The primary bus system of the State of Connecticut, CT Transit is one of the larger transit networks in New England with an operating budget over $100 Million.

Manufacturer and Powerplant: CT Transit procures from New Flyer, MCI, NovaBus and Gillig and nearly all of its fleet utilize diesel electric engines. Making extensive use of the Cummins ISB and ISX engines as well as the Detroit Diesel Series 40, 50 and 60 engines. CT Transit installed a unit from PureCell at their headquarters for powering the building. PureCell is a phosphoric acid fuel cell designed to lower the carbon footprint of buildings.

Fare Collection: There is no Contactless Card Payment System for use on CT Transit. Fares are paid with cash to purchase tickets which are valid for different periods of time, from 2 hours to 5 days to a month. CT Transit operates a true BRT system known as CT Fastrak. Because CT Fastrak is a BRT system, payment must be made before boarding the bus to make the boarding process as fast as possible.

Livery: CT Transit buses host many different liveries, standard livery hosts Blue and White, CT Fastrak buses are Green and Gray, and the free CT Transit "Dash" bus which provides a circulator/shuttle service in Downtown Hartford are painted bright orange.

Innovations: CT Fastrak is a BRT system which connects Union Station in Hartford and New Britain Station in New Britain, Connecticut. It is a 9.4 mile long stretch of abandoned railroad wich was converted into a dedicated busway. It took 15 years of planning and 3 years to build. 8 local routes and 4 express routes use this bus only road way and is served by 50 dedicated buses. The busway houses 10 stations and has become a very important part of the infrastructure in Connecticut. It is planned to be extended using HOV lanes to serve communities east of Hartford.
