Thoughts On Brotherhooves Social (Mind-Blowing) #WOW

Before I say anything else, that speech by Big Mac at the end was pretty darn good. Really tugged at the heart strings. The location, the way it was lit, and the overall direction created a really touching moment. However, when I say created, I more specifically mean manufactured, because this moment came out of nowhere and felt like it was just thrown in.

See, usually there's a moment in a story like this, where the Applebloom character says: "oh muh gosh, I've been such a jerk! I didn't fully appreciate the efforts of muh big brother!" But we never get that. Instead we literally go from her walking off and pouting directly to a scene where she's like "you know I'm not mad, right?" What!? That has got to be the most unnatural scene transition on the entire show.

See, the moment at the end is supposed to be just as much Applebloom's moment for redemption as it is Big Mac's. But this doesn't happen. AB just suddenly turns from an ungrateful, humorless, adolescent brat into a loving and appreciative sibling. I'm sorry, but you can't just have a character flip a 180 and expect me to take them seriously. Since there's never a true character transition here and no time to distance these juxtaposing attitudes from one another, the scene feels totally forced and isolated from the rest of the narrative. It feels more like a wish-fulfillment fantasy from Big Mac than a sincere moment - oh. Oh!!!

Wait a second: the romanticized lighting, the corny setting, the character turn, AB treating BM exactly how he hoped she would. Guys, guys I think I get this scene. This scene, it's not real. The scene is a fantasy playing in Big Mac's head. Think about it:

The episode opens up in a sort of despondent, wistful way. Big Mac shows hints of sadness, but the overall conveyance of this is rather minimal. Then feels kick into overdrive culminating with AB telling BM what a fuck up he is. His spirit utterly crushed, Big Mac goes off by himself and either dreams or imagines the final scene playing out - this is his way of coping with AB's rejection of him and more broadly the dissolution of their once strong sibling bond. The moment is corny and forced, because that's exactly what Big Mac needs at this moment. This ideal version of reality underscores the melancholic reality of the situation: the former sibling bond shared by Big Mac and AB is but a bleeding sun on the horizon. Woah.

Other thoughts:

(Once again) this episode is full of cheap dialogue that beats you over the head with how characters are feeling. At the beginning, AB goes on and on about how amazing AJ is right in front of Big Mac. Yeah, we get it, Big Mac feels unappreciated. Way to render the last few minutes of subtle emotions from him completely pointless.

I hate this. I hate how AB is drooling over AJ. I hate how manipulative and insulting this episode is written. I hate how all of the CMC's voice actors sound like teenagers, yet the show acts as though they're little kids. Sweetie Belle's voice is especially distracting. This is just a nitpick though, but I still hate it.

So in conclusion, this episode sucks, season 5 is in shambles, this show (which has refused to seriously evolve or progress) is beginning to rot, and I hate it. I hate it all!!!!

Canterlot Boutique: 7/10
Rarity Investigates: 5/10

Brotherhooves Social was shall I say, the worst episode in my life. This is an episode that I won't be watching again. The story for this episode was badly planned out and I did not watch halfway through the end of it, except I did watch the end bit and the scene made things a bit better. But it was the only good scene of the episode because Big Mac talked. And I agree that the rest of the characters were a bit OOCish too, except for Applejack, Granny Smith and Big Mac (kind of.)

No one to say anything about this?

Proof that MLP analysis is dead. Oh well, it was a fun run while it lasted :)

I can't believe how bad this episode was honestly. It actually felt like a show made for little girls. I've never felt that way before. We need that movie ASAP so we can get some quality MLP

I thought the episode was rather amusing, though I would like to ask what train of logic made Mac think he could pull it off at all... The fact that only the CMC know its him actually makes think think a great many ponies need to see an optician ASAP.

AB's little rant at the competitions end is understandable, she's till a kid, kids hate losing and they can throw a tantrum over it sometimes, the scene where they meet at the tree is several hours later and AB as clearly realized she hurt BM's feelings when all he was trying to do was help (in a cute but weird way as Sweetie Belle put it.).

Its a weird episode. No doubt about that. But don't try looking to deep into it. Evertone else who does that just ruins the show for themselves and then proceeds to whine about it. :P

This thread will be a rant thread about this episode? It will be interesting to read.

I like this episode. Fun and touching. The part that bothers me much is the old dude obsessed with Big Mac in drag. He looks like some creepy pervert old man ;)).
