I can't believe people at all anymore.

Today at work was just disgusting. So Columbus day coming soon, I have that day off. I made a comment.

" Oh we name a holiday after a psychopath who helped waged genocide on the Native American people and we all get a day off from it."

Co worker: " Oh hey I at least get the free day off."

This is the type of nonsense and downright immoral attitude I deal with at work. And I know it's like this for other people too.

I think its a nonsensical and downright immoral attitude to suggest that Columbus was a genocidal psychopath too.

Not going to argue here.... Please go read real books.

I'm pretty sure that's like passing Thanksgiving off as "The day where we began to turn against the Native Americans and nab their land after they helped us to survive".  Saying "at least I have a day off" is a perfectly reasonable thing to say, especially if you don't want to sound like a raving lunatic.

Also, it's really daft of you to say that his response was nonsensical and immoral, considering that you made yourself sound like an ass by ranting about a holiday's name.

Dude, I believe it was supposed to be humor. What are you, a normal person going about their everyday lives, going to say to 'Columbus is a genocidal psychopath'? If I was in that fellow's position, I would've said much the same thing as he did; he's not writing off everything that Columbus did (hey, even though he was a jerk, he did do some great things for this world!) but he/I am pretty thankful for the day off though.

Pretty much hit the bullseye for me.

To be fair we do praise a lot of people in history who have done horrable things and practically cover up there past and most people don't know what actually happened and believe false things and lies lets face it the world came from sexist racist genocidal monsters that did some historical things and are remebered as something there not.

It's unfair to judge people who lived in the 13th century with the standard of morality that is completely different than that which was the norm then. Back then, everyone was racist, many people held slaves, and war was normal. Everyone who lived then would have been thought of as a "psychopathic maniac" if we applied our modern standard of ethics onto them.

If anything I'm with him. I also don't think we should have columbus day, but more because he didn't really do anything. Now, Leif Erikson day, that I could get behind, seeing as he got to north America hundreds of years earlier.

But as far as Columbus being a psychopath goes this wasn't too far off from the norm at the time for anyone not a Catholic Spaniard. Remember this was the same time the inquisition was happening, for example. This doesn't make it right, just means he was pretty similar to other people in power at the time.

I probably would have said what your co-worker did too, that all happened centuries ago, it's not like we can change it now. Sure, the holiday is kinda weird but whatever, day off! Would you really need to protest a holiday no one actually cares about just to lose a day off? I don't think many people actually celebrate Columbus on Columbus day, they're just either glad to have a day off or forget it entirely like me.

15th century, or the 1400s 1492 specifically. 13th century would be the 1200s. Slavery as we know it didn't really start until the 1500s, either.

Ah, you're right. Thought it was the other way for a sec.
