Good - AJ, Rarity, and Pinkie Pie.

Despite a few notable(and actually pretty bad) hiccups(A Leap of Faith, Simple Ways, and Filli Vanilli respectively), it's been a top notch season for them

Bad - Rainbow Dash and Twilight, but more so for RD

It took them 20 episodes with Testing for the writers to actually do something good with them(and together coincidentally). That's absolutely ridiculous, and in Twilight's case, starting fairly good with a great open only for them to do nearly jack-shit with the momentum is pretty disappointing. Yeah, they had like 1 episode each where they were good supporting characters(Flight to the Finish and Twilight Time respectively), but outside of that was practically nothing, and in RD's case, a lot of royal f***-ups when it came to her actual focus episodes. I pray to God that they don't repeat the same mistakes in S5

The big shift came with the CMC who are finally finally making strides.

But yes they have really hurt paint bucket this time around...  Can you be character assassinated twice?

  • Better for Applejack and Rarity. Actually, it was fantastic season for them! They learned a lot, but also helped others learn something and had some very memorable scenes, songs and expressions  :) Not only they had a lot of screentime, but they also proved that they're real and believable characters. They make mistakes, of course, but it's what makes them real and interesting. And episodes like Simple Ways, Generosity or Leap of Faith showed how much they changed through the series. Real character development.

  • Worse... Fluttershy. And Twilight. Let me explain.

Twilight: she became sooooo boring. I always loved her, because she was so different compared to main characters from other shows, books, etc. But now? Her conflicts are predictable. She lost her adorkable charm. Most of time she was there just to show other characters that they're wrong. And I don't like it. It's not even that she was badly written. Just... I'm not sure if there's something what would really surprise or interest me in her anymore, but there's still the season finale, so maybe it will change my opinion.

Fluttershy: The only episode about her, in which I really liked her was Filli Vanili. It was something new, interesting and while it was rather predictable - I liked the fact that we had a chance to see a new side of her :) Her passionate side, which she kep hidden for so long. It was nice, really nice and it was very good episode with strong moral. But after 'Trade Ya' I seriously lost hope. You know, most of people complained about Rainbow's behaviour, but I actually had no problem with her, especially considering that she did everything in her power to fix her mistake. I had a problem with Fluttershy. I'm just going to quote my post from the topic with discussion about 'Trade Ya' episode:

Okay, I thought about it and in some way it was "Bats!" and "Putting Your Hoof Down" all over again. Fluttershy's fans are probably going to hate me, but how many times exactly will she agree to do something she doesn't feel comfortable about? In my opinion, she was as much her "fault" as Rainbow's. And I'm kinda dissapointed how this episode turned out, because it was a good occasion to deliver a lesson that people should love themselves more than others, if they want to be respected and truly loved. Actually, while a lot of people already said that Rainbow was selfish and stupid, I was more annoyed by Fluttershy's actions. She reminds me of wifes of alcoholics, who believe that their love will help their husbands and someday they'll just quit drinking. But you know, it almost never works like that. "I love you, so I'm going to do everything for you. Our love will be a medicine for everything"... I'm sorry, but HOW letting my friend trade me for some book is a good example for little girls? How is it an example of being a good friend? Her reaction for Rainbow's actions was just unbelievable. It reminded me of people, who are manipulated or kids, who are to naive to see the world how it is.

Since the beginning of season 2 Fluttershy is becoming more and more boring and just badly written character for me. Yeah, she had some good episodes in the last 2 seasons, but in the end they all where about the same things and I didn't learn anything really new about her (the only episode who actually let me know something new was 'Filli Vanili', I knew that she likes to sing, but not that it means so much for her). She started to be more assertive, but the really small amount of writers seem to actually acknowledge that fact. It's not even Fluttershy's fault. More like bad writing. I hope the next season will be better for her...

I'm not a big fan of Flutters and I really hoped this season will change it at least a little. But it looks like it only made it worse. She didn't really do anything new or memorable. I'm sorry, but being cute and kind is too little to make an interesting character.

I think that AJ and Rarity did very well this season, helping others and learning to overcome more obstacles in their lives.

As for worse, Fluttershy did really good in Filli Vanilli, but then we saw how she was in the Breezies episode. Still a good character, just not very interesting.

I'm surprised with Rainbow Dash's results. :o

But yeah, during the last 2 episodes, she wasn't that great.

And apparently, the Rarijack ship became popular thanks to this season. :)

I nominated Twilight for "better" because of how she is handling the implications of her newfound status, also Pinkie and Rarity for their great key episodes and well-defined characterization.

At the same time, I also rated Pinkie alongside Rainbow Dash for the worst. Unfortunately, outside of her focus episodes, the writers tend to resort to Flanderizing some of Pinkie's basic traits ("Filli Vanilli" being the best example) to the point that she becomes an annoying and unlikable character. Ditto for Rainbow Dash, but this also extends to her key episode, which, all the more unfortunately, may be the most challenged episode of the season. Her perceived arrogance was played up so often that it has turned too many people away from her.

This I say as a fan of Rainbow Dash, we are unfortunately not seeing the same Rainbow Dash from "Hurricane Fluttershy", "Wonderbolts Academy", or "Sleepless in Ponyville".

Rarity hasn't really changed too much, she's just grown as a character, but, hey, the circle-clop of Rarity hate has all but vanished, so I'll chalk this up as a W for Princess Marshmallow Jewel Butt :D

Also, Pinkie and RD have always been duking it out with each other for not being in last place of my mane 6. I like them both, but they're not really relatable/nor as interesting to me as the other characters. This season really hasn't done much to push either of them out of last -_-

Of course, Pinkie has had 2 great episodes in Maud Pie and Pinkie Pride, and RD's only shining moments this season (in my opinion) were in "Testing, Testing, 123"

RD's episodes have always felt high in quantity, but low in quality, and this season has done nothing to change that. Also, seeing how weak her fanbase has gotten (she got STOMPED by AJ in the MLPF World Cup tourney this year) I'd have to say this season has been damaging to her and her fanbase.

So, Rarity with the win, RD with the loss :D

I'm the exact opposide, the last two episodes are probably the best she's been this entire season(though that's not saying much though)

Definitely bad for Rainbow Dash, Twilight, Fluttershy, and Pinkie Pie.

Pinkie's character seems to be less happy and naively innocent to more obsessively cruel in episodes like 'Filli Vanilli', 'Trade Ya', and 'Bats!' (along with everyone else except Fluttershy in the episode).

Unfortunately,Rainbow Dash doesn't seem to have improved at all either, in fact she seems to have backtracked SIGNIFICANTLY in terms of character development; in 'Rainbow Falls' and 'Trade Ya'

Twilight seems to be all over the map in terms of her princess status and role as designated leader of the group; in the premiere she claimed that she didn't believe to be better than anyone else, but in 'Rainbow Falls' her lecture to Dash come across as condescending, in 'Three's A Crowd' she returns to the mentality she had during the premiere, in 'Twilight Time' she seems relatively unperturbed by the foals wanting to study with her, whereas in 'Trade Ya' she is greatly annoyed and embarrassed by it, which is even more confusing since all of the attention did not bother her during the Season 3 finale.

Fluttershy, like Twilight is all over the place with her progress forgetting and relearning both how to deal with her anxiety and not being such a doormat frequently in 'Bats!', 'Filli Vanilli', 'It Ain't Easy Being Breezies', and 'Trade Ya'.

The only one who feels relatively unchanged is Applejack.

The two that seemed to have improved the most are Rarity.

Rarity has been shown to be more selfless this Season and a more accurate portrayal of her element as best shown in 'Rarity Takes Manehattan'.

For those of you who said Dashie has had horrible episodes this season, Testing, Testing, 123 would like to have a word with you :umad:

Most people have been saying that it was easily her best episode of the season. But despite that, most have also been saying that the season as a whole has been unkind to her, despite one good episode

I've actually like all her episodes this season, I don't think any are bad. Call me a fanboy if ya want, but I have genuinely enjoyed every episode of her's this season.

There's nothing wrong with liking her S4 episodes, as I do think there are plenty of things to like about them. But personally I can't help but feel disappointed with them(with the exception of Testing), especially with the momentum S3 gave her(which I think is easily her best season)

I'm not expecting top quality for them all, but DD and RF left quite a bit to be desired imo

I don't rank the episodes really, I just enjoy them for what they are. Bronies seem to be overanalyzing every episode to ridiculous levels, and it's beginning to get nitpicky and stupid.

Rainbow dash seems to have evened out a little as a character. Not much growtj, just more consistency. She is still jumpin back and forth between actually cool and actually terrible, but the jumps are not so huge. She just has a little more consistency.

Pinkie has been pinkie. Some background development, information regarding her character, but not very much growth or change.

Applejack is one of the characters to have actually grown a bit. She was put our of her element a few times, and did have to geode a little bit to handle them.

Rarity has been inconsistent. And whiny. I'm sorry, but I do not like her very much. However she did have her good moment, which I guess gives hope for the future....

Flutters....just...blank. One little spot of growth in filli vanilli. And then nothing. Just like her character, unless we find out something really interesting in her background, there's nothing else that can be done, really.

And twi....hmm. Idk, they haven't taken the whole princess thing to the heft we expected. And now twi is boring. Shes there to be the celestia, and it's very annoying. Hopefully she'll get a whole legacy, princess thing or something, becuase if not she will probably continue passionately being very boring.

If you wouldn't mind, I feel an explanation is in order here :D

I haven't seen anything notably out of place with her, and this has been lauded as her best season so far! :D

So...can you give me an explanation as to why you'd throw out such allegations?

Well, this might seem biased, since I have never had a particular likeness for rarity, but to me she's just been...idk, not very satisfactory....I liked her in filli vanilli, but for the rest of he season so far she has been that over dramatic fashionista, and if that's a good thing for some peopel, good for them. But I have found her pretty annoying when she acts like that, and I guess what I mean is that I was hoping for something a little more unique. Which has happened a little during this season, but not very often...

Rarity I think has had the best season. She has grown as a friend, as a pony, and as a sister. Even though she is still my least favorite pony, I like that she is becoming more than just a whiny, spoiled character.

Rainbow Dash still holds herself back by being stubborn and hardheaded, but she has had some of the best episodes in my opinion.

Pinkie Pie needs to tone everything down. You can be a clown and hyper, but when everyone scolds you for picking on your friends and for doing things against their will... then you need to think about yourself.

Twilight Sparkle is now the most boring character. She doesn't seem to do ANYTHING anymore. I know the show has tried to become a 6 main pony show... but you have to admit that Twilight is supposed to be THE main character. Ever since she became a princess... she has become dull and lifeless. Bring back season 2 Twilight.

Fluttershy has changed for the better. She is slowly becoming more confident in her own self and her abilities. She stood up to the breezies, became a singer (pinkie still leaves a bad memory for this episode), BUT is still her same character of being reserved and shy. Its one thing to grow, but another thing to bring it all back to what you were originally meant to do.

Applejack has had too much screen time and has changed so many times as a character. Cold and heartless to discord, over protective to her sister, distrustful without proof (even though she was right) of Flim and Flam, and brutally honest to her friends. Also her family has had more screen time than is needed on my opinion.

Spike has become a joke. Everything spike does is to make fun of his situation. "I made a lot of food for all the fillys. Oh, it isn't needed anymore. I wasted all my time doing that, laugh at me." "Oh look, I caused the breezies to be knocked off course, scold me." "I almost dropped my comic into the mud, Twilight save me!" "Oh Rarity is oblivious to my love for her... feel awkward and bad for me." Spike needs an episode where he grows up (I know he is a kid, but he hasn't always been this useless) and everyone takes him for granted instead of looking down on him.

All of the other character likes Discord, Trixie, Derpy, Celestia, Luna, Shimmer(?), Bulk Biceps, The Mayor, Braeburn and the Bison, Maud (she is fairly new so that can be excused) Shining Armour, Cadence, Snips and Snails (have they even been in this season?) The Cake Family and their babies, Zecora, Gilda, and any other pony who has had an impact on the actual show need more screen time too. You can't just introduce a character and then abandon them.

What do you guys and gals think?

Unfortunately, all you're seeing is the over-dramatic fashionista. There's SO much more to her that you're leaving out :D

Remember in "Rarity Takes Manehattan," when she ran out of the fashion show to try and mend her mistakes she had made with her friends?

She did the exact same thing in "Sweet & Elite," shunning high-society, a.k.a. the ponies she'd wanted to fit in with since the pilot episode (and it'd be safe to assume well before that), for her friends; her friends who weren't part of her dream to be one of the Sweet & Elite.

That's the kind of pony she is at heart; she's not just some over-dramatic fashionista, she's a great friend who will do what's right, even if it's not necessarily what she wants. She's also extremely passionate; her head is always in the clouds, metaphorically speaking, but she works like hell to make her dreams come true. The pure passion and drive she has is astounding, and something that we all could learn from, myself included.

Also, if you're STILL not convinced she's not like other characters of her archtype, I'd recommend giving this a read; it's something I stumbled across a long while back that I think hits the nail on the head, whether or not the grammar is good.

I'll go ahead and share it with you, spoilering for length...

Rarity is Generous:

 S01E01: Friendship is Magic

Gives Twilight a free makeover after Rainbow Dash messed up her mane.

S01E02: Friendship Is Magic

Cuts off her tail to give a monster or something the missing half of his mustache.

S01E11: Winter Wrap Up

After Twilight did a horrible job making a nest, she spent all of her time trying to fix her friend's mistake, putting her horribly behind quota.

S01E14: Suited For Success

Made all of her friends dresses for the gala free of charge, and they kept complaining about how they looked and how they wanted them to look, which made her dresses look horrible in front of some huge name in the fashion business.

S01E16: Sonic Rainboom

When Twilight wanted to try out a new spell that she had never done before and warned it could have possible side effects if botched, Rarity readily subjects herself to the spell, so she can go cheer on Rainbow Dash at her flying competition.

S01E20: Green isn't Your Color

Keeps quiet about her jealousy of Fluttershy's newfound fame in the fashion business, something she had been trying to accomplish before the show even started. After Fluttershy stumbles and trips on the runway and the crowd turns against her, Rarity begins cheering to save her friend, despite feeling it should've been her making it big instead of Fluttershy.

S01E25: A Party of One

Purposely ruins her mane, which she's extremely proud of, in order to keep Pinkie's surprise party a secret.

S02E05: Sisterhooves Social

After making a mistake in the way she took care of her sister, she hid IN MUD in order to complete a race with her sister for forgiveness, when all and all, it was just siblings fighting over trivial matters, like EVERY siblings do.

S02E08: Mysterious Mare Do Well

Makes 4 costumes for her friends to wear in their mission of bringing a borderlining on narcissism Rainbow Dash back down to earth.

S02E09: Sweet & Elite

When it came down to it, she chose her unsophisticated Ponyville friends over the Canterlot Ponies, who she had dreamt of fitting in with.

S02E10: Secret of My Excess

Spares the feelings of a horny baby dragon who stole half of the city and kidnapped her, even going as far to kiss him on the cheek.

S02E14: The Last Roundup

Rides a damn whatever you call that thing all the way back to Ponyville with an extremely repetitive Pinkie Pie due to Rainbow Dash's negligence.

S02E19: Putting Your Hoof Down

Tries helping Fluttershy learn how to stand up for herself, and welcomes Fluttershy back after she attacks her dreams.

S02E21: Dragon Quest

Attempts to stand up for Spike when the other 5 laugh at his apron. Creates a huge costume so RD, Twilight and herself could follow him to make sure he was alright. Stands directly behind Rainbow Dash's flank the entire time they're hiding, without complaining. Prepares to fight dragons in yet another attempt to stand up for Spike.

S02E25: A Canterlot Wedding

Makes a ton a fricken' dresses for the wedding, free of charge.

S03E01: The Crystal Empire

In order to buy time for Twilight, makes a bunch of hats and shit out of hay and straws. Does a very good job at it, I might add.

S03E12: Games Ponies Play

Takes the extremely difficult job of preparing Cadence's mane in the intricate detail it had to be done in, with only 15 minutes of time left. Also does a good job.

(Note: Rarity got screwed in Season 3. I assure you Season 4 will be different.)

Equestria Girls:

Makes dressed for them to all wear to the dance free of charge. Helps clean up the gym so Twilight could when the crown that night, despite hating messes. After Sunset Playdough-Hair ruins Twilight's reputation, tries helping Twilight go incognito until it can be fixed. Share her idea and Wondercolt's costume with the rest to change Twilight's horrid reputation.

From Vocabulary.com:

Generosity is a quality that's a lot like unselfishness — someone showing generosity is happy to give to or share time, money, food, or whatever with others.

Generosity is a quality — like honesty and patience — that we all probably wish we had more of. When you show generosity, you might give away things or money or put others before yourself. But generosity is about more than cash and stuff. When you're forgiving and gentle to people, you show generosity of spirit. If you give others help or credit, that shows generosity. The world would certainly be a better place if more people showed generosity to others.

That's a lot of good deeds. If you expect the ponies to represent their elements every episode, and if you dislike them for not doing so, you should really only be a Twilight and a Pinkie fan, in my opinion.

NEXT.

Rarity can be vain and shallow.

Rainbow Dash can also be shallow (Yeahh, you can be my pet, but only if you fly!), and instead of vain, arrogant.

Twilight Sparkle can be too obsessive.

Applejack can be stubborn and far too competitive.

Pinkie lacks seriousness and is socially imbalanced.

Fluttershy is also socially imbalanced and her shyness makes her a pushover.

So...they all have flaws. Big whoop. It's what makes them good characters. If you dislike a pony for her flaws, fine, but be careful with the way you word it; it can offend people. (I wrote a whole blog about this, I think.)

NEXT:

Interest in Fashion...

(You get the picture :D )

So, with me throwing all of that out there, tell me, do you really think this season has been a drastic change for her?

I don't, to be blunt. I think people are just starting to notice how she's truly been all along in Season 4, although she's grown quite a bit since season 1, I will say, but she's still the same fashionista who's just as beautiful on the outside as she is on the inside  :D

Rarity was never some spoiled aristocrat; she could be demanding and whiny at times, but beneath that white coat lies a heart of pure gold ;) Flaws make a character great. That's why people complain about Mary-Sues so much :D In Rarity's case, they're part of what makes her such a great character, and it's always been that way :D

You just have to look past the negative stereotypes and tropes her character type bears to see that she's nothing like the other fashionistas out there ;)

Makes a ton a fricken' dresses for the wedding, free of charge.

Good points. I forgot that she has done so much good for her friends. To be honest, I never completed the episode where she tries to fit in with the elite ponies. I shall go do that now.

To me, Fluttershy has improved quite a bit during this season, most notably in Filli Vanilli...Which is probably my fave episode this season. She's learning to be naturally assertive and stand up for herself, instead of being a doormat. Her key episode was kinda meh, but she did learn something in it. In testing 123, she broke up the argument RD and Twi were having. She made me proud there. As well in Bats, she was tying to defend the bats in AJs farm. I'm also seeing people say that she wasn't being forward with Dash in the newest episode "Trade Ya".She was simply being selfless. She cared  so much about Dash in getting that book, that she was willing to go to Manehattan for a couple months, just so Dash could have that book. Also, aside from her assertiveness, she's venturing into other things. Like becoming a singer for the Ponytones. I'm curious as to where that's going to lead, because she's got the voice of an angel. :squee:

Which characters have gotten worse? Pinkie and RD.

RD has had to re-learn her element of loyalty on more than one occasion, like in Trade Ya, she should've clued in. even if Flutters was being kind enough that she was willing to live in Manehattan for a couple months. Still, that's not being loyal, RD. Yet she was able to teach the Wonderbolts a lesson about friendship in Rainbow Falls. Though, she was pretty good in Testing 1 2 3, and Daring Don't.

Pinkie Pie....she's been at the bottom of my mane 6 list for awhile now. And I don't see her moving up from that position anytime soon. She's become more annoying, obnoxious and down right insensitive this season, most notably in Filli Vanilli and Trade Ya.  Pinkie Pride and Maud Pie were her only good episodes this season. Aside from that she isn't the crazy/random/funny pony she was in the previous seasons. She's turned into an annoying pony..
