I believe it works the same way, but in the "Human" world they stitch it on their clothes as a fashion statement.

 I think its a logo that people use earth is not equestria girls  they simply have logos when they finally figure out what makes them special it will give them a logo which will appear on clothing scootaaloo for example when scootaloo figures what makes her unique special all her clothes will appear  with a magic logo and can't be remove permanent forever .

I think maybe in Canterlot High, once they've come of age, the students get a custom-made symbol that represents the path they've chosen in life. Then they get someone to sew it on their clothes and backpacks (or in the case of Rarity, do it herself).

Yeah I still don't know how the EG characters had the same symbol. Why would they have the cutie mark symbols? 

A lot of questions need to be answered about EG...

It's kind of weird in the movies. They all have their own little symbol that appears on their clothes, backpacks, ect.

 

So how did they get this "symbol"? Was it already on their clothes when they bought them, or did they sew them on?

KInd of like to think it is kind of like your symbol of indiviuality or something. Hell ofr all we know it's a goverment thng the same as finger prints.
