Equestrian Empire wants you!

Troblems

(edited)

With the announcement of a new roleplay site we're encouraging those interested in the Equestrian Empire roleplay section (EQE) to join now, before the migration, to make the workload a bit more manageable.

But Troblems, what is EQE?
Equestrian Empire is a roleplay section that allows forum users like yourself to play cast characters. We still have a lot of popular characters to choose from, such as the Scootaloo, Applebloom, Shining Armor and Vinyl Scratch, and that's only a partial list. The full list can be seen here.

What if I want to use my OC?
You can do that too! All OCs are subject to an approval process by the staff, but once you're approved, you can interact with cast characters like your OC is apart of the show!

Approval process? What's that about?
EQE operate as closely to My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic show cannon as possible. Therefore, we don't want any characters to be too powerful, nor characters which would contend with what has been seen so far in MLP:FIM.

Well that sounds nifty! How do I sign up?
Here are the rules. I know it looks like a lot, but the rules are written for those who have never roleplayed so far, so most of them you should already have in the back of your mind. Included is also how to apply for OCs and cast characters.

The best part about this is that when we move over to the new website, you maintain your EQE characters, both cast and OCs. If you have any questions about it, you can either respond to this, or shoot me a message. I won't bite I'm pretty knowledgeable!

Forgive me if I sound ignorant, but this reads like only EQE is going to be welcome / allowed on the new RP site. If the site is meant to replace the RP section of the forums, does that mean that any none EQE characters / roleplays will be removed?

I'm just a little concerned because as much as I like the EQE in theory, I tend to avoid it because of the atmosphere that comes with it. I'd rather not be shoehorned into it.

You won't be. Every roleplay and character will migrate, both EQE and normal roleplays, as well as a new section for tabletop style.

My honest opinion is usually to start with a character you created, because who can play your character better than you? However, if you do want to start with a cast character, which you absolutely can, be sure to read the rules first.

I don't get the application process. Can you explain it a bit better please, if you can?

I'd be happy to, but technically there are three different processes, depending on if it's a cast character or an OC. Which one?  :)

@,

There are loads still open, including two of the Mane 6, Rarity and Pinkie Pie.

So to apply for a character, you would use this:

Name: (What’s your character’s name?

Age: (How old approximately is your character. Remember, we don’t know the lifespan of any creature in the show, so please use general ages. {Foal, filly/colt, Mare/Stallion, and appropriate age modifiers.})

Gender: (Is your character Male or Female)

Species: (What is your character?)

Appearance: (What does your character look like?)

Cutie Mark: (What is your character's cutie mark?{Pony/Zebra only})

Personality: (How does your character act? Are they intelligent, witty? What’s their overall attitude towards others?)

Likes: (What does your character like?)

Dislikes: (What doesn’t your character like?)

Backstory: (What happed to your character up to the point where you want to start your Equestrian Experience?)

Other: (Anything else that your character needs to roleplay)

Fill in the information for the character you are applying for, then send a private message to four people: Myself, @Ice Storm, and @MyLittlePonyTales. Depending on the tier of the character you would have to wait one or two weeks so that anyone else that is interested would have a chance to apply for that character. If you are the only person that applies, would win that character, and would keep it until you wish to give it up, or lost it due to inactivity, as only one person can have a character at a time. If someone else applies for that character, the found staff mentioned above would vote for whom they think has the best application.

That's all well and good but the one problem that I have for any of these sorts of forms are the backstory. I can't make an extremely intricate backstory for any of my characters. Usually I just say 'depends on RP.' I know that isn't the proper way to do it but I can't think of a good backstory for the life of me.

@,

We'll, usually the best place to start is with receiving a cutie mark, where the character grew up, hardships in their life, and education. Adding to that, their talents, passions, and relationships, that alone can make a decent backstory. You obviously RP, all you need is a bit of creativity. Keeping an RP fun and interesting should be the more difficult part. Creating the character should be a breeze compared to that.

Yeah well, I'm the opposite. Can't make a good backstory but can make an interesting roleplay. Anyway, I'll try to come up with one for Pinkie Pie. Shouldn't be that hard. Right?

The nice thing about Pinkie Pie is that a lot of her backstory is already completed for you. There are tons of wikis that have information about her before she relocated to Ponyville.

@,

& you can get a list of episodes that have flashbacks, if you have access to those episodes so you can see them, or see them again if you have seen them before.

@,

Also episodes centered on one character or a pair of characters should let you see more dimensions of a character then if they are part of an ensemble cast like most episodes that have a bunch of characters in them equally.

When I'm finished with the application for Pinkie Pie, do I send it to you and the other three members you mentioned, or put it on the unapproved characters queue?

I would join EQE but sadly, when I usually join those kind of roleplays. My OCs would usually get rejected, even if it's close to the spirit of FIM as I can make it.

@@Lady,

If you're interested in joining but unsure how to create a character within acceptable canon boundaries, I'd suggest reading through a few of the active threads and having a look at the OC's who are a part of them. Also, have a browse through the 'Unapproved Characters' list. You may get some ideas about what is and isn't considered acceptable by having a look at some of the reviews there.

Reading our OC Character Rules is also a great way to clear up any confusion about what we do and do not allow. They can be found here: http://mlpforums.com/topic/66334-original-character-rules/

I personally think it's a great exercise to write at least character within canon boundaries. It help you figure out ways in which to create characters who are interesting through the subtle nuances of their personality, rather than trying to make then as 'unique' as possible. (Not that there aren't hundreds of ways to create very unique canon-based OC's either.) Anything which helps to push your writing beyond your comfort zone can only be a good thing as a developing writer!
