Applebuck Season

See * for disclaimer   Applebuck Season (November 5th 2010, 22 minutes)   Summary: Big Mac is injured, and Applejack must take on the entire harvest by herself all while keeping her promises to help all her friends with their own interests.   That's a huge orchard. I mean *huge*. I've never seen an orchard run by one family that is that ridiculously huge. That size is agricorp level.   And the terrain is surprisingly hilly. It looks like the orchards in Western Washington just on the oth

The Ticket Master

See * for disclaimer   The Ticket Master (October 29th 2010, 22 minutes)   Summary: Twilight has two tickets to the Grand Galloping Gala, can she choose which of her friends to take? Spike may have trouble spelling words, but he can read complex words with the correct pronunciation just fine.   Not just letters, but the tickets get transported by Dragonfire.   These are tickets to the Grand Galloping Gala, and are rare enough that they don't seem to be regularly purchasable, so we're de

Friendship is Magic

Okay, yet again I'm going to remind everyone reading that my intent here is not a review or a critique. That's not what I do.   Instead this is watching the various episodes of My Little Pony with the intent of pulling out any details that can help inform the worldbuilding around the setting itself. That includes cultural events, festivals, architecture, clothing styles, references to other cultures, and whatnot. I've been doing this for all the prior generations, and I have finally hit the cu

Once Upon a My Little Pony Time

Once Upon a My Little Pony Time (G3.5 Webcast, 2009, 2x 10 minutes)   Here we go with another odd G3.5 experiment. We're dealing Flash animations produced by a different animation studio: Kunoichi.     Over Two Rainbows   Summary: Sweetie Belle arrives in Ponyville for the first time.   Early flash animation style, kinda odd but fascinating.   Flashback... Oh god. Newborn ponies.   Ahhhh! Hasbro actually *paid* for this? They didn't even bother animating the mouths.   This has t

Waiting for the Winter Wishes Festival

Waiting for the Winter Wishes Festival (G3.5 Direct-to-DVD Short, 2009, 4 minutes)   Summary: The girls talk about what they want for Winter Wishes.   This was a bonus episode on the Twinkle Wish DVD.   This is really presenting the Winter Wishes Festival as the pony equivalent of Christmas. Except 'A Very Minty Christmas' already showed G3 has the same Christmas as us. This is one of those strange disconnects from G3 to G3.5, despite everything else shouting that it's the same setting.

Twinkle Wish Adventure

Twinkle Wish Adventure (G3.5 Direct-to-DVD Special, 2009, 45 minutes)   Summary Cheerilee has to act as guardian to the magical Twinkle Wish star, but her little sister Scootaloo is feeling slighted and shenanigans ensue.   I can see how this intro evolves into the G4 intro.   All evergreen trees are like that. What makes this one so special? Or aren't they familiar with coniferous trees here?   Wait, Scootaloo is Cheerilee's sister in this version.   I'm not going to comment on the bu

Pinkie Pie's Ferris Wheel Adventure

Pinkie Pie's Ferris Wheel Adventure (G3.5 Direct-to-DVD Short packaged in the playset of that name, 2009, 5 minutes)   Summary: Pinkie Pie invites all her friends to come to the fair.   Interesting that the various characters are more individualized in this version, despite the art-style. They're a variety of sizes.   Starsong still has butterfly wings, so I guess she's officially a flutterpony within the G3.5 animations. Odd decision by the animators, given that her toys are still pegasi

Sweetie Belle's Gumball House Surprise

Here's where Generation 3.5 technically starts, as the animation style changes considerably. It still looks like the same setting, however. I'm so close to being done! Only five more to go.   Sweetie Belle's Gumball House Surprise (G3.5 Direct-to-DVD Short packaged in the playset of that name, 2009, 3 minutes)   Summary: Sweetie Belle sends her friends on a treasure hunt.   Wait, Starsong's wings are butterfly wings. She's not a pegasus in this one, she's shifted to being a flutterpony in

Rainbow Dash's Special Day

Rainbow Dash's Special Day (G3/C7 Direct-to-DVD Short packaged in the playset of that name, 2009, 11 minutes)   Summary: It's a day just for Rainbow Dash!   Rainbow Dash is this generation's Rarity, for sure.   Reference to Paris, France. Interesting.   Right, another clip show.   Yep. Nobody is more generous than Rainbow Dash. Definitely the Rarity equivalent.

Starsong and the Magic Dance Shoes

Starsong and the Magic Dance Shoes (G3/C7 Direct-to-DVD Short packaged in the playset of that name, 2008, 8 minutes)   Summary: Starsong and Pinkie Pie need to find their special shoes for their dance.   Full intro this time. I notice a reference to Sweetie Bell's magic with her horn glowing. This is new for this generation, as we haven't seen any unicorn actually perform *spells* yet in G3, except for Rarity using the magic wand back in the Crystal Princess episode.   The voice acting has

Meet the Ponies

Meet the Ponies (G3/C7 Webcasts, 2008, 7x 4 minutes)   This is something new, in that these are webcasts rather than direct-to-video stuff. This is one of those things that makes the division between G3 and G3.5 odd, because we're now dealing with Hasbro getting all experimental.     Pinkie Pie's Party Party   Summary: Pinkie Pie puts on a party!   This generation really gave up on trying to have buildings that were reasonable. Pinkie's 'house' is bizarre on the outside.   The inter

Pinkie Pie's Special Day

There's an odd thing going on at this point. Hasbro did another redesign of the ponies and stripped the toy line down to seven characters; Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Cheerilee, Scootaloo, Starsong, Toola-Roola, and Sweetie Bell. This is called by the toy collectors 'Core 7', but for some reason while the animations were also cut down to the core 7, the animation art style didn't change to match the toys until one year later. There was likely some communication issues between Hasbro and SD enterta

A Very Pony Place

A Very Pony Place (G3 Direct-to-DVD Collection, 2007, 45 minutes overall)   This is a collection of three shorts, each of a different length.     Come Back, Lily Lightly (20 minutes)   Summary: Lily Lightly doesn't want to be different from the other ponies, and being promoted to princess is the worst thing she can think of.   Time for the Unicorn Spectacular. The Rainbow Lights Party.   Right, so Lilly is now a Princess. And it's making her horn glow, and she's exceedingly nervous

The World's Biggest Tea Party

Yes, I'm including this. It's real, it happened. I doubt there will be much I can pull out for worldbuilding, but it's valid.   The World's Biggest Tea Party (G3 Live Action, 2006, 75 minutes)   Summary: The ponies put on the biggest party of all!   Giant sentient ladybugs stealing Spike's How-To book.   Why has he got a giant watch around his neck? That's awfully white rabbit.   It's not a watch, it's a tuning whistle it seems. Maybe it's an ocarina. Or maybe an ocarina *and* a pocket

Greetings from Unicornia

Bonus episode on the Crystal Princess DVD.   Greetings from Unicornia (G3 Direct-to-DVD Short, 2006, 8 minutes)   Summary: Rainbow Dash goes on tour in Unicornia.   Rainbows delivering mail.   Rainbow Dash is visiting the Unicorns.   Rarity's horn changes size from scene to scene.   Puzzlement has an odd accent compared to the other ponies.   Wait, the ponies are *riding* the rainbow.   That's a nice round. You don't hear them very often anymore.

Crystal Princess: The Runaway Rainbow

Crystal Princess: The Runaway Rainbow (G3 Direct-to-DVD Special, 2006, 48 minutes)   Summary: Rainbow Dash finds the origins of Rainbows is in jeapordy, while a young Unicorn just wants to play.   Animation seems to have cleaned up a bit this time.   Random turning pillars into maypoles.   Where's this? It's a new place... All the architecture looks identical to Ponyville again, but maybe a bit more Bavarian influence.   Unicorns! Whole new sets of ponies again with no connection to Po

Pinkie Pie and the Lady Bug Jamboree

This was a special add-on to the DVD version of the Princess Promenade.   Pinkie Pie and the Lady Bug Jamboree (G3 Direct-to-DVD Short, 2006, 8 minutes)   Summary: Pinkie Pie takes the lead and rescues the Magical Music Show.   Magical Music Show. Back to Pinkie Squinks?   I have no words.   Wait, they can see this? It isn't just in Pinkie's head?   That was quick costuming.   Well, it's technically better than the songs in the Promenade. But not by much.   Line dancing. I've nev

The Princess Promenade

The Princess Promenade (G3 Direct-to-VHS/DVD Special, 2006, 50 minutes)   Summary: Wysteria finds the most perfect flower under the castle, along with Spike the dragon. Finding the flower comes with privileges that set her above all her friends, and a price she may not want to pay.   The heck? Is this what happened to the Flutterponies? Breezies.   The framerate seems to be dropping every animation.   Right, Breezies are *shrunk* Flutterponies.   They're planting cut flowers? What?

A Very Minty Christmas

A Very Minty Christmas (G3 Direct-to-VHS/DVD Special, 2005, 45 minutes)   Summary Minty just wants everything to be perfect, but she lets her accident-prone nature gets the better of her, and she has to travel far to make up for the damage she caused.   Snow doesn't cover the entire ground at Christmas. This means that either there is an ocean nearby or if it's deep in the mainland it's relatively far south (relative to where I normally live, that is.)   Pegasis and earth ponies completely

Friends Are Never Far Away

Friends Are Never Far Away (G3 Direct-to-DVD Short packaged with the Hidden Treasure toy, 2005, 20 minutes)   Summary: Sky Wishes and Star Catcher want the ponies of Ponyville and Butterfly Island to all be friends, but convincing the Pegasi is a problem in and of itself.   Back to Butterfly Island. Okay, so we're not going to just ignore this. Good, good.   Pegasis ponies are very shy... heh.   Pegasis ponies love icecream. Who doesn't?   And again with the prehensile tails.   So mu

Dancing in the Clouds

Dancing in the Clouds (G3 Direct-to-VHS Short packaged with the Star Catcher toy, 2004, 20 minutes)   Summary: Twinkle Twirl needs to choreograph a special dance for the Friendship Ball, and Sky Wishes finds she has a secret friend that can help.   We're still in the same town, all earth ponies.   Roller-skating on cobblestone. Not recommended.   Hair stiff enough to actually *join* two ponies together. Fascinating.   New ponies not introduced in the prior episode, Twinkletwirl and Sky

A Charming Birthday

Generation Three didn't have a series as such. It's a collection of shorts and specials that were released direct to VHS, VCD, and DVD, usually packaged along with certain playsets and other toys. We have a completely new animation studio involved, Sabella Dern Entertainment or just SD, along with a new art style and setting.   The exact order of these is... unknown and possibly irrelevant, as many of them only have a year as a release date and I get the impression that there will be little to
