Your Most Favorite of My Pro-"Brony" Blogs

For the past two weeks, I've churned out four brony-centric blogs, all very long and rather deep. As a fellow brony who's been seeing some discriminatory brony-bashing as well as annoying dismissals as MLP:FIM being a show "for [little] girls," I feel like I have to show my love as being one in the method I do best: editorial or essay writing. Present pro-brony arguments and demonstrate why being a brony is great.   These are my four pro-brony writings that I've submitted (from earliest date t

Why Season 5 is my favorite of FIM

For a while, season two was my favorite season, followed by 1, 3, and 4 depending on my mood. (Four's a better season than three, but I found it less fun and enticing to watch beyond a couple of episodes: Pinkie Pride and Testing Testing.) Season five changed that: Cutie Map is the best season premiere. Slice of Life is a wonderful, seriously underrated, hilarious thank-you letter to the fanbase and an excellent 100th episode in its own right. Season featured the best episode for Applejack

Why Mighty No. 9's Trailer Stinks

Trigger warning: If you have photosensitive eyes or suffered any photosensitive seizure (symptoms), then the explosions of color and rapid movement from the video game trailer may bother you. Watch here at your own risk. Cross-posted from: Canterlot Times on Tumblr. A few days ago, Mighty No. 9 was released after several years of development hell. After so many people were excited, the release of the game felt more like a thud than a cheer. But that’s not what this is about. On Ma

Why is "The Big Mac Question" Season 9's newest best episode?

Because Season 9 was its last, FIM was likely going to go out and try to deliver the best episodes possible. Out of the gate, Dubuc and Haber co-wrote Sparkle's Seven, one of the best comedic, animated, and written episodes of the series. Taking ideas from the lead voice actors, they blended together a tremendous script that never let up, delivered an excellent allegory of how well-made predictability transcends poorly-made unpredictability, and used that allegory to create an excellent plot twi

Why I Do NOT Respect Opinions Unconditionally

Opinions are like fingerprints. Everyone has at least one, and they tend to be unique. They can be popular, unpopular, or controversial. That I don't care about.   But if there is one thing that royally gets my goat is this perception that he or she is entitled to his opinion, especially when this said person is saying something poorly informed or ignorant (i.e., homophobia) as a means of being free from persecution. To echo the quote from my signature:   Just because you express an opinion

What is a fandom?

Lately, one thing I've been reading, including on here, is how they're fans of a product, but "not in the fandom."   Let me explain what a fandom is.   To quote the basic definition of "fandom": That's it. By being a fan of something, you are in the fandom by default.   You're a fan of a sports team? You're in the fandom of the team you follow and league operating under it.   You're a fan of anime/manga and the creative process of it in general (a.k.a., an otaku)? You're in the otaku/a

We Bronies Dissect the Show, and It's Grrrreat!

One of the hearts of the brony community is the thinkers. The people who behave like scientists and analyze every facet about the show: the characters, atmosphere, episodes, and little references in each episode. Compared to other fandoms (the lone exceptions being possibly Sonic and Harry Potter), this fandom tends to review things from an extremely critical perspective, whether it's positive, neutral, or negative. Sometimes, we do this to a fault where we may occasionally think too much. But k

Using "autism" as an ableist insult is bigotry.

I posted this in my status and will repeat it here.   I LOATHE it when "autism/autistic" is tossed around as an ableist slur. "Autism" isn't something to laugh at or insult. There are thousands and thousands of people young and old with autism and other mental deficiencies. Many can cope, but others sometimes can't. For the latter, when they struggle, it can be HELL.   When you're using "autism" as a slur, you're resorting to bigotry. You're bullying people by using "autistic" as a pathetic

Two Little Things: A Small "Crusaders of the Lost Mark" Analysis

Sometimes, we as a people focus at just the big things and overlook the little. The bigger, more boisterous details we see in the show are the most upfront, but objectively good episodes like this, Slice of Life, Amending Fences, The Mane Attraction, and The Cutie Map are beyond the grand. Little pieces of detail are often overlooked. More often than not, they're the glue that holds the pieces together. Would the moral for Slice of Life make any sense if the animation and position of all the ch

Twilicorn Being Included in IDW's FIM Comics: A Response

Author's Note: This is in response to IDW Comics confirming to have the Twilicorn, starting with the pirate comic arc.   ———   Conceptually, I was fine with Twilight being an alicorn if given more than enough time for her to develop into one. However, her becoming an alicorn in season three was and will always be a factually bad idea for the reasons I outlined a while back here. In order for the Twilicorn to genuinely work, Magical Mystery Cure had to be written very well enough at the least

Twentieth Anniversary of a Belated Goodbye

Twenty years ago yesterday, famed Peanuts comic illustrator and writer Charles Schulz passed away from cancer at 77 years of age. The following day, his last strip (created well in advance) circulated the papers. Now twenty years since his last comic strip, Schulz’s lasting legacy remains firm, and Peanuts remains iconic for both young and old.

Top Moment of Digimon Adventure 02: Wormmon Returns

Digimon Adventure/02's American dubs infamously inserted jokes that aged so poorly that they soured before they aired on Fox Kids. But whenever it got serious, nine out of ten times did they not pull punches. When the partner of the former Digimon Emperor (Ken Ichijouji) disintegrated, it brought back horrifying memories of Ken watching his older brother getting fatally run over. Two episodes later, he got his own introspective, as he finally returned home after running away. Genesis of Evi

Top 3 favorite/least favorite FIM episodes right now (Seasons 1-3 only)

Like my Micro-Series and Season 4 (first half) ranking blogs, this is my list of my three most loved and most hated episodes for each of FIM's first three seasons. I'm not ranking it from an objective quality perspective, but more how they impact me personally.   Time to begin!   (In case you're wondering, Equestria Girls is NOT on this list because it's not episodic. I would if I wanted to, but that'd be cheating.)     Top 3 Season 1 Episodes! Party of One: Prior to Magic Duel an

Tiny rant: trigger warning exploitation

Trigger warnings are something society should mind to. Content warnings in film and TV, for example, are there because the content could trigger a reaction that can offend some.   My problem with how people in sites like Tumblr abuse trigger warnings. How? Painting triggers with an absolutist brush, exploiting the TW concept, and treating the system as be-all-end-all. Triggers are individual. What may trigger one person may not for others. Those guys aren’t spreading awareness. They’re exploit

Tiny rant: People using the word "emo" to reinforce stereotypes

Every time someone uses the word "emo," they appropriate it with someone self-harming, becoming sad, and possibly being angsty, among other things. That's not what "emo" is. Nobody has a damn clue what it truly means!   "Emo" is short for "emotional hardcore" — a style of rock music inspired by hardcore punk characterized by complex arrangement of instruments and expressive lyrics. "Emo" has nothing to do with depression, self-harm, angst, introversion, and the color black. The second you use

Thomas & Friends: Series 17 Review

A few months ago, I braved myself to watch some Series 15 episodes and grimaced at just about everything minus the CGI. (The rest, I merely read the summaries.) The characterizations, storylines, character development, and overall writing quality were objectively awful, and there was no way to defend them nor claim I was stating an opinion! Despite not being as observant with railway realism as some of the die-hards, it doesn’t change the FACT how important railway realism is, and Series 15 blew

Thomas & Friends Short Reviews: Series 18, Episodes 3 through 7

Due to time constraints, my reviews for Flatbeds of Fear, Disappearing Diesels, Signals Crossed, Toad's Adventure, and Duck in the Water will be much shorter.   If you want to read my other S18 reviews: Thomas the Quarry Engine (old, U.S.) Old Reliable Edward (U.K.) Not So Slow Coaches (U.K.) Duck and the Slip Coaches (U.K.) Flatbeds of Fear:   Strengths: The three strikes were used effectively. They were obvious, but developed the story nicely. The animation gave the audi

This…will take some getting used to.

As a long-time Thomas & Friends fan, there are a barrage of great characters, some of whom haven't been explored so much.   It looks like one classic character will get some screentime: Toby's coach, Henrietta.   So what will take some getting used to? Click the spoiler.         And have a look at a Series 18 clip, the episode being "Not So Slow Coaches." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7b4OFJxi34

This ox is scheduled for departure.

Have you read the posts by my friends PonyLaces and The Coffee Pony below?   Because this is the same for me. Poniverse's massive corruption and treatment of its people over the months disgusts me. There's no way I can support a place that treats people like property and feel comfortable coming. We are people, and we deserve to be treated with respect. Abuse deserves no tolerance. Once I back up whatever important stuff there is, I will depart, and I will not return.   The MLP Forums have be

This match is an early 2015 WWE Match of the Year candidate

Prior to TakeOver: Unstoppable, NXT's Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch have had a fierce rivalry. At the contract signing, they had a brawl that ended in Lynch twisting Banks's arm backwards, making her tap. If any of you are unfamiliar with the NXT Division, it competes with Ring of Honor as the tops of professional wrestling despite being a "developmental league." This is no exception for the women's division, whose athletic "divas" developed into holding matches as great as the men. At least two w
